It is a very comprehensive guide covering every angle of this daunting task. This is a simply written and easy to understand. I highly recommend it.
Sadly I had to read this on my way down to a spare of the moment time. I was an executor and I had to know more about what the job meant and this book did a good job on informing me. Though I wish you had put "Probate" closer to the start of this book as I was confused on the many times you spoke about it during the book. I ended up reading it in way later chapters.This covers many things I had to deal with and was(is) a great source of information. Something every one should read before any issues arise in ones life, as it will help you to prepare the job before some one passes away. The book gives you knowledge in a lot of areas that would help you prevent headaches after loss. Such as ways to avoid "Probate". I do wish I had read this before hand. But it worked just as well after hand as well.Thank you for the book and your knowledge towards the subject.
Have only read excerpts from this book so far,but it has already helped me immensely. I felt lost and overwhelmed by the task of being Executor, but the book reduced it to human scale and laid a series of small, achievable tasks, Right off the bat, learned that the Estate was considered "small" and therefore qualified for a simplified probate process. That alone justified the purchase price!
My father in law died recently with a rather small and relatively uncomplicated Will, so my husband, who was named as the Executor, decided to try and Probate the Will without the use of a lawyer. That meant I would be the one handling all the work. I was a little worried, so I bought this book and read it before I agreed to undertake the task. (A really nice Amazon feature was that I was able to buy an add-on copy of the book in Kindle form for only an additional $2.99 so I was able to start reading it immediately.) The book was fabulous and gave me all the tools, and, therefore, the confidence to act on my own. I learned so much about the process of Estate Probating that I believe anyone with a few organizational skills (and a great deal of time and patience) can Probate a simple Will without a lawyer. Of course, I must warn you that this Estate had no outstanding debts, no real estate and only some IRA's, some cash accounts and a checking account. Moreover, I am not sure I will be able to do the Estate taxes or the final Income Tax when the time comes for that. so, I may need to hire a Tax Accountant for that part, although I have done my own taxes for over 40 years using paper and pencil, then Turbo Tax when that was invented. In sum, this is a great book.
My dad.s estate attorney quite honestly was nice, but not very helpful. I'm almost finished with my dads estate-it has been over a year since he passed. Due to family circumstances I was required to change from an agreed to supervised estate to unsupervised estate. If it wasn't for this book, I would not have known what needed to go to probate and what could be excluded. I made the personal inventory list as requested by the attorney-her fee is based on size of the estate. After I read the book, I realized that a good chunk of funds should not be included on the list based on how my dad set up a few accounts. I mentioned it to the attorney and we took it off the list going to be filed in court. I was a little annoyed about that and made sure I read ALL of the chapters that applied to us. Also explains tax forms that need to be filed for estate and deceased family member. I'm very lucky I knew where most of my dads paperwork was for items and passwords after he died. Even though I hope to live a long time, I'm going to get the NOLO book on organizing your affairs for my executor.
I found this book to be a great guide when dealing with the death of a loved one. and their estate. Most people don't know or even have an idea what is involved in handling and settling an estate. (I admit I didn't.) Even though I had an attorney to handle most aspects, this book provides insight written in terms that I could understand that I'm able to assist my attorney and understand the "why, how, where, what, etc" of what she is doing. It helps me understand why things took so long and what you can and can't do right away. I brought three books which were recommended and found that this book was the most helpful.I also found this book useful to put my affairs in order to help my executor with my estate so he doesn't run into some of the same problems I am running into.I would recommend this book to someone who is handling all aspects of an estate, some aspects of an estate or preplanning an estate.
A very essential book. Well written and it has appendices to provide some state specific information. The book does not replace a lawyer BUT, you will save many times over the purchase price if you read it before you visit the attorney. You will know the questions you want to ask and you will be well informed about the process. Most important, you will know your rights and obligations. This is really important if the "dearly departed" decided to make you a co-executor or if everybody does not always "play nicely together". The best advice in the book is probably that you have a right to "not play"; the author explains the various roles and duties. Buy it and read it BEFORE you need it.

This was such a wonderful book. To learn the story of John Newton was a blessing. I have purchased several and sent them to others. An amazing story about an amazing man. Would recommend to anyone.
Just finished reading 'Out of the Depths' the autobiography of John Newton! This man was nothing like I had in my mind as he was born of a christian mother who urged him to be a minister but he instead followed a life of sin for many years. He spotted his future wife when she was 13 yrs old, many years before they married and he said he loved her from the very first glance and that love never for one moment changed! He exposes his sin, making no excuses until God began to touch his life in ways he could not ignore! I feel I know him now and will even feel differently when I sing his marvelous song 'Amazing Grace'! Great book!
Taught to read at 3, reading with comprehension at 4, taught latin at 6, then mother died and his life went off the rails. It is amazing how many times I've heard people refer to John Newton's life and legacy and how often it has been wrong. It is most insightful to read an autobiography, the person him or herself get to tell you their story. Blessings, Will
We purchased this before seeing the musical, "Amazing Grace," and have been very pleased to learn how closely the musical stayed to Newton's life story. An amazing story of God's faithful persistence and love.
Maybe it's just because there's a time warp between when John Newton wrote his letters and the present day, but I felt a little disappointed in reading his autobiography. As if the real feeling was missing. It felt like a record of events without the emotion that must surely have accompanied those events.Full credit to Dennis R Hillman, without whose footnotes I would've missed a lot of innuendo.Very well done, an incredible story, but next time I'll read someone else's account of Newton's life.
I read this book before reading "The Life and Spirituality of John Newton". This book appeared to be watered down and not as well written as John Newton's own words. The author noted that he changed the style and wording to make the biography more understandable, but I preferred the original.It was a good book and gave me a decent understanding of John Newton's life and trials, but wasn't as deep spiritually.
I bought this title because I just read the William Wilberforce Biography. This book was pretty much what I expected, but was a little shorter than I thought it would be. I loved the faith journey taken by Newton best of all. This is a nice, short, compact book that will give you a taste of Newton, and its all from his mouth, first person. I also bought Amazing Grace in John Newton, which is a little more of a biography. I haven't read that yet though. I would recommend it though!
