Review
Jennifer Siegel, The New York Times Book Review“A masterly account... Kotkin offers the sweeping context so often missing from all but the best biographies... Stalin is a complex work... but it presents a riveting tale, one written with pace and aplomb. Kotkin has given us a textured, gripping examination of the foundational years of the man most responsible for the construction of the Soviet state in all its brutal glory.... This first volume leaves the reader longing for the story still to come.”Richard Pipes, The New York Review of Books:“This is a very serious biography that… is likely to well stand the test of time.” The Wall Street Journal:“Superb . . . Mr. Kotkin’s volume joins an impressive shelf of books on Stalin. Only Mr. Kotkin’s book approaches the highest standard of scholarly rigor and general-interest readability.”New Statesman (UK): “[Kotkin’s] viewpoint is godlike: all the world falls within his purview. He makes comparisons across decades and continents.... An exhilarating ride.”Anne Applebaum, The Atlantic:“An exceptionally ambitious biography… Kotkin builds the case for quite a different interpretation of Stalin—and for quite a few other things, too. The book’s signature achievement… is its vast scope: Kotkin has set out to write not only the definitive life of Stalin but also the definitive history of the collapse of the Russian empire and the creation of the new Soviet empire in its place.”Robert Gellately, Times Higher Education (London): “A brilliant portrait of a man of contradictions... In the vast literature on the Soviet Union, there is no study to rival Stephen Kotkin’s massive first instalment of a planned three-volume biography of Joseph Stalin. When it is complete, it will surely become the standard work, and I heartily recommend it.”John Thornhill, Financial Times: "It is a measure of Kotkin’s powers of research and explanation that Stalin’s decisions can almost always be understood within the framework of his ideology and the context of his times.... With a ferocious determination worthy of his subject, the author debunks many of the myths to have encrusted themselves around Stalin.... [A] magnificent biography. This reviewer, at least, is already impatient to read the next two volumes for their author’s mastery of detail and the swagger of his judgments.”David Johnson, Johnson’s Russia List: “Required reading for serious Russia-watchers... As the product of years of work and careful thought, it is for me a reminder of what it takes to get close to the truth about important and controversial subjects. And the distance and time required to do so.”Geoffrey Roberts, Irish Examiner: “Monumental... For Kotkin it was not Stalin’s personality that drove his politics but his politics that shaped his personality. His research, narrative and arguments are as convincing as they are exhaustive. The book is long but very readable and highly accessible to the general reader.... Magisterial.”Donald Rayfield, Literary Review: "Masterful... No other work on Stalin incorporates so well the preliminary information needed by the general reader, yet challenges so thoroughly the specialist's preconceptions. Kotkin has chosen illustrations, many of them little known, which reveal the crippled psyches of his dramatis personae.”Booklist (starred):“An ambitious, massive, highly detailed work that offers fresh perspectives on the collapse of the czarist regime, the rise of the Bolsheviks, and the seemingly unlikely rise of Stalin to total power over much of the Eurasian land mass....This is an outstanding beginning to what promises to be a definitive work on the Stalin era.”Kirkus Reviews (starred):“Authoritative and rigorous…. Staggeringly wide in scope, this work meticulously examines the structural forces that brought down one autocratic regime and put in place another.” Publishers Weekly:“This is an epic, thoroughly researched account that presents a broad vision of Stalin, from his birth to his rise to absolute power.”Library Journal:“Kotkin has been researching his magisterial biography of Stalin for a decade. Inescapably important reading.”John Lewis Gaddis, Yale University; author of George F. Kennan: A Life, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Biography:“In its size, sweep, sensitivity, and surprises, Stephen Kotkin’s first volume on Stalin is a monumental achievement: the early life of a man we thought we knew, set against the world—no less—that he inhabited. It’s biography on an epic scale. Only Tolstoy