Our granddaughter's Language Arts teacher gave the class a reading assignment. This book was on the list and while someone else picked this one, our girl was very disappointed. I felt it was worth buying to continue her education and love of reading. It did not disappoint us. It made a horrific time in history come alive for her and opened doors to communicate and ask questions. I highly recommend this book. Very well written.

This book should be mandatory reading for everyone! Although this was adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell for young readers, I was quickly entranced and read it in a day. I think it also has a lesson we all need to be refreshed on, the horrific atrocities we do to those who are different from us. It will make you sad, cry, sad, and sick over the senseless cruelty, but you will feel hope when you read of the courage of Irena and her friends. I highly recommend this well written and thought provoking book for all ages!

When a book captures my interest I usually finish it in short order. Not so with this Young Readers Edition of Irena’s Children. I had to read this one in segments, allowing myself breaks to breathe fresh air and seek sunshine after being immersed in the darkness that shrouded Warsaw, Poland during World War II. I’ve read other books about the Nazi’s horrendous ethnic cleansing campaign, but I think like many readers I chose to picture the victims as adults, suppressing the fact that the children of those adults faced the same fate. That isn’t possible with Irena’s Children. Never gratuitous in its depictions, it nevertheless doesn’t shy from portraying the realities of what was at stake for those seen as undesirable, as less than human. Nor does it soften the extreme danger Irena and everyone in her network faced by choosing to risk their lives to save the lives of others. Humanity snatching victory from inhumanity.So who should read this Young Reader’s version? Any and all adults, especially those parents and teachers whose children will be reading it. And as for those children reading it, I think it best suited to readers 12+ due to the intense nature of the subject matter. It’s definitely a book that should be discussed and the historical background explored for a fuller understanding of its topic.Note: I received a copy of this book from the author, Mary Cronk Farrell. Mary is also a friend of mine, but that in no way influenced my review. Mary always has and always will tackle hard topics with skill and finesse.

This true account of Irena Sendler and her friends in Poland warmed my heart and I was astounded by their bravery! Irena and her friends helped save Jewish families during World War II by placing themselves in grave danger, hiding and sneaking children to safety. This is a magnificent story of heroism that affected thousands of Jewish children and has since affected generations of families. This book needs to be read to get the full extent of what true courage Irena Sendler embodies and the bravery it took to save innocent children during the Holocaust! 4 stars.

A woman who risked everything to save Jewish children she didn’t even know from the brutality of the Nazi’s in Poland during WWII. The things she saw happening around her frightened her, but she also became angry. She joined others in secret meetings that grew into a network of brave people that helped save hundreds of infants and children from certain death.The brutalities and atrocities of the Nazi invasion of Poland have been widely documented. This book takes the reader into the burning buildings, the disease infested ghettos and in the brutal prisons of Poland. Irena and her group of brave, everyday heroes suffered greatly for their acts. Some lost their lives, some were arrested and tortured and others lost everything they had, but all of them worked tirelessly to save just one more child every moment of every day.Through it all, Irena encouraged, helped and understood when others didn’t have the energy to go on. She kept lists of the children so that one day they could possibly be reunited with their families. If that wasn’t possible at least they would know their names and Jewish heritage and the love and sacrifice of the families that hid them and raised them as their own.Irena lived through all of the danger, uncertainty and brutality she suffered to be reunited with some of “her children” in the 1980’s. She died peacefully in 2008 at the age of 98. Countless survived because of Irena and the network of others devoted to Irena’s children no matter what the cost.This book was an amazing story of triumph over one of the worst things that happened in world history. It is told in story form with information from archives, historical sources, Tilar Mazzeo’s personal knowledge, personal interviews, historical photos (many included), maps, books and Mazzeo’s original book.I absolutely enjoyed this book from the standpoint of history, WWII and the courage of people bringing hope to the youngest members of a nation in situations that seemed hopeless. It is not easy to read about the torture, pain and death of the group of innocent people. But not reading about it doesn’t make it go away. It is a painful part of history that needs never to be forgotten.This is the young reader edition, based upon Mazzeo’s original book, and has been adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell. There is no way to “tone down” the events discussed in the book. The language may be an easier form for young readers, but it is still about a time a group of people were singled out and methodically murdered, maimed and tortured just because they were Jewish. It was a scary and difficult time for adults and children alike.If they are interested in history, I would highly recommend Irena’s Children. They may have questions that would require further discussion. Adults should read this also. While it is the story of undeniable horrors, it is the story of hope and the triumph of human spirit that encourages all of us to help one another and to make the world a better place no matter who we are or where we live. The story is, of course, inspiring, frightening, and heart-rending all in one book. One of my 7th grade students recommended it to me and I am glad she did. My only quibble is poor editing. Multiple errors hurt the Scholastic edition of the book. "Women" and "woman" are misused a couple of times. The word "Nazis" seems randomly punctuated with an apostrophe with no rhyme or reason. These errors detract from the impact of the book for a reader like myself, though they can never detract from Irena Sendler's courage and strength.

The quick and easy to read stories make you feel like you are sitting down to dinner and having an uproariously good time with one of your oldest and funniest friends. While the book is a very fast read, savor the individual stories and pull them out for times when you need a quick pick me up. While I did not necessarily agree with all of the things they dubbed "The Worst Ideas Ever," I did always have a smile on my face while reading this book. So better yet, save the book for times when you are on public transportation, your wide smile and hearty laugh will assure you open berth, as you will assuredly be marked as that "crazy happy person on the train."

