I learned about this text from a colleague who read about it. We created an entire unit with No Choirboy as our anchor text amid articles, podcasts, documentaries, etc., and it was the perfect way to end the year! My 10th graders were so engaged, especially my intensive group. They made so many connections to previous texts we've read and were astonished to learn about our penitentiary & judicial systems. I had students who said they had not read an entire book in years actually read this one cover-to-cover. The structure of the text (lack of interview questions, use of text features like italics for Kuklin's commentary, etc.) was slightly more complex than I anticipated, and provided interesting discussion because it encouraged my students to conduct more thorough close readings. I couldn't help but chuckle every time some one of my lower-level babies made comments about grammar or corrected the text when they read aloud. The content and style affords No Choirboy a place on my "must read" list, especially because students WANTED to learn, read, write & discuss after enduring a brutal testing season. I ended the school year feeling proud of how equipped & prepared my students are to intelligently & respectfully participate in such a crucial dialogue.
This is a book that brings you face to face with the reality of the legal system, the oppression of poverty, and the realities of lives gone wrong. It puts humanity into inhuman acts and force the reader to see what society does to not only the victims but the offenders. Written with the voice of the condemned the book allows readers to see where bad choices lead you and how justice may not be as justified as it looks. Good for young adults who can't see or need to see the realities of consequences from a first person perspective.
I will be using this second semester for my 9th grade English class. It is captivating and very engaging. A great look into the real lives of people that have gotten in too deep and are paying with their life.
I bought this for my 7th grade son who is not a big fan of reading. The stories are told in the words of the convicts, so the language can be intense. I strongly recommend that you read this along with your child and talk about what your child is reading. The book opened the door for us to have some really wonderful conversations.
Love this book, especially for teenagers. My students are eating it up right now in independent reading! I suggested it to one student, and then she loved it so much that she suggested it to some other students. Next thing you know they came by to see if I had any other copies to give out! I may need to buy some more!
This book is amazing. The subject matter is a surefire draw, but the execution (no pun intended) is perfection. Teens will be drawn to this because of the cover, the title, and the subject matter, and will not be disappointed. They will undoubtedly recommend it to friends, and I'm sure that no matter how many copies I buy for my high school library, I won't be able to keep up with the demand.

Susan Kuklin's disjointed book No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row is suppposed to take the reader inside the US Prison system and explore the question of capital punishment. It does none of that.While the self-told stories of some young murderers are moving, we are given no perspective on why they are where they are.The book gives the reader no insight into the morality of capital punishment or any suggestion as to an alternative.In some way we are led to believe that two of these young murderers are less frightening and less dangerous because they write poetry.Ms. Kuklin's dialogue by the siblings of William Jenkins in chapter five, lacks depth and feeling. It is pointless.Ms. Kuklin claims to be a photographer, but the photos of people and places in the book are grainy and without merit.I am unable to understand how on the dust cover Booklist can call this work "Searing and provocative..."While most of her subjects are certainly not Choirboys, Ms. Kuklin has provided no music for them to sing.

