I have to say I have never sat down and read this book in the normal way. Instead I tend to read it by browsing through and choosing a particular section and then just enjoying that section. The way it is set up, this kind of periodic enjoyment is perfect, as there are many different sections and each has a distinct topic. In particular I enjoyed the archived correspondence and the technical details of the film planning -- budgets, camera plans, cast logistics. There are relatively few studies of large film productions from this era, so even though this film was never made, the details are fascinating to read.Be warned, this is a huge and heavy book. It is hard to hold on your lap and really needs a horizontal place of honor for storage. I hate to suggest a coffee table but maybe a Napoleonic cabinet would work.

I am getting into stop motion and like bought this book for some pointers. However it is very specific to materials and technique and I needed something broader. I wouldn't make the investment in materials for what is practically professional quality animation. I did find the book well written, clear and well illustrated ( Kindle edition) ; perhaps a little too brief. I certainly don't regret purchasing it.
This book is pricey but the information it contains is very hard to get elsewhere. Its for a person who wants to make professional level figures for stop motion animation, maybe advanced hobbyists who are pretty serious about it.There are three major sections to the book:1. how to to sculpting of figures in clays2. How to take these clay sculptures and turn them into foam injected puppets3. How to do the foam build up method over an armature to create a puppet.This is a fifty dollar investment so I will give you more about these things.Parts 1 and 2 are all about sculpting a clay figure then casting a plaster mold around it. Once that mold is done you put the armature in and cast the foam into it. This whole process is pretty involved and you have to take care of a lot of details. But, if you get this all down you will create some amazing puppets. I tried this whole process but could never get it right. That's my failing not the book. I ended up moving on to the process in section 3....In section 3 you create an armature then build up pieces of foam around it. This makes the musculature and shape of the figure. Then you coat it with materials and latex rubber to give it a skin. I did all this and successfully created my puppet (2 foot dragon)So, The book is good, shows the processes but you have got to be serious about the making of animation puppets.

Virtually all stop-motion books on the market cover sculpted puppets using only wire armatures.The manual adequately explains what it set out to do, namely to explain the process of foam injection and foam buildup techniques. A chapter is devoted to basic sculpting techniques to initiate a beginner in the amenities of muscle structure and its importance to the creation of more realistic stop-motion models. This was, however, not the crux of the manual per se, which is why only one chapter was devoted to sculpting.The primarily complaints seem to be in its cost and the quality of the paper stock and images, as well as absence of more material to make the book more "saleable". However, further detail explanations of other types of anatomies (i.e. quadrupeds, fantasy creatures, etc.), would have driven the cost of the manual up exponentially. The manual is overpriced as it is.An entire chapter is devoted to the foam injection technique, and is explained in a simple and concise easy-to-follow explanation. As such, the manual has been geared to people interested in the art form, but who do not have advanced skill levels in sculpting, mold making, and foam injection.Regrettably, the publisher chose to use black and white photographs, and at low resolution. As such, the images suffer. It would have been preferable to use higher resolution images, and in color.If a kitchen oven cannot be used for foam injection in one's home, one might try to be resourceful enough to not give up and think of an alternative solution; namely, to use a kiln oven in a garage or other room that is out of harms way. It is common knowledge in the visual effects/stop-motion community that hot foam can be difficult and toxic to work with. The manual only confirms this.Given the subject matter and material covered within the manual, it should be less expensive, given what one gets for their investment. One should consider contacting the publisher if they feel that the manual is overpriced, or at the very least return the item if they are not satisfied.

