I was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes about 20 years ago. I thought I was smart about it and knew all I needed to know. But I didn't. Earlier this year, for the first time, I read Dr. Richard Bernstein's book, "The Diabetes Solution" (excellent!!) and realized how much I actually hadn't known. Then, in following him online, I came across Jenny Ruhl's book, "Blood Sugar 101: What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes." I became so riveted in that book that I bought an e-Reader so that I could keep reading it without being stuck in front of my desktop computer! Jenny is a regular gal (not a doctor) with Type-2 diabetes and her situation is very similar to mine and lots of us. But what Jenny did that the rest of us did not was to perform the nitty-gritty research on all of the details about this disease - and then she took the time to explain everything so that it's amazingly understandable. Jenny writes in a super-organized, logical flow. So many times, I'd read something and think, "yeah but then what happens?"...and the next paragraph answered my question! So even though I learned a lot from Dr. Bernstein's books, Jenny's book takes things to a different level and I learned so much more about my own condition. Type-2 is not Type-1 (duhh), so we have different experiences and different requirements. Speaking and explaining from her own situation (and other people she's spoken to for years) in such an organized manner made it so easy to understand and relate to my own situation.So, you ask, why am I going on about the other book? Well, the moment I finished "Diabetes 101", I immediately bought 'Your Diabetes Questions Answered." And everything I said about the first book, applies to this book - and even more so. Once you really have a good understanding of what your disease really is and how it works, THIS book is AMAZING at explaining to you how to LIVE WITH IT. Again, she organizes the questions (chapters) in such a logical thought-flow. Nothing is left unanswered. Everything she thought about while she was dealing with these issues, she must have written down and took notes. And then she took what she knew and wrote this book and organized the book in such a way that there is an incredibly logical flow from one question and answer to the next.I know so much more about type-2 diabetes and how to deal with it in the best way (for me) now, after reading this book, than I did a WEEK ago. And that's simply amazing. I now follow her Facebook page, I've bookmarked and follow her web site (diabetes101.com), and at this moment, I'm purchasing her other books (about low-carb diets, since I've already been on one but I KNOW she will teach me more about how to do it better). I'm so impressed and I'm so appreciative of the incredible service that Jenny has done for all of us with Type-2 Diabetes.(Thank you, Jenny, if you ever read these reviews!!)
I have followed Jenny Ruhl's advice on Facebook for a year and on her webpages for decades. I have her prior books, which are excellent. This one is longer and covers a broader range of subjects.Jenny Ruhl is always sensible. She is always clear. And, IMHO, her advice is always right.This book is a treasure!
After reading Jenny Ruhl's previous book, Blood Sugar 101, and seeing dramatic results in A1C, 7.4 to 5.8 in just 6 months, by putting into practice the tips therein, I decided to purchase this one. I haven't been able to spend much time yet on this one and already I've found a lot of things I never learned from my doctor.If you are struggling to understand more about what diabetes is doing to you and why, this book is for you. Buy it! If you don't have Blood Sugar 101, buy that one too. You won't regret either purchase.
This is another excellent Jenny Ruhl book. As the title says, she answers all the questions you might have, from diagnosis to various treatment options. If you've been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes you owe it to yourself to read this book before your next doctor's appointment. It's more than likely you will know more about dosing and drug side effects than he does, once you've read this. It's especially important because many of the latest diabetes drugs are accidents waiting to happen. I've already seen ambulance chasing lawyers advertising on TV for people who suffered severe side effects from Invokana. Invokana is just the first of a half-dozen similar drugs that just haven't been around long enough to hurt people yet. This book will arm you for a real discussion of what treatment options are safest.
I have also purchased the 101 book version. Dependent on your situation and cuurnt knowledge, etc. People will have different options. But the general experiences and view points is what helped. Especially the parts when dealing interacting with medical bureaucracy, etc. And the references to different issues coming for it. Along with having certain plans in place, etc. If anything, the book helped refine my strategy for dealing with future issues. - There was a little bit of male bashing going on. ..Lol, but over all. She provided a service and expertise in the book worth buying. And recommending. Especially if wet behind the ears on the subject. Hence credit where credit is do. But her books with Dr. Bernstein Diabetics Solution & other material seem to complement themselves. And helped me go from A1c of 6.3 to 5.7 in 6 months (and hopefully lower as time goes on). Anyway, that's all for the moment.
Living with type 2 diabetes can be discouraging and confusing. My doctors have been so used to diabetics who won't change their diets at all that they have no advice for those of us outliers who are willing to work hard and smart to stay healthy. Jenny Ruhl is a breath of fresh air! Solidly scientific, easy to read, and with a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, she imparts balanced, practical advice. I come back to her work when I need encouragement and clarity in dealing with either a specific problem, or general burn out in dealing with this chronic illness.