might have matched it.”William Taubman, Professor of Political Science Emeritus, Amherst College; author of Khrushchev: The Man and his Era, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Biography“Stalin has had more than his fair share of biographies. But Stephen Kotkin’s wonderfully broad-gauged work surpasses them all in both breadth and depth, showing brilliantly how the man, the time, the place, its history, and especially Russian/Soviet political culture, combined to produce one of history’s greatest evil geniuses.”David Halloway, Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History, Stanford University; author of Stalin and the Bomb:“Stephen Kotkin’s first volume on Stalin is ambitious in conception and masterly in execution. It provides a brilliant account of Stalin’s formation as a political actor up to his fateful decision to collectivize agriculture by force. Kotkin combines biography with historical analysis in a way that brings out clearly Stalin's great political talents as well as the ruthlessness with which he applied them and the impact his policies had on Russia and the world. This is a magisterial work on the grandest scale.”Strobe Talbott, president of the Brookings Institution:“More than any of Stalin’s previous biographers, Stephen Kotkin humanizes one of the great monsters of history, thereby making the monstrosity more comprehensible than it has been before. He does so by sticking to the facts—many of them fresh, all of them marshalled into a gripping, fine-grained story.”The Sunday Times (London):“Staggeringly researched, exhaustively thorough... Kotkin has no patience for the idea that Stalin... was a madman or a monster. His personality and crimes, Kotkin thinks, are only explicable in the wider contexts of Russian imperial history and Marxist theory. So this is less a conventional biography than a colossal life and times.... Hugely impressive.”Sheila Fitzpatrick, The Guardian:“Unlike a number of Stalin studies, this is not an etiology of evil. The author does not appear to be watching his subject narrowly for early signs of the monstrous deformations that will later emerge. He tries to look at him at various stages of his career without the benefit of too much hindsight.... [Kotkin] is an engaging interlocutor with a sharp, irreverent wit... making the book a good read as well as an original and largely convincing interpretation of Stalin that should provoke lively arguments in the field.”

I teach a course in Russian politics and have read numerous biographies of Stalin. I wondered how anyone could stretch the story out into three massive volumes. Kit kin did it by creating a brilliant study of Russian history from the late 1800s on. Of course there is a very detailed coverage of Stalin’s own life, but also the best analysis of every aspect of Russian society and politics, both tsarist and soviet that I have seen. I’m just starting volume two and only hope that the author is taking care of himself because, if volume three doesn’t follow, I will have nothing to live for.
I'll keep this short, as I'm not an expert on anything. From what i had, casually, read about the period covered by this book, my impression was that Stalin was a not-so-intelligent, but cunning, thug who brute-forced his way into power on the backs of foe and friend, alike. Maybe there are some "seminal" biographies that arrive at just this conclusion. After finishing this book, my original impression has been revised somewhat. Stalin was a quite intelligent and cunning, Marxist ideologue who, with a mixture of cleverness and good luck, brute-forced his way into power on the backs of foe-and friend alike to carry out his conception of the unfinished work of V. Lenin.I only want to respond to one part of the author's depiction of Stalin's character, his growing paranoia. First of all, almost all of the key actors in this book were paranoid. Second, given the external and internal threats to Bolshevism in thes years, who wouldn't have become paranoid? Finally, Stalin was no more paranoid than your average anti-communist Western leader or high level security bureaucrat during the Cold War.I also disagree that the book is badly written. I liked the author's casual style, and despite the details and length of the book, I found it very captivating, as I had little knowledge about this period or Stalin. The book made lasting impression on me, although it interfered with my sun-bathing during the few summer days we were able to enjoy this year.