You won't find a History channel adventure here but a well laid out path from one Emperor to the next during the Roman Empire. If you're looking for a great deal of "color" in your history you might be better off with a different book as this is an A to Z accounting but if you want the facts as well as we know them without the fluff I think you might enjoy this book.
Great summary and intro the long line of emperors who ruled over Rome. Covers a time span from Augustus to Romulus Augustulus and everything in-between. Each chapter covers the highlights and personalities of each emperor. They are a ton of colorful graphics (like timelines) and pictures to clarify a point or detail something important. Since I purchased this off of Amazon’s Marketplace, it was a used copy. It came in great condition and shipped quickly.Great book if you’re looking for some quick research or a refresher.Would gladly recommend to others.
They give a 2 page spread of info for each emperor. Not an overload of information, while still informative and interesting.
This book gives a very thorough, surprisingly readable and commendably balanced look at the succession of Roman emperors from Augustus through Romulus Augustulus. The subject may be considered rather dry for most readers, and I won't claim that someone not inherently interested in the subject matter could find themselves captivated by this book, but for a reader who has voluntarily chosen to read up on the subject, this book does a very good job of keeping the information coming at a pace that is slow enough to be comprehensible but fast enough to avoid tedium.It is also true that the author does a fine job of identifying bias in the reports of the most common sources of this history, so that this book provides a history that acknowledges the reports of both pagan and Christian historians, but does not blindly accept what either group has to say about emperors who they either demonize or deify. This is a very worthwhile practice, and so overall the book is a very helpful primer for a novice on the subject.
I read a lot of history, and whenever Roman emperors were mentioned, my knowledge felt a little lacking. After carefully reading this book and taking notes, I feel like I have a whole new weapon in my arsenal. Every emperor is given a decent explanation, and it did an excellent job of rounding out my knowledge and refreshing my memory. I wish Scarre would cover the whole history of the empire that succinctly.
This book is great either as refresher material, companion to more in depth histories, or something to make you look deeper to your friends and potential sexual conquests. I bought it for all the pretty pictures, and because I'd just finished the Decline and Fall of the Western Roman Empire by (Sir?) Edward Gibbon. The latter being an incredibly dense, though enjoyable read. I wanted something light, colorful, and quick to read. Not to mention it's really easy to forget if Nero came before or after Caligula, and whether or not Probus was a tyrant or just misunderstood (possibly only by me). This book, as it turns out, goes out of its way to be as objective as possible. A lot of the judgments passed down through history ma in fact have been incredibly biased by Republicans (NOT the GOP) and Christians alike. For instance Constantine has always been portrayed as some saintly virtuous hero, when in fact he was a scheming back-stabber looking to get all of the Roman Empire under his banner no mater what the cost. Turn the other cheek indeed. Also it gives the true account of the life of Commodus that Hollywood did such an extravagant job of getting wrong in the movie Gladiator. At any rate, this book was pretty good, and offered several hours of entertainment. I would recommend it most to someone who is curious about ancient Rome, but not yet willing to delve into the dusty old tomes of Roman history. If you like this book, you should definitely check out the saga that Colleen McCullough wrote about a decade or so ago. They're truly excellent, and take place at the end of the Republic.

Women who supported and in some cases ruled them, are also included.There is a ton of information in this book.The pleasurable tactile sensations associated with holding and maniplulating a finely wrought tome are an integral part of reading a book -- as opposed to reading a computer screen or skywriting, which are devoid of tactile pleasures -- and this book rests comfortably in the hands.Sturdy, navy blue cloth cover-boards, with a gold publisher's logo on the front cover, and gold lettering on the spine, all wrapped up in an attractive dust jacket, make this book a treat to the eyes, as well as to the touch. And, as befits a reference book intended for much using and perusing, the pages are made of thich, smooth, sturdy, stock.All in all, an afternoon spent in the company of this book could surely be a positive experience for anyone; in fact, lessons could be learned if one isn't careful.

A great book if you're looking for a chance to explore another level of Umbral learning.
This book is the main way the people at White-Wolf decided to bring the Werewolf line into their so-called meta-plot, and as far as I can tell it leads into Werewolf Revised. Now I could care less about the meta-plot. As far as I can tell it is simply an excuse to rewrite their books so you have to go out and by new versions to keep up with the "story." I would be so much happier if the good people at White-Wolf would keep their grubby little hands out of our stories and stop devoting so much time and content to their silly plot. Isn't it our role as storytellers and players to come up with our own plots? A game developer's role is to give us an excellent and detailed background from which we can pull ideas and come up with our own stories.Having said my peace on that, I must say that most of this book is excellent. Remember the Astrological aspects from the 1st edition Player's Guide? Well, this book reintroduces them but on an entirely new level.It only makes sense that the Garou would look to the heavens to find answers to the universe. They are so tied into the moon and its phases, it stands to reason that they might also look to the stars. And most early human cultures did.This book is about astrology from the Garou point of view. While it clearly relies on ideas from ancient human astrology, it does a good job modifying it to fit the werewolves. It devotes a lot of space to the zodiac as a whole, the separate aspects of the zodiac, and how these effect the Garou. All excellent material whether you are simply looking to add a new dimension to the Garou religion or you are actually going to take your players among the stars themselves (personally, I prefer the former). There is also a decent amount of space devoted to prophecies and using them in your game.I know there are some people out there who like pure information without new rules and some who don't think a book is very fulfilling unless it has new stuff for character creation and/or storyteller use. I would definitely say that in this book there is a good balance as far as pure information and new rules, so everyone should be happy. All in all I thought this book was very good and well worth the money. I might have given it five stars were it not for the space they devoted to advancing their meta-plot.
