We always drive through various countries in Europe with Michelin maps. Great detail easy to follow green (picturesque) roads, also Autoroutes and other large highways.
Hard to find good maps these days. We still find them useful, even with Goggle and GPS. This map is large scale, and very informative. There is a city guide, just in case your Spanish geography is weak. Great price. Well shipped. Quick service.

Part epic fantasy, part satirical deconstruction of Lord of the Rings, and part black comedy, the trilogy introduced us to Abercrombie’s snarky, endearing, and at times utterly horrific menagerie of characters. It will make you laugh, it will make you blanch, and in the end it will leave you with complete emotional exhaustion.The term “grimdark†is a tricky phrase. It means different things to different people. Abercrombie writes a dark world, true, but the moments of genuine beauty and the goodness that human beings are capable of shine through that much brighter for all the muck and grit that covers things. The Circle of the World is a place where being a good man or woman is very hard. But people still try. Sometimes they fair, sometimes they succeed, but the struggle is what makes you root for them. Words like “good†and “evil†often have no place as value judgments in Abercrombie’s world. To paraphrase Logen Ninefingers, sometimes it’s just a matter of where you’re standing.In addition to the First Law trilogy, Abercrombie wrote three stand-alone novels set in the same world, bringing his unique Tolkien-meets-Tarantino flavor to the revenge story, war story, and frontier western genres. Sharp Ends is a collection of short stories that’s pans across his entire First Law timeline, the first coming before the beginning of The Blade Itself, and the last taking place after the end of Red Country. We see some old familiar faces, and are introduced to some new ones as well. These stories have the same combination of comedy, tragedy, violence, and brutality that makes Abercrombie’s other work so brilliant. The cast of characters is diverse, and real in such a profound way that I honestly don’t know how he manages to keep pumping them out.Sharp Ends is the best fantasy collection that I’ve read since George R.R. Martin’s cross-genre anthology, Rogues (which also featured Abercrombie’s Nebula Award winning story, Tough Times All Over). In addition to Tough Times All Over I also have to praise A Beautiful Bastard, Made a Monster, and Some Desperado, though all of these stories are worth the price, and all of them have their own sharp ends…
I enjoyed the majority of the stories in this book. Some of them were better than others, and some of them I recognized from other, previous publications, like "Tough Times All Over," and "Some Desperado."Some of the stories were better than others, which is always the case with anthologies. I'd been excited to read the first story, about Salem Rews and Sand dan Glokta several years before The Blade Itself was set. It turned out to be more of a snapshot than much of a story, though. It was clear that it was about to lead into the events that turned Glokta into the man he would become, but it wasn't about that. It was just a look at what kind of person Glokta was before. Interesting, but I wanted more.I enjoyed the introduction of Whirrun of Bligh, before anyone knew much about him. He's a fun character, and the end of that story was one of those really perfect endings.The story of Nicomo Cosca through rose colored glasses was amusing at first, but ultimately it didn't work for me. He was one of my favorite characters to read, throughout the series, one of the more complicated, interesting characters. Reading such a delusional, deceptive view of him was funny, at first, but then it quickly just became tiresome and I found myself bored.My favorite stories were the ones about Shev and Javre. I felt he put most of his character development effort in there. There was humor and there was introspection, and everything about them was really enjoyable. Their friendship was the best thing about the book. My one complaint is the placement in the timeline of "Tough Times All Over," which didn't make a lot of sense to me. I felt that the events in "Three's a Crowd" would've worked much better if they'd come after "Tough Times All Over," chronologically. It almost looks like a mistake, although where Abercrombie is concerned I assume that what he does is usually intentional, so maybe he meant to show the lack of character development as a comment on their personal flaws. I'm not sure how I feel about it.I would absolutely recommend this book to any fan of the First Law setting. I would not suggest it as an introduction to his work, though. Read some of the First Law books first, and then come to this if you enjoy that.
Many of the stories in this book flesh out events from the First Law trilogy and stand-alone novels. Some appear to be "director's cut" additions. And others are stories that fill in the back story (the early days of Bethod and Nine Fingers, for example). The stories are violent, dark, and filled with laugh out loud bits. If you love the world of the First Law, this will add to your enjoyment. If you are a newcomer or are finding your way here from the Shattered Sea series, I'd recommend you start with the First Law trilogy and the stand-alone novels first.For me, though, it was the Shev and Javre stories that are worth the price of admission. Joe Abercrombie has stated that Shev and Javre are his take on Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, but they are not mere pastiche. They are wonderful characters. The stories are funny and fast-paced and it really is time for a Shev and Javre trilogy.