This was a lot of fun.There's a whole book of set up - Planet Hulk - but it's neatly summarized in this book. A group of heroes, tired of the Hulk's rage, shot him into space into what they thought would be a paradise world. It wasn't. After fighting for his survival there, Hulk won and has returned with an army to seek revenge.The Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the US Army throw everything at the Hulk but to no avail. One by the one the heroes of the Marvel Universe fall and a good chunk of New York is leveled as we watch the final epic battle.There are some minor problems, it's hard to believe that a genius like Reed Richards or a sorcerer with a wealth of powers like Dr Strange can't think of more ways to stop the Hulk than we see. And the ending is a bit pat, with everything restored to the status quo. But it's still a fun slug fest with a lot of emotion and heart.The only real flaw is that this is a serial book set in the Marvel Universe so in the end, everything is put (more or less) right. And somehow no one is killed or even seriously hurt. But that's the price of reading a book set in the main universe and if you're a long time comic reader like me, you might snarl at it, but you accept it as well.So yes, I recommend it.
I read this some time ago as a set of print mags. Thank god I bought them all as a set. It was an evening read I could not put down. Then a few weeks ago I was stumbling around Amazon as I am won't to do and there it was again. I'd given my print versions to a young friend who'd never heard of the series. And when I saw the series in Amazon the fire and excitement that I'd felt before rose up in me. The reading was as good and as much a rush as before. HULK SMASH! Feels good to see Hulk triumph! Unequivocally! The team did very well. And if this becomes a movie, I do hope they do it well. It deserves the full treatment as a mini series. Well done Marvel. Another gem for the treasure trove.
I would have given this five stars if not for the art. Romita does landscapes decently well, but I really dislike his human characters, particularly the faces.Once you get past the arts this is a good story, and a fine sequential the excellent planet hulk. So hulk and insufficient followers from planet hulk arrive on earth to reap revenge for the whole exile and exploding ship deal. The rest of the book is just a series of interesting fights, as each hero team and illuminati members line up to take their shot at the worldbreaker. It was interesting seeing hulk and friends wallow in their rage and almost become like the red king they fought so hard to overthrow, and even at his angriest hulk strives to save the innocent. All in all, a must read for hulk fans, but you do need to know planet hulk in my opinion.
This is the book that got me into comics again. I hadn't read a comic in about 15 years but I saw this at our library and the cover looked really awesome so I picked it up. The action scenes in this book are amazing and it is really fast paced. Since being blown away by this, I have read thousands more since and am glad I got back into comics. We bought the paperback and my son looked at and read it so much the binding fell apart. Now we have the digital copy, which lets you zoom in on the individual frames. This one will always be my guilty pleasure.
I've not read many graphic novels that have comics combined, but with the upcoming Ragnarok movie, I wanted to get some background going on what I hope is going to be a fabulous Thor flick.It was.. a different kind of Hulk from my childhood but that's not a bad thing, just.. different.I docked a star due to Zon shipping it with other stuff just laying in the box, a corner of the cover and first few pages got tweaked. Should have had it wrapped or in a zip lock bag or something. I didn't get that "pristine/I am the first to read this" feel from the experience.See you at the movies!
This comic was good from a story's point of view but the drawing and art rendering although beautiful was a muddled mess at time's. It was hard to understand and even interpret what I was looking at. I think it suffered from to much crammed into one plate and that was hard to read and interpret. Comic's shouldn't be this way when the creator's of these comic's is dependent of what you are seeing. I wanted so much to give it more than three 🌟 but it's just to messy.
The Incredible Hulk returns to Earth to teach his old frenemies a lesson. He systematically takes down the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe. The art is beautiful, the writing is excellent, the story is superb.
I have always been a huge Hulk fan, but haven't read comic books for years. I came across the WW Hulk series, but the price threw me off at the time. When I saw this for only $3.99, I jumped on it right away. This was an alright story with the Hulk doing what he does best. Smash! He beats up a bunch of super heroes, who had banished him into space. He is angry and he wants revenge. However, the overall story seems rushed and incomplete. If I had paid full price for this, I would have been disappointed. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the story overall and the books really come to life on the iPad. The Kindle app is great for reading comics on the iPad and has caused me to add comics back on my reading list.

How to Eat Fried Worms is full of all kinds of hilarious (and super gross!) antics with boys being boys! Billy thinks he can eat those 15 worms in 15 days and win $50! Will he be able to do it? The boys become very imaginative in so many ways! They team up--two on two--one side coming up with magnificent ways to prepare the worms so they're more edible: boiled or fried and topped with ketchup, mustard, horseradish, cheese, salt, pepper, etc. Even Billy's mom joins the menu fun and comes up with some very creative wormy recipes that almost sound enticing! The other team comes up with very creative ways to try to make Billy give up! From pretending they're poisonous, to gluing two worms together, to distracting Billy with a day of fun and food, to even making a worm out of cooked beans, they just don't give up! At one point Billy has to eat a worm alive and wriggling and I could almost feel that thing squirm with every chew!! Ewwww! Full of fun and silliness, fights and stress, and creative food for little boys (or little boys at heart) everywhere! And after all that drama we wonder: What do worms taste like? Some of the themes would include cheating vs honesty, gambling or making bets, friendship, and just the grossness factor of eating worms--whether raw or fried or smothered in sour cream! Classic...so I bought it for my nephew for his 10th birthday. My sister texted me about a week later, she said good news and bad news. He loved the book, in fact he loved it so much he went out and found the biggest worm he could find and ate it right in front of me! I warned him, but he did it anyway, he was sick for a whole day. He learned his lesson, but he was inspired by reading. OH GOSH, I felt horrible but couldn't stop laughing for days.
How to Eat Fried WormsWe bought the audio book which was well done. This book presented several opportunities to discuss relationship issues with my 8 year old boy. The boy in the story is prodded into doing gross things by his friends. In this story it's eating worms. It's gross, but by the end the boy grows accustomed to it and so did we, strangely enough. In the end the boys learn the lessons of prodding others to do risky things, making bets and paying their debts. How to tell real friends from those who would try to trick you or undermine you. There are lots of funny parts. The worm eating boy is sharp and even tho the other boys try to trick him he catches on to it and is able to succeed. His parents even help him as long as they know it won't harm him. At one point things go too far and his father calls the bet off even tho he only has one more worm to go. He has to defy his father to finish what he started and win the bet. The friends who help him are true friends. It's a really good story with some really good lessons, I highly recommend it.
This book came to me before the scheduled delivery date, and it came in excellent condition. I would order from this company again. This is a very funny book. My students enjoyed this book very much. After reading the book, we viewed the video. Because of the PG rating, I had students bring parent signed permission forms to me so each student could view the movie as a class. We read the book as a read-a-loud, developed an entire unit based on this book, then we viewed the movie. The book and the movie are a little different, but both are fun. As a teacher, I liked the book best, of course the students liked the movie best. You can find a lot of activities via the internet to help you plan a unit around this book. This was a fun unit to end the school year with in our reading class. We even made and ate fried worms. (Yummy) Your students will love this book, movie, and all of the activities that go along with this book on the internet.
My son really enjoyed the book and as a bonafide picky eater, I think it was pretty eye-opening for him as well. He's actually relented slightly into trying out new foods and I think he's really just bracing himself for just in case we throw in some new proteins for him to try, inspired by the book. Still a childhood favorite apparently.
Unfortunately, when my grandchild got the book for Christmas and started reading it the book stopped at page 88 and started over with page 33. We ended up getting the book on Kindle so she could finish it. She loved the book and the storyline.
This story is timeless, and pretty well matches what I remember of it after 40-odd years. Actually, I missed some of the humor the first time around, so probably got greater enjoyment of it this time around, reading it to my 6 and 8 year olds.
I forgot how funny this book was, and how much fun it was to read until I read this with my nephew. Entertaining and funny! A fun book to help a learning reader enjoy reading.