This is such a marvelous book that has guaranteed I will read the full trilogy. I started this journey with Anne Applebaum's great book 'Red Famine - Stalin's War on Ukraine' which despite enjoying immensely I realised I would enjoy more if I knew more about Stalin and the Russian Revolution as Anne's book assumes some knowledge I didn't have. This then triggered me to read the wonderful Simon Sebag Montefiere book 'Red Tsar' another wonderful book that covered Stalin from 1928, but really kicks off in 1934 through to his death, this meant I needed more knowledge of Stalin's earlier years. Simon himself via twitter suggested this book by Kotkin & what a great book, truly stunning, more than a book this is an achievement, the depth of insight you get, not just into Stalin but into the societal fissures that made a Stalin figure possible, with a deep dive into Tsarist Russia you develop an understanding of how the Bolshevik coup was made possible, then despite kind of skipping through Stalin's role in the Civil War and even the Revolution itself, the information given on that period and Trotsky gives you the background you need to understand the final 2/3 of the book where the Stalin v Trotsky war is covered in minute detail.Just a wonderful wonderful book, can not recommend it highly enough. If you have any desire to learn about Stalin, The Russian Revolution or even Tsarism, then I can't imagine there is a better book out there to kick off your learning. I may come back to add more to this review lately, as I still have the epilogue to read, but finishing the period mentioned in the title [Birth to 1928] i cannot express how delighted I am to have discovered this book, I truly thank Simon for recommending it, Kotkin for writing it and whoever the publisher is for committing to publish such an exhaustive work. Read this wonderful book
This is a good book. It suffers from some significant flaws but is definitely worth reading.First three negative comments, then the positive. 1) Kotkin chooses to ignore some critical information about Stalin's childhood. A number of recent studies, based largely on evidence that Stalin, once in power, insisted be locked away in archives, reveals the young boy to have suffered material deprivation and a lot of physical and emotional abuse. Do the newly available records show conclusively that Stalin was so damaged that he became a sociopath? No. But those records are highly suggestive. Yet in several places--most notably on page 735--Kotkin says "the beatings likely never took place." Now how on earth could Kotkin know that? He never explains why he disregards the evidence of abuse let alone why, if there were no good evidence, we should believe in a Caucasian version of Little House on the Prairie.Kotkin goes on to suggest that Stalin did not become sociopathic until he was an adult, brutalized by his political conflicts with Trotsky and others. In short, the evil emerged when Stalin was in his 40s. That, though, is as strange a view of personality development as it is of the man himself. The prevailing view among psychologists is that psychopathy/sociopathy are either genetic or induced by extreme abuse during childhood. The notion that a man could be normal, or nearly normal, until nearly middle age and then develop the sort of sadism exhibited by Stalin is a real stretch. Furthermore, it requires almost a willful decision to ignore several instances of ruthless behavior during Stalin's 20s and 30s, a pervasive philandering, and a penchant for violence (or ordering violence) that was both widely recognized and typical of the main Bolsheviks. Once again, Kotkin offers no alternative to the plausible story told by students of the newly available records: that Stalin was profoundly damaged in childhood and developed through adolescence and early adulthood the way most sociopaths do.2) A number of the recent studies (for example, Montefiore's Young Stalin) have found in the archives answers to a previously perplexing question. Namely, why would Lenin in the late 1910s treat a Georgian rube with few ties to Russian and European Marxist leaders as well as he did Stalin? Why was Stalin preferred so consistently over older and more experienced, more connected Bolsheviks? Several of the recent studies contend that Stalin ran a gang of thugs in the Caucasus, and particularly in Baku, that robbed banks, kidnapped members of rich families and held them for ransom, etc., and then forwarded the money to Lenin and his associates. Stalin was a big source of funding for the Bolsheviks, so Lenin needed him. Now, however, Kotkin says that the case for Stalin's life as a gangster is largely unproven. That is strictly true; the evidence is certainly not "beyond a reasonable doubt." But in history the standard is "what is the most reasonable, the most logical explanation?" and in that context the gangster theory has a lot going for it. When Kotkin then insists that Stalin did not run a criminal enterprise that financed much of the Bolshevik effort, he leaves us once again facing that troublesome original question: why would Lenin have treated Stalin so well for so long? Having resurrected the question, Kotkin ventures no answer at all.3) In order to argue against the newly consensual view that Stalin had a horrible childhood, emerged as a young sociopath, organized a criminal gang, and forwarded his earnings to Lenin, Kotkin has no choice but to ignore the bulk of the evidence that is available regarding Stalin's early decades. The result is a strange reticence. Why would a biographer refuse to address a significant body of evidence about his subject? Perhaps to differentiate his book from other recently published biographies. In any case, the silence about young Stalin is a significant flaw in a book that purports to be a biography. Ultimately that silence renders the book more a history of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union than a description of Stalin's life. Now the positive. As a history of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union, the book is excellent. One example is