This book is the same as "The Lost Art of Drawing the Line". So, I have reviewed both. And, have copied this review in the book under that book title. Yes, we need common good. And, we need judgment restored. But, for that to happen, we must have a moral people. We can only have the concept of common good, if we have a moral people. As morality breaks down, so does the concept of the common good. And, when there is an immoral people in control, the common good can be turned into a means to an end.The book is well written. But, the conclusions wrong in certain cases, especially in granting more authority to judges. Judges already have absolute immunity for complete incompetency, which, in most cases, is what takes place in courtrooms across America, daily. Further, judges wield nearly absolute authority in the courtroom. Absolute immunity + Absolute authority = Complete incompetency + Judicial Bribery (Subtle and Gross) Yes, lawsuits are an issue. Yes, attorneys tax America by seedy legal practices. And, attorneys are allowed to practice fraud by a rogue judiciary. The author believes in the moral authority of judges, and that greater judicial discretion is needed to dismiss "frivolous" cases. From my perspective, granting judges more authority would threaten America's underlying stability even further. No, we must have accountability for decisions made. And, we must hold lawyers and judges accountable for telling the truth. Lying is a common practice. Perjury profitable. In Secret Corruption, which exposes the massive scale of the damage done by the legal system to our nation. But, does not place more faith in the people running the system. Rather, I believe, We the People, must have a voice in governing the system, and holding those in it accountable for their actions. Yes, on author's issues of discerning right and wrong. No, on author's solution: greater judicial authority and discretion.This book is well written. Definitely 4 stars. I like the title "The Collapse of the Common Good" more than "The Lost Art of Drawing the Line".
Every politician, every lawyer, every judge, and especially every citizen in America should read this book. It explains clearly and concisely how bad laws and frivolous lawsuits are undermining our country. Everything has to have warning labels, everything has to be dumbed down, anything remotely dangerous (such as the teeter-totter or playground slide) has to be eliminated, and teachers aren't allowed to punish bad kids for fear of being sued. Government unions make it impossible to fire incompetent workers, and anti-discrimination laws cause the very discrimination that they are supposed to prevent. After reading this book, you will understand better why government, corporations, and society are not working as good as they should. How can they, with the guillotine of potential lawsuits hanging over our heads?
I think this book should be required reading for the College students. In today "politically correct" culture this one is a breath of fresh air.I would strongly suggest to read his other books like "Death of Common sense"
Howard's previous effort, "Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America," was spot-on. This one, unfortunately, takes the misguided and anti-liberty view that our courts are supposed to make law, rather than decide its legality.Howard correctly excoriates the judicial approach which examines laws in anal-rententive detail, which finds "hidden meaning" where there plainly is none. He correctly prefers the precepts of common law over the intrusive restrictions of legislation. He believes judges should have the power to simply throw out obviously ridiculous cases. Yet, Howard goes too far, and has nothing but praise for the idea that judges should be able to use their "superior abilities" to make life decisions for us poor, simple regular folks.He assumes that judges are the wisest members of society, and loves the idea that they are often appointed for life, which supposedly leaves them free to consider long term views. He wholly embraces the idea that judges should make law for the benefit of society, that they should decide social issues for our own good. (A typical example found in the book is his adulation of the anti-property rights Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, an elitist and moral relativist. In a case Howard highlights, Holmes ruled that a statute which restricted the workday of bakery employees "for their own safety" to ten hours was legal. Fortunately, the rest of the court voted against him, which Howard laments. Of course, there is nothing in the Constitution allowing the government to restrict workers' hours, nothing which allows any government interference in business practices; any attempt to do so is a monstrous "stretching" of the document and an assault on liberty. Yet Holmes is lauded by Howard for his efforts at social intervention.)Essentially, Howard wants judges to run the country, because they are just so darn smart.

I used the book as a reference for MCSE. But, now that I'm really going through and reading it more thoroughly I'm surprised that it was rated 5 stars at the time I bought and still is.Although there is a lot of useful information in it one strike against it is that it's written in a manner that is not easy to read. I could include one of many example paragraphs that would just blur your eyes and make your head spin, even after reading it multiple times. But, I'm not going to take the time or space in this review.Also there are too many instances in which the authors don't finish the point. For instance (just one of many examples) when they discuss configuring LM compatibility. They provide a nice list of possible settings, tell you that you set these in Group Policy and then don't finish by telling you where or how you make these settings in Group Policy. So you're left having to go to another source to finish the answer. Once you've done that a few times you quick reading this book and use the other source instead. I've trained on software myself for many years and I consider that laziness, on the authors part.I won't deny that there's valuable information in the book. That's why I opted for 3 stars. But, there's also enough shortcomings that it's not a 4 and certainly not a 5 star book.

