The other two reviews go into more detail on the history of this book, but as a huge fan of science fiction and graphic novels I knew I had to get this. I love the older comics (specifically the EC era of comics) and Fantagraphics is doing a great job with these artists collections. I have ordered several more based on this one. The quality is very good and the inking and lettering is great; easy to read. I love the short stories as they are easy to pick up at any time and enjoy. The artwork is stupendous and very enjoyable to simply look. What a skill. I enjoy the art from these older comics more than I do most newer comics. Just great fun to read. A blast from the past.
Read these anthologies, of the 1950's, comic book, science fiction masters. The artwork alone, is out standing. The stories, within, each volume, is a treasure trove, of imagination. The use of black and white, instead of rainbows, of colors, provides so much depth, and allows, one's own mind, to expand, the experience. I cut my own teeth, on the early, Flash Gordon, black and white serials, of the 1930's. The science fiction comic books, on the candy and cigar store shelves, were all in color. If it were not for Amazon, I would have never discovered, the wonderful, world of colorless, science fiction, stories.
Excellent stories mostly drawn by Feldstein. There was something about the blocky. pulpy way that he drew these that makes them seem especially weird and jokey at the same time. 4 stars out of 5. 5 out of 5 stars if these were in color (you can probably find the Weird Science stories in the EC Archive editions, but where do you find the Weird Fantasy stories except in reprints or the originals.
A classic. I loved it. The black and white art is stunning.
I've started collecting all of the Fantagraphics titles and this is one of my favorites. Feldsteins great art style with massive amounts of dialogue. One of the first stories 'Invasion of the Flying Saucers' is based I believe on the Roswell NM etc. and the first sightings of UFO's in our United States. Great scary ending too in the very last panel! I highly recommend this book! Let me add that as an artist, I love all books in Black/White format. I actually prefer it, probably because I read Warren's Creepy and Eerie when I was young. Buy this book!
This is a 200-page Fantagraphics Books edition of EC comics, focussing on the sci-fi tales of Al Feldstein. Al was primarily a writer, but he's also a stunning artist whose specialty is bodacious women (va va va VOOM!). The sci fi tales often focus on nuclear (or other) annihilation, most have a twist at the end, some are corny, but all are great in some way or another. He also likes to get into scientific explanations, which is always cool. Finally, his ability to draw cosmic beasties is pretty cool, whether they're atomic mutants, Lovecraftian horrors, or just funny-looking aliens.'"Things" From Outer Space' is an invasion of Earth tale with a twist. 'Am I Man Or Machine?' is weird science brain noir. 'The Flying Saucer Invasion' is another twisted UFO tale. 'Cosmic Ray Bomb Explosion!' is about science imitating art, with a bit of metafiction thrown in as we play fly on the wall to the creative process (very clever). 'Destruction of the Earth!' is just that - another nuclear cautionary tale. 'Martian Infiltration!' is just that. 'Panic!' is just that... a cool ironic take on Orson Welles' famous War Of The Worlds radio play panic (here the famous actor is called "Carson Walls"). 'The Last City' is more nuclear MADness, this time with an impenetrable force field! More science!! 'Made of the Future!' is a gleefully strange robot companion tale that's full of lingerie babes. And an ironic ending! 'Child of Tomorrow!' is more nuclear MADness, with all sorts of death and destruction, atomic mutants, and an ironic ending! 'Spawn of Venus' is a frightening tale of unstoppable alien creatures, pretty amazing. Also lots of death and destruction. 'Space Warp!' is a nutso story of space & time travel, and how physics affects space travellers' lives! 'It was the Monster From the Fourth Dimension' is a cool science tale and another blob monster... '7 Year Old Genius!' is about a kid with an atomic brain who solves all of the world's problems... and creates a few more. Some nuclear MADness, and a bit of metafiction at the end. Nice cameo from Professor "Halbert Steinein", who gives up science in humiliation of our 7-year-old and starts selling chemistry sets. 'Seeds of Jupiter!' is another horrific "unstoppable alien beast" story, lots of death and destruction here too. 'The Origin of the Species!' is an amazing space-and-time travel tale about the distant past, the green moon, and more irony. 'House, in Time!' is another bizarre time travel tale, a strange house, and a strange professor. Ironic ending, of course. 'Across the Sun!' is a pretty amazing nuclear MADness cautionary tale about our neighbours in the solar system and what they can teach us about ourselves. 'The Escape' is a nutso tale of three astronauts and a space mission gone wrong. 'The Slave Ship' is cosmic irony about slavery. 'The Slave of Evil!' is a bizarre existential robot tale. 'The Connection' is a bizarre "Somewhere In Time" tale, nice ironic ending. 'Strategy!' is a completely bizarre alien invasion story. Brain experiments happen too!The book has a detailed introduction that mostly just describes the events and strengths of each story (and sometimes giving interesting trivia), but is otherwise uninteresting. So is an interview Al at the end that doesn't reveal too much, as well as histories of EC Comics and William Gaines.Nice to know that Al was financially successful, and retired to a huge ranch in Montana in 1985.