Kotkin's description of the factional struggles in the socialist movement before the October 1917 Revolution and afterwards. The analysis here is clearer than in most books and does a better job of explaining why, for instance, Stalin turned against Kamenev and Zinoviev when he did and why he later had no choice but to isolate and weaken Bukharin, Rykov, and Tomsky. Kotkin shows quite persuasively why these were pragmatic moves and not simply the result of Stalin's sadism and opportunism. Another strength is Kotkin's treatment of "Lenin's Testament" and the other documents that magically appeared after Lenin's death and that purported to show that Lenin wanted Stalin ousted from power. The author's contention that those documents may have been fabricated by Stalin's enemies is well-argued and well-documented. Kotkin certainly changed my view on that matter. Finally, whereas a lot of writers describe Stalin as a mere opportunist with little ideological conviction, Kotkin demonstrates a consistent devotion to Marxism-Leninism that reasserted itself time and again in Stalin's actions and policies. The result is a portrayal of Stalin not as a cynical and sadistic opportunist but as a zealous communist who, when necessary, made tactical retreats with cynical and sadistic ease. He was a murderous sociopath, but an ideologically committed and consistent one.So the book is definitely worth reading. I really regret the sparse analysis of Stalin's youth. One of the problems that arises constantly in history is the way in which ruthless leaders--Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden--rise to the top of their movements or states. These people often combine political charisma, geopolitical insight, extreme cynicism, vindictiveness, and sadism. To understand what produces, and will continue to produce, such "leaders" one must understand their childhood environments and experiences. An author who chooses to ignore or de-emphasize such factors does the student of history and of current events a disservice by refusing to shed any light on the wellsprings of human evil. Nevertheless, Kotkin's book is a very solid treatment of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union and, by its latter chapters, its focus on Stalin has sharpened somewhat.I hope he moves further in that direction in the second volume.

Every gift has a price . . . Every piece of lace has a secret . . . My name is Towner Whitney. No, That's not exactly true. My real first name is Sophya. Never believe me. I lie all the time . . . Towner Whitney, the self-confessed unreliable narrator of The Lace Reader, hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations, but the disappearance of two women brings Towner home to Salem and the truth about the death of her twin sister to light. The Lace Reader is a mesmerizing tale that spirals into a world of secrets, confused identities, lies, and half-truths in which the reader quickly finds it's nearly impossible to separate fact from fiction, but as Towner Whitney points out early on in the novel, "There are no accidents."

I'd been given this book years ago as a gift for one reason; I am a lace maker and the giver thought I'd be interested. The gift copy sat on my bed stand for years and I finally gave it away. I then bought a Kindle copy since it would be easier to read.My supposition was that this was primarily a fantasy based book related to a mysticism around lace. That's not correct. This is a murder mystery/drama with some use of mythology as a device. There really is not much here regarding lace at all and ironically it is the one form of lace I do not make ( bobbin). That aside I felt deeply attached to the characters and enjoyed the book thoroughly. This is not my preferred genre but the writing rose above that definition.I am now reading the author's follow up book The Fifth Petal and have been surprised at how much I missed these characters. Worth your time, lots of historical content about Ametica's treatment of witches.
Amazingly well written story that is as unique as each shell in the sea! It gripped me from the beginning with descriptions that created visions of this world, it's inhabitants and the lace they created and read. There is a brief period as you near the climax that left me questioning if there actually was one or had I missed it...a period needed to prepare the reader for what was to come...A climax that made my heart beat faster, my shoulders tense and hooked me on every word as I navigated the unexpected twists and turns, the revelations and understanding of the evil that unfortunately is very real in this world! The most unusual thing about this story is that I was satisfied when I finished it, not crying out to know more or feeling patronized with a happily-ever-after closing...but left in a place to believe in the power of hope and healing. You won't regret a moment spent with this story!!
I love a book that doesn't give the reader all the information at once, and that's the case here. I liken it to meeting a new friend - you get to know them a little at a time. The characters the author develops are interesting and real, and the story unfolds at a great pace. Our heroine, Towner, isn't perfect and is easy to like, but even though a large part of the book is first person from Towner's point of view, we sense there is something more, something hidden under the surface. The storyline kept me entertained and wanting to return for more. Loved it!
While I thought the writing needed some editing, the storyline is compelling and the characters are drawn clearly and well. I don't know if this is a self-publication effort, but it reads like one. By that I mean that most books by traditional publishers are tightly written with very little ambiguity in the telling of the tale. This book is not that though it improves as the story moves along. Point of view changes are not smooth and sometimes confuse. If I have to reread a portion of a book in order to understand what is happening, I judge it not as well written as it could be no matter how much I like the premise and the story.