EDWARD R. DOUGHERTY, PhD, is Director of the Genomic Signal Processing Laboratory at Texas A&M University, where he holds the Robert M. Kennedy '26 Chair and is Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also co-Director of the Computational Biology Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute as well as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. Dr. Dougherty has published more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. MICHAEL L. BITTNER, PhD, is co-Director and Senior Investigator at the Computational Biology Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute. Previously, he was associate investigator in the Cancer Genetics Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bittner holds a dozen patents and has published more than 100 articles.

The book, Epistemology of the Cell, by Dougherty and Bittner, is a gem. Dougherty is a Professor at Texas A&M and has written extensively and brilliantly on the issue of using systems thinking in the growing field of genomics. Now systems thinking was, in way, started by Norbert Wiener in the 1930s, as he began to model various systems, from the dynamics of nerve fibers to the development of the first artificial arm. Yes, he did the arm, not the physician at Mass General. Wiener also developed the systems to the control the pointing of radar controlled guns on ships in WW II.What made Wiener unique was that Wiener asked "Why". The why meant finding the cause and the result and establishing the connection between the two, establishing the system. Physicists and chemists ask "why" questions, the find the cause and the causality chain. Biologists were for ages asking "what" as people who classified.Darwin broke that chain of biologists somewhat by asking "why" as regards to evolutions and he is pilloried even to this day. Physicians often ask "what" and "how" and do not really want to be bothered by the "why". It is not their jobs to find out why, just find out "what" is wrong and know "how" to fix it. Thus a physician is taught "what" to look for to diagnose prostate cancer and is also taught "how" to remove it. The physician does not know or care "why" the cancer is doing what it is doing. That is epistemological.That, in essence, is a simplification of what Dougherty and Bitter go about to explain. Their book explores the challenges set forth to those exploring the gene and the cell and entices them to think beyond just the what and how to go to the why, the explanation of the process, the system, from cause to effect. The authors have written a treatise which compares a few others which look at the epistemological basis of research, asking the correct questions, and pursuing the best path to answer them (see the work by Winograd and Flores Understanding Computers and Cognition: A New Foundation for Design as a prime example written some 25 years ago). Dougherty has with his colleagues and associate been developing the ideas contained herein for well over the past decade and I have read many of his works, they provide great insight to what should be done.Chapter 1 begins with a discussion of the definition of epistemology, on p. 2. They define scientific epistemology by what it addresses; knowledge and its truth. Then they use Kant to develop the transition from the Enlightenment to today. On p. 4 there is a brief but focusing discussion where he explains the simple Newtonian world maturing into an Einstein one and likewise a Watson and Crick paradigm of DNA/RNA/proteins into the way we understand cell dynamics today, as pathways, miRNAs, repressor enzymes and the complexity of both intracellular dynamics and intercellular dynamics. They rely extensively on a Popperian view of Science, which for those more familiar with Kuhn may tend to have some slight dissonance, but it holds together quite well.All in all, Chapter 1 sets the stage well, both from establishing the necessity to have models which answer why, and to establish the counterpoint of the thinkers who have reverted back to Aristotelian classification as the finders of what.Chapter 2 is a discussion of Aristotelian causality. p 14 states it well with the statement,"explanation must involve a causal relation...".On p 21 they state, "Galileo and Newton do not deny causality as a category of knowledge but they widen the scope of knowledge to include mathematical systems that relate phenomena, while bracketing "questions about nature" of the phenomenon...".On pp 33-34 they have an excellent discussion of Bertrand Russell's work on causality.In Chapter 4, on p 70, the authors use the work of Norbert Wiener and his associate Arturo Rosenbluth on Cybernetics Cybernetics, Second Edition: or the Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine. For it was indeed "the synergy of communications, control, and statistical mechanics..." that set the framework of how we should view cellular and organ dynamics. The authors then given examples of gene regulation. I would have simply stated that every cell and every organic system is a multidimensional distributed random process.One could take a Feynman like approach and posit the obvious