I am a newly diagnosed diabetic, have purchased 5 of Jenny Ruhl's books, and thank my lucky stars I found her. She is probably the worlds best authority on how to handle the disease. With some plot points ripped straight out of the headlines and shaped deftly into a story that is uniquely hers, and vivid and offbeat characters that riff perfectly off each other, this was a book I had to read more than once.Lucky's got pride in a job well done, well hidden under the delight of "sticking it to the man" in a sanctioned fashion, but his in your face attitude and unrelenting banter are the prickles he uses to keep the world at a distance. Lucky is a giant pain in the ass in a banty-rooster body: he carves carrots into body parts if asked to make the salad and drinks the wine straight from the bottle. He twists everything, and keeps the heat on Bo, who isn't shy about handing the guff right back.What starts out as straightforward lust coupled with "give the newbie as much grief as possible"--Lucky needles Bo endlessly with jabs at his vegetarianism, his education, and need to get laid--morphs over time into feelings that Lucky can't identify clearly. His "give a damn" button has been broken for so long that he's having trouble recognizing the symptoms of caring, either for Bo, or for his work.The story is told completely from Lucky's POV, which seems uncommon in a romance of this length, but we have no trouble knowing Bo, who has layers of pain and complexity that come out bit by bit. Lucky is also a man of layers: his private sorrows are exposed a fragment at a time, each tidbit building on what we know already, and explaining perfectly why he hates his job and yet is so good at it, and why he keeps the world at bay. That he can let Bo in, a millimeter at a time, is only slightly because of time healing wounds, but even more that Bo can know him, understand him, and accept all the horrible parts without judging. They fit together so beautifully by the end of the book, without losing an iota of the smart-assery.The external plot revolves around drug diversion, where prescription pharmaceuticals are removed from the legitimate supply chain and sold to abusers. This is a real and huge problem: Ms. Winters touches on several ways it can be done, from out and out hijacking a truck to real doctors writing real prescriptions for imaginary ailments and enormous, `unsuitable for good medical practice' quantities. She keeps up a fast pace, keeping me highly interested, a bit horrified, and terrified that somehow Bo and Lucky's sting operation would go wrong.Lucky and Bo are one the side of the angels now, but Lucky's criminal past is what makes him so useful to the fictional agency he works for: the fox is guarding the henhouse because he knows all the ways in and out, but he's wearing a collar. His descent into crime unrolls slowly as flashbacks, contrasting with his current life, which he'd like to escape as completely as he'd like to escape his past. Bo's story is a little more conventional, his private demons encouraging him to take solace in the temptations that surround him at work. Neither is in the enforcement end of the pharmaceutical industry because they wanted or planned it: all they can do is make the most of it. (And each other, Lucky would add.)The secondary characters such as Walter and Dr. Ryerson are fully fleshed and vivid. The villain of the piece is three dimensional--one can see both the desperation that created the situation and the ruthlessness that exploits it. Even a character that never gets face time has a realness to him through Lucky's pranks, smarting off, and inner dialog.The ending brought lumps to my throat, and all I can say is I needed that epilog!Very highly recommended: this book works on a lot of levels, and, oh yeah, Bo and Lucky sizzle together. Two words: a**less chaps.
My Review:What a completely different and interesting set-up for this book. When the book begins, Lucky is in the process of stealing a truck-load of drugs and you (the reader) are wondering what the heck is going on. That opening segment is a pretty good chunk...like 3-4 chapters and I did think at one point in time that I didn't want to continue reading it. I'm so glad that I did because against all the evidence saying he's not at the beginning, Lucky is actually one of the good guys.Lucky is part of the SNB, a branch of the government that tracks down pharmaceutical bad guys. He's serving out a ten year sentence from when he actual did use to steal drugs for a living. He works for Walter and is counting down the days until his 8 years of indentured servitude is up, although he has truly come to love his job and his boss. Lucky hasn't had a very lucky life...in fact, his life has pretty much sucked and he uses sarcasm and a really dry humor and abrasive personality to keep people at bay. His one real relationship he had ended in tragedy and that full story broke my heart by the time it was all revealed. He doesn't trust others or himself to form relationships. He's also the con on this team of government agents. He feels like they despise him, so he puts up barriers to keep them at arms length. When he has to start training and working with Bo on a daily basis, it's harder to keep those barriers up.Bo has had his own legal and drug issues and is the new con on the team. The difference is Bo is actually a former marine and pharmacist. Lucky sees Bo as so much better than him because he went to college and did something with his life, even though they are pretty much in the same boat with the law. Lucky and Bo are two totally different types of guys. Lucky doesn't get attached to anyone. Bo makes connection with everyone. Bo is completely open and up-front with everyone. He's a caretaker...he cooks, is a bit OCD, and is a complete health nut.Then there's Walter...their boss. I love that Walter sees Lucky for who he really is. He's completely past the con part of Lucky, although Lucky doesn't truly realize that. That relationship, to me, added a lot to the book and helped to see Lucky for who he's truly grown to be over the 8 years. This is a book with complex characters who have serious flaws but it's full of little details to give you hope. Hope for their future and hope that things are going to straighten out for them, but there are also tons of little danger signs that show that things could go the other way for them. In that way, this series reminds me a lot of the Cut & Run series. It's very much the same type of characters walking a tightrope between right and wrong/good and bad.This is the first book to the start of a series about these two characters and I like the set-up it provided. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
The beginning of my love affair with Bo and Lucky and Eden Winters. Lucky is the ultimate black sheep, working hard to maintain his hard-nosed reputation with his boss and co-workers. Then he’s given Bo as a partner and meets his match. The sex is slow burn but steaming hot and Bo working his way into the cracks in Lucky’s walls are entertaining, witty and touching. The humor and banter is too-notch. Highly recommend!