I really wanted to like this book - it has some great plot elements and interesting characters - but, in the end, it was just too much melodrama for my taste. It reads like a self-indulgent soap opera - albeit, a well-performed one. If that's your thing, here's your book - enjoy ;-)
I loved everything about this book from the setting, to the characters, to the plot that kept me guessing to the end whether I was being led astray or not. I loved the book so much that I immediately purchased Ms. Barry's second book without reading a sample - and I rarely pay that much for a Kindle book. I mean, how can those charges be justified when there are no printing/shipping/etc. costs? But anyway, the second book, to me, was a bomb. Absolutely nothing like the first one. I was left wondering if it was created in a hurry to follow up on the success of her first. Either way, I had high hopes after reading this book that I'd discovered a beautiful new writing voice. After the second book, that I couldn't even finish, I have high hopes that it was a bump in the road and book three will be back on track. But I believe if book three comes out I'll download a free sample first...or visit the library.
**"Never believe me. I lie all the time."** The self-admitted unreliable narrator takes the reader on a compelling and spellbinding journey of revelation. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, this novel intricately weaves together resonate history and sense of place, with mystic suspension of belief, and a thrilling mystery centered around two missing women, memory gaps, and the death of the narrator's twin sister. Barry's story telling is textured, patterned, smart, and suspenseful. I was enthralled with this beautifully moving book. That said, some of the content is traumatic and tragic, and might not be suitable for all readers.
There are so many levels to this book that it demands a close, attentive reading. There are more threads to the story than there would be in a huge piece of lace. The characters in this story, good and bad, are reminiscent of people we all know, and their actions are the ones we know, somewhere in ourselves, could happen far too easily. From fundamentalist fanatics to would-be (and apparently real) witches, this is the story of the whole human race, encased in one short time in modern Salem, Mass. Do yourself a favor, and read this book! It will haunt you for a long time to come.

Wolfe has put together an eclectic anthology on what the subtitle calls (after Derrida) "the question of the animal." Wolfe's excellent introduction and his long examination of Wittgenstein's famous dictum--"If a lion could talk, we could not understand him"--range much further than simply an analysis of language games and are worth the price of the book in themselves. I look forward to reading Animal Rites immensely. I thought Steve Baker's "Sloughing the Human" about animals and art deserved to be longer and Alphonso Lingis's "Animal Body, Inhuman Face," which I'd read in Animal Others, once more provded fascinating, weird, and very suggestive. I can't say I really "got" Judith Roof's essay on Freud's psychoanalysis of the single-celled organism, and my predisposition not to take psychoanalysis seriously as a science probably colored my response to Derrida's deconstruction of Lacan's Cartesianism in "And Say the Animal Responded?" (Wolfe explains Derrida much better than I think Derrida does!) Ursula Heise's chapter on virtual reality, dinosaurs, and Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" was thought-provoking and Charlie LeDuff's investigation inside a racially divided slaughterhouse in North Carolina once more reminded me of how politicized and gendered the killing and consumption of animals is. Indeed, this piece (which comes at the end of the book) highlights that when it comes to animals, it (philosophy, theory, food) can never be only about theory. A well-constructed and provocative volume.

Overall, this book is convoluted, making it difficult to follow and learn much from. Some of the answers to the chapter review questions are not covered until a later chapter. Some critical concepts to have illustrated are not illustrated while other illustrations give zero information on what you're looking at and how it applies to the chapter. There are chapter review sections with errors in the dimensions given. I find that a lot of the information given is cursory, lacking enough detail to fully convey the information. Without a competent teacher to wade through the chapters with, I would be totally lost reading this book.