I ordered my book on 8/5 and it's 8/22 today. Still no book and I am close to 10 chapters behind in my accelerated learning class. How convenient that they deleted my first review to make sure they don't look bad to the public. I ordered my book on the 5th and never got the book as of today. This company has made 0 attempt to make up for my inconvenience. Thanks for nothing.

The Windows Security Resource Kit is a wonderful wealth of information on securing Windows networks and operating systems. It is useful for anyone above the beginner level. It concentrates on using features of primarily Windows 2000 and XP to maximize security for various levels of needs. It is not about building a bastion host or configuring firewalls.It is not a "cookbook" like too many training manuals are these days and is not full of fluff - it covers a lot of territory in it's 680 pages and is not geared for technogeeks, but is clearly written and understandable to the average Joe and Jane [except page 349]. The first two chapters put you in the security "mindset" - Key Principles of Security [including the Ten Immutable Laws of Security] and Understanding Your Enemy. I think that is very important, because security needs to be approached from an attitude about what you are up against and how only one vulnerability can sink your boat.The next twenty three chapters are logically divided into security topics that can later be accessed easily as needed for reference purposes. Each chapter ends with best pratices recap and references to other books or Knowledge Base articles.I thought the "meat" of the book was thorough, interesting, and accurate. Finally I have one place to go for an explaination of what ALL the user rights, security options, and services are. There is an excellent chapter on securing tcp/ip with specific recommendations on registry modifications to defend against a denial of service attack and even a .vbs script on the cdrom to implement them all. An equally excellent chapter on auditing including comprehensive tables explaining Event Ids and Event ID 681 failure codes. I finally know what the difference is between auditing account log on and log on events. Chapter 10 goes into great detail about ALL of the various settings in the Web Content Zones for Internet Explorer and how to configure them for your needs. Cookie/Privacy settings are also explained in detail. Chapter 7 includes specific recommendations on ntfs security settings for every folder in a new installation and a security template to implement them. I was impressed with Chapter 21 in that it shows you how to secure an IIS 5.0 server without having to be an IIS expert. Chapters 22 and 23 nicely explain patch management, Windows Update, using Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer tool, and using SUS for patch management on a large scale basis. The chapter on remote access and vpn explains the differences in pptp and l2tp and when to use each. Other chapters cover securing Terminal Services, authentication - various settings for Lan Manager authentication level, managing security templates/Security Configuration and Analysis tool, wireless networking/WEP, EFS [ten pages of crucial info], ipsec, Certificate Services, Group Policy, Active Directory [I now know how to use dsacls to reset object permissions to default], securing laptops [very informative], permissions, account/password policies, and managing users. Chapter 24 covers using security assessment tools including how to port scan and a extensive chart of common Windows ports and what applications use them.Part VI of the book breaks away from Windows specific configurations and is called Planning and Performing Security Assessments and Incident Responses. It discusses vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, and security audits. This part is also extremely informative to those of us who are not trained in what to do after an incident - what to do when an intrusion is detected, who to inform , and most importantly how to preserve data in the event of criminal prosecution or to reconstruct the attack. The last chapter goes into privacy issues that one needs to know as how far can one go in gathering information from a legal standpoint.Windows Security Resource kit is a very valuable resource in my opinion to anyone interested in securing a Windows computer or network. The writing style is very understandable and you do not have to read the whole book for it to make sense if only certain topics are of interest. It does not however go into too much detail on importance of virus/trojan protection or perimiter/firewall security but there are whole other books written on those topics. The included cdrom has many tools from the Resource Kit and the book itself. I also highly recommend it to anyone studying for their MCSE and consider it a "must have" for anyone planning to take any of the MCSE security exams or pursue the MCSE Security certification. Kudos to Microsoft Press for this one.

The biggest irony of this book is that the author explains his explanations to explained what he explained! And yet he says transparency is a key as a facilitator. I grew steadily more frustrated with this book, as it really lacks substance, or specific examples for different coaches, facilitators, team leaders. I just wished I was forewarned better on this book. 360+ pages, should have given away, that its not focused, rambles on, and over does it, sifting through so much to find one or two nuggests.