I've read most of Eden Winters' books at this point. They are all good just because she's a really good writer with a very special way with words.But plot-wise and character-wise, I can't but think that this is just not her best. The MC, Lucky, is almost amazingly thick - deeply in love less than half way through the book, he doesn't quite figure it out until the epilogue. And Bo, the other MC is pretty screwed up, too, even though he's the tall, hot one.According to the descriptions, this couple is strictly Mutt-And-Jeff, one only 5' 6", the other over 6' and, of course, the tall one is the gorgeous one despite the fact that Lucky thinks that Bo's hair is actually glued down to his head when he first meets him.And the action (as in action-adventure, not sex) lasts only about one page at the end of the book, which makes this a very, very long buildup to a HEA.But there is something to be said about a tall man in assless chaps and apron at the stove cooking vegetarian dinner.I'd suggest you try some of her other books before this one, as your much more likely to want to read more.

Arrived quickly and in perfect condition. It is perfect as a supplemental material to my Microbiology class that I am currently enrolled in. Highly recommend this book to anyone who needs Micro broken down.
This book would be better for bare basic micro. I’m in a paramedical microbiology course and honestly it did nothing to help. It didn’t break down bacterial shapes enough or viruses enough either. So if you’re in a lower division course this is perfect, other wise search for EZ microbiology in amazon books. The book is in really good shape and it got here super fast so I’m rating my stars on that otherwise it would be 2 stars at most otherwise

I played fro. Grade school until college. Took a 10 year break from it and came back to playing. It is a great book as a refresher and a great method for new students. I am now using it to teach my son and he's doing great. Get the one with the audio CD... it really helps to play along and hear an example. The CD does both for each line in the book. My son even. Moment ed on it with the CD.... loves it now....
This was the required text for my son's 6th grade band class. So far so good.
Looks to be a good book to learn the Trombone. It was a required book by the teacher.
Had to buy for my granddaughter since this is what her band uses. A decent beginning band book. Still have to supplement this with a method book.
Book is great. My student is still using it for the trombone.

Fun and well-organized, this e-book gives clear direction for holistic action steps to takes to balance mood and cognitive function. I liked that the author included recipes (like homemade coconut milk, bulletproof coffee, nerve-tonic mushroom broth, and power smoothies). And for every super-food or herb listed, the author makes it really easy to understand exactly what the health benefits are. He also has well-documented links to all the points that he makes, if you want to find out more (not that you really need to, since for a small book there's A LOT of info). Some of the points he makes I already knew about, but he included others I haven't thought much about--like how blue-spectrum lighting at night interferes with melatonin production, or the specific benefits of HIIT.Basically, this little e-book has so many action steps that you can take that I feel like I'll refer back to it many times. You can choose which steps **you** feel will be most balancing, because the author doesn't go all preachy or guilt-trippy the way many health writers do. It's written with a practical, compassionate voice. Good stuff!
'Natural Brain Health Protocol' is a quick and worthwhile read in which the info is condensed, so it took me about 2 hours to finish. I first got intrigued because I met the author and was taken by how healthy and vibrant he seemed, and after talking to him a while wanted to learn a bit more of his health program. Asides from diet, the book touches on subjects such as the benefits of sunlight, forest bathing, consuming clay, altering brainwaves, etc. Some of his ideas might be considered unconventional, although intriguing, and I feel I got some very good ideas that I will put to use.
Really great informative book
For each recommended action the author recommends he includes references and links to a pair of research papers that support his proposition. I wouldn't use this as a bible for brain health and improved cognitive ability, since research is also available that discounts the supposed benefits for both coconut oil and ghee.This nutritional plan may work for the author, but personally I find the recommendations to be unpractical and more based on the author's personal preferences than scientific study. A third of the book covers herbal nootropics that are not readily available. Other recommendations are likely too exotic and eccentric for the typical reader.However, if you're looking for a truly alternative lifestyle and eating plan, this book may be for you. But it is truly unconventional and different! On the other hand, no harm in trying some of these ideas.
I have been experimenting with the Paleo diet for preventing migraines. So I got this this little ebook from Tristan's description without even thinking about it. This ebook is clear, concise and easy to read. I can't wait to try some of the recipes. And the section on sleep is priceless for me. I'll be coming back to it again and again to experiment and play with some of the options in this ebook.
The author is scary smart. The writing is clear and concise. Full of amazing healthy food suggestions, recipes, and supporting research.After initial reading, it will be a regular reference to continue learning and motivating towards improving quality of life.