So often in building items that need specific details, engineering drawings are used to accommodate that purpose. I have found that this publication "Interpreting Engineering Drawings" has helped me understand and use engineering drawings to a much higher degree. It has explained symbols and reasons for using these. It has explained the drawings, why, where, how and when to do the things that need to be done at specific times under specific conditions and for varying reasons. This publication answers all those questions and more. For anyone who is needing a very good explanation on engineering drawings. I would highly recommend this publication, it will answer your needed questions.Sincerely, Alvan L. Peterman

I learned about this text from a colleague who read about it. We created an entire unit with No Choirboy as our anchor text amid articles, podcasts, documentaries, etc., and it was the perfect way to end the year! My 10th graders were so engaged, especially my intensive group. They made so many connections to previous texts we've read and were astonished to learn about our penitentiary & judicial systems. I had students who said they had not read an entire book in years actually read this one cover-to-cover. The structure of the text (lack of interview questions, use of text features like italics for Kuklin's commentary, etc.) was slightly more complex than I anticipated, and provided interesting discussion because it encouraged my students to conduct more thorough close readings. I couldn't help but chuckle every time some one of my lower-level babies made comments about grammar or corrected the text when they read aloud. The content and style affords No Choirboy a place on my "must read" list, especially because students WANTED to learn, read, write & discuss after enduring a brutal testing season. I ended the school year feeling proud of how equipped & prepared my students are to intelligently & respectfully participate in such a crucial dialogue.
This is a book that brings you face to face with the reality of the legal system, the oppression of poverty, and the realities of lives gone wrong. It puts humanity into inhuman acts and force the reader to see what society does to not only the victims but the offenders. Written with the voice of the condemned the book allows readers to see where bad choices lead you and how justice may not be as justified as it looks. Good for young adults who can't see or need to see the realities of consequences from a first person perspective.
I will be using this second semester for my 9th grade English class. It is captivating and very engaging. A great look into the real lives of people that have gotten in too deep and are paying with their life.
I bought this for my 7th grade son who is not a big fan of reading. The stories are told in the words of the convicts, so the language can be intense. I strongly recommend that you read this along with your child and talk about what your child is reading. The book opened the door for us to have some really wonderful conversations.
Love this book, especially for teenagers. My students are eating it up right now in independent reading! I suggested it to one student, and then she loved it so much that she suggested it to some other students. Next thing you know they came by to see if I had any other copies to give out! I may need to buy some more!
This book is amazing. The subject matter is a surefire draw, but the execution (no pun intended) is perfection. Teens will be drawn to this because of the cover, the title, and the subject matter, and will not be disappointed. They will undoubtedly recommend it to friends, and I'm sure that no matter how many copies I buy for my high school library, I won't be able to keep up with the demand.
Good book with some information that is new to me. Sad, yet interesting.
Susan Kuklin's disjointed book No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row is suppposed to take the reader inside the US Prison system and explore the question of capital punishment. It does none of that. While the self-told stories of some young murderers are moving, we are given no perspective on why they are where they are.The book gives the reader no insight into the morality of capital punishment or any suggestion as to an alternative. In some way we are led to believe that two of these young murderers are less frightening and less dangerous because they write poetry.Ms. Kuklin's dialogue by the siblings of William Jenkins in chapter five, lacks depth and feeling. It is pointless.Ms. Kuklin claims to be a photographer, but the photos of people and places in the book are grainy and without merit.I am unable to understand how on the dust cover Booklist can call this work "Searing and provocative..."While most of her subjects are certainly not Choirboys, Ms. Kuklin has provided no music for them to sing.

The Data Driven Leader resonated completely with my own experiences and personal bias for HR professionals to be stronger, data-driven business leaders. I found the approach very practical, the writing very thoughtful and the use of specific examples very helpful—especially the last chapter that provided key Impact metrics. Highly recommended reading for business people who are on a journey to become more objective (vs. completely intuitive) decision-makers and leaders.
Nailed it. Again. As any new field of expertise emerges, charlatans abound who say profound things without much substance. This follow up to Data Driven is practical and practicable. Soon enough it will be taken for granted that these capabilities are pre-requisite to manage the performance of people. I have recommended the first book to anyone interested in their people Analytics journey and shall do this same with this volume (likewise read in one sitting)
Well constructed case and works beautifully!
Must read for all leaders. Shows how all interdependent success and failure is in organizations - nothing wins or loses alone! Excellent tutorial on what and how to measure in organizations to lead from strength and KPIs that matter. The future of HR. The future of sustainable business. Every business is a data business. (Note I received this book at an event where Jenny Dearborn was the keynote. She was awesome in person too.)
While the book was entertaining the story took away from what was desire to be taught. This book covered a fictional world that does not go into much detail. It is good if everything works out like the book shows.