I really enjoyed this book. It was informational and funny. The only complaint I have is the more than occasional spelling and grammar error.

There is so much in this book that I had thought about at the time but never expressed. The authors capture what we are all thinking.

From New Coke to the Yugo, "Battlefield Earth" to Prohibition, modern history is full of laughably bizarre ideas that have made for some epic fails. In fact, somewhere in this world there is actually a little boy named "Facebook". Perhaps he can befriend some of those crazily-named celebrity babies (Moses Martin, anyone?). In this collection of anecdotal insanity, Daniel Kline covers laughable attempts in sports, politics, media, and so much more. Hey Paul Blart, remember the Segway? Have you ever deep-fried a turkey and blown up your house? How sexy is sticky, gooey pubic hair-infused edible underwear? Kline reminds us of failures past with wit, but the editing in this collection is worth a 'worst' nomination of its own.

Quick and easy read. First book I have finished cover to cover in a long time. Very entertaining and a lot of, "oh yeah, forgot about that" moments.

I love this book, and books like this..this is the best one yet. Some books like these do not have any pictures, so in case you dont remember what they were talking about, this one has full color pics of almost EVERYTHING!! The story to some of these were great (like the Taco Bell dog, which I didnt know was a faliure until I read this). The author seems to know what he is talking about and has some great items in here. This is something I can read, leave out and pick up and read again. I cant recomend this book enough...!!! Oh, and BTW, did I mention IT HAS PICTURES?? FULL COLOR PICTURES???!!!!!!!

I wish I didn't waste my time and money on this piece of crap. You use a few pages (or less) to describe each subject (which has many facets), and without any research into the background, you call it worst ideas ever. Either you are intellectually handicapped or you expect your readers to be so. It's a shame that I couldn't give it less than one star.

He drags Anna into his financial woes and her falling pregnant doesn’t help matters until Scott comes up with a plan that she agrees to and once done, regrets. Her decision-making skills leave much to be desired from the beginning of the story and it was this that irritated me. As a young student I found her gullibility annoying but 14 years later as a happily married woman with two children who is the sole breadwinner as the head of a primary school, I shook my head repeatedly at her downright idiotic actions. But if truth be told, people don’t change. Her penchant for poker, the thrill of winning and bluffing has been with her from the get-go.The person causing all the current upsets in her life by threatening to expose her for the fraud that she is, was, in my opinion, obvious early on. I failed to sympathise with her and was perplexed as to why she’d return to Manchester where much of what she was covering up took place and having a FaceBook account was ridiculous.The lesson of this book is that you cannot outrun your past. When you tell a lie or keep a secret, it will become necessary to tell another lie and cover up more and more until you lose control.If someone asks you for honesty and you agree, but fail to deliver, do not be surprised to be called out and have your life crash down around you.A smaller part of the book tells the story of Tom Douglas but this did not interest me nor add to the main story.Four stars.

I am a huge fan of Rachel Abbott’s books and this book certainly didn’t disappoint. Meet Anna, she is a normal, slightly boring wife mother and head teacher. Her marriage is solid and built on a foundation of trust and honesty, or is it?. Like most of us Anna made some unwise decisions in college. Most of us are fortunate enough to move on and forget them but Anna is being haunted by hers 15 years later. I love books that explore how ordinary people react in extraordinary situations and Anna is so relatable it made The Shape of Lies even more thrilling and intriguing. I literally couldn’t put this book down, each chapter unveiled a new layer in the mystery and I simply had to know all of the answers.

I normally love this author's work, but the storyline was just over-the-top unbelievable. The main character has to be the most dim-witted woman on the planet to get caught up in the lies and extortion she did in her youth. One trip to the police would have ended the whole thing, but instead, we are lead to believe she has to flee to another country to sell her baby (for an amount that was no where even close to what a baby would go for on the black market) to pay off the debt her boyfriend built up gambling? Moreover, the whole loan shark story, of a $300 per month interest rate that in only 12 years (including interest on the interest) leaves her BILLIONS in debt was beyond ludicrous. The author apparently lacks basic math skills. I've never wished harm on the main character, but all this woman did was whine about her secrets while people around her are getting hurt when a tip to law enforcement could have brought the whole thing to an end as dozens of other victims were out there.

I am an avid reader and this book was so exciting and so thrilling that I don't think I'll be able to find another book to match it or even come close . Rachel Abbott is an excellent writer . This book had me on the edge of my seat and I had to take deep breaths in order to continue to read it it was just that fantastic ! I give it 10 stars and hope everyone buys it because it is the best book she's ever written not to mention the best book again that I have read

This book was outstanding! My favorite of Rachel Abbott's books. I started it today and finished it at 4am. It was that good. The characters were believable and the suspense kept me going until I finished. Lots of twists and turns and a kick a-- ending. Best read of 2019 so far!

I normally love Rachel Abbott's books, but this story was all over the place, there were too many side stories going on and it wasn't believable in my opinion.I was disappointed.

As closely as I follow the Tom Douglas series I could not connect with this story. The plot was discombobulated and simply beyond belief. And where did Nebraska come from? A female reader might find this book more identifiable than her male counterpart. I'll be waiting patiently for Tom Douglas' next case.

I pre-order everything from Rachel Abbott because she never lets me down. This is the latest in her DI Tom Douglas series, and it's a ton of fun. An original, twisty mystery with some very interesting quirks. Love this writer, I've read all her books and am impatient for the next one. Thank you Rachel!