Like most people, I’ve sat through dozens of group presentations. Some were quite rewarding, some fairly painful. And although I do not consider myself a facilitator, on occasion, I’ve been required to lead group meetings. When I saw The Skilled Facilitator, I was interested in learning what makes a skilled facilitator. I was also a bit curious about how I could improve my own presentations and more than a bit interested in learning how my approach to group meetings may be deficient.In The Skilled Facilitator, Roger Schwarz, provides a comprehensive approach which will benefit any person tasked with leading a group. I believe that even the professional facilitator will gain new insights from Mr. Schwarz’s approach.The bedrock to becoming a skilled facilitator is mindset. Mr. Schwarz explains there are two basic mindsets – the Unilateral Control Mindset – which is our default mindset – and the Mutual Learning Mindset. In Part One of the book, Mr. Schwarz develops the foundation – the core beliefs and assumptions you should adopt to become a skilled facilitator.Also covered in the Foundation are the Eight behaviors for Mutual Learning and Designing and Developing Effective Groups.In Part Two, he covers Diagnosing and Intervening with Groups. Part Three covers Agreeing to Work Together – the framework for facilitating. Mr. Schwarz does an excellent job of explaining his reasoning for the approach he proposes and provides the research and psychology to support his position.For many facilitators, getting the most out of this book will require some shift in mindset. This does not happen with one reading. So many readers will need repetitive exposure to the ideas and will also require extensive practice to internalize the ideas.If leading teams is your stronger interest, you might find his other book Smart Leaders, Smart Teams a more valuable resource.An excellent resource for anyone wanting to be more effective in leading groups.

I probably have a half-dozen guides to Sicily but this is the one that will go with me! This little book is packed with the best information I've found anywhere. It describes places that none of the other books have mentioned such as tiny fishing villages. It's up to date, lists restaurants, and is written in a very personal tone, as though one friend is telling another about an upcoming trip and what not to miss. The book is small,lightweight, includes maps and detailed driving directions and walking tours. I love it!
I have no conflict of interest with the publisher.Of three guidebooks I consulted for a recent trip to Mallorca, this was by far the most practical. You can even judge this book by its cover: perfectly sized to slip in a bag or pocket, durable and stain-resistant, concise and full of vibrant, representative illustrations that still leave plenty of sights to discover on your own. Although the Rough Guide had more detail, here the information is succinct and well organized. There is some general background information, but most of the local highlights are structured into regional tours that are each easily doable in a day. So instead of an overwhelming list, you have a menu from which to choose or combine to make up your own itinerary.Admittedly, this approach is not comprehensive and some sights are inevitably left out. But for a first-time visitor, there is more than enough here to fill at least a week of nonstop discovery. My only small criticism is that the restaurant recommendations seemed rather arbitrary. Whichever one was featured, it seemed to me there was an almost identical establishment on either side! But in these days of TripAdvisor, such points are moot. What really counts is that the descriptions and directions here are generally bang-on. I would only quibble with the subjective gushing over the charms of Arta, which seemed like a dusty maze of medieval bunkers to me, and the description of Cala Rajada as “up and comingâ€. Unless that is a euphemism for a new concentration of tacky development. Each chapter has its own regional map which, although small, is clear and helpfully highlighted. The back flap contains a high quality road map of the entire island. As a bonus, the book comes with a free version you can download onto your phone, making it even more convenient on the go.Overall, as the Brits would say, this book is brilliant.
All travel books offer something a little different, therefore I have 5 books on Sicily before our upcoming trip there. That said, this is the one that I will be carrying with me.
this book had some well laid out suggested tours and places to visit that weren't highlighted in the other travel books. It complements some of the other travel bibles like Eyewitness or Rick Steves.
Well-thought-out and nicely organized routes - I used this book MANY times during my week in Mallorca. It was more helpful than the 3 other books that I also had with me. I just kept going back to this one and being pleasantly surprised by the the correctness of it and the nice suggestions that it offered. Was also happy for its light weight in my travel bags. (Some other books were too dense and heavy.) Enjoy!
I leave for Italy on 9/18. Received my tour book today. Ever so impressed! Detailed information and naps, plus pull ot directions to drive around Sicily. Great maps and instructions on how to cultuize oneself, also. Well worth the price. Buy it!