This was a lot of fun. There's a whole book of set up - Planet Hulk - but it's neatly summarized in this book. A group of heroes, tired of the Hulk's rage, shot him into space into what they thought would be a paradise world. It wasn't. After fighting for his survival there, Hulk won and has returned with an army to seek revenge. The Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the US Army throw everything at the Hulk but to no avail. One by the one the heroes of the Marvel Universe fall and a good chunk of New York is leveled as we watch the final epic battle. There are some minor problems, it's hard to believe that a genius like Reed Richards or a sorcerer with a wealth of powers like Dr Strange can't think of more ways to stop the Hulk than we see. And the ending is a bit pat, with everything restored to the status quo. But it's still a fun slug fest with a lot of emotion and heart. The only real flaw is that this is a serial book set in the Marvel Universe so in the end, everything is put (more or less) right. And somehow no one is killed or even seriously hurt. But that's the price of reading a book set in the main universe and if you're a long time comic reader like me, you might snarl at it, but you accept it as well.So yes, I recommend it.
I read this some time ago as a set of print mags. Thank god I bought them all as a set. It was an evening read I could not put down. Then a few weeks ago I was stumbling around Amazon as I am won't to do and there it was again. I'd given my print versions to a young friend who'd never heard of the series. And when I saw the series in Amazon the fire and excitement that I'd felt before rose up in me. The reading was as good and as much a rush as before. HULK SMASH! Feels good to see Hulk triumph! Unequivocally! The team did very well. And if this becomes a movie, I do hope they do it well. It deserves the full treatment as a mini series. Well done Marvel. Another gem for the treasure trove.
I would have given this five stars if not for the art. Romita does landscapes decently well, but I really dislike his human characters, particularly the faces.Once you get past the arts this is a good story, and a fine sequential the excellent planet hulk. So hulk and insufficient followers from planet hulk arrive on earth to reap revenge for the whole exile and exploding ship deal. The rest of the book is just a series of interesting fights, as each hero team and illuminati members line up to take their shot at the worldbreaker. It was interesting seeing hulk and friends wallow in their rage and almost become like the red king they fought so hard to overthrow, and even at his angriest hulk strives to save the innocent. All in all, a must read for hulk fans, but you do need to know planet hulk in my opinion.
This is the book that got me into comics again. I hadn't read a comic in about 15 years but I saw this at our library and the cover looked really awesome so I picked it up. The action scenes in this book are amazing and it is really fast paced. Since being blown away by this, I have read thousands more since and am glad I got back into comics. We bought the paperback and my son looked at and read it so much the binding fell apart. Now we have the digital copy, which lets you zoom in on the individual frames. This one will always be my guilty pleasure.
I've not read many graphic novels that have comics combined, but with the upcoming Ragnarok movie, I wanted to get some background going on what I hope is going to be a fabulous Thor flick. It was.. a different kind of Hulk from my childhood but that's not a bad thing, just.. different.I docked a star due to Zon shipping it with other stuff just laying in the box, a corner of the cover and first few pages got tweaked. Should have had it wrapped or in a zip lock bag or something. I didn't get that "pristine/I am the first to read this" feel from the experience.See you at the movies!
This comic was good from a story's point of view but the drawing and art rendering although beautiful was a muddled mess at time's. It was hard to understand and even interpret what I was looking at. I think it suffered from to much crammed into one plate and that was hard to read and interpret. Comic's shouldn't be this way when the creator's of these comic's is dependent of what you are seeing. I wanted so much to give it more than three 🌟 but it's just to messy.
The Incredible Hulk returns to Earth to teach his old frenemies a lesson. He systematically takes down the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe. The art is beautiful, the writing is excellent, the story is superb.
I have always been a huge Hulk fan, but haven't read comic books for years. I came across the WW Hulk series, but the price threw me off at the time. When I saw this for only $3.99, I jumped on it right away. This was an alright story with the Hulk doing what he does best. Smash! He beats up a bunch of super heroes, who had banished him into space. He is angry and he wants revenge. However, the overall story seems rushed and incomplete. If I had paid full price for this, I would have been disappointed. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the story overall and the books really come to life on the iPad. The Kindle app is great for reading comics on the iPad and has caused me to add comics back on my reading list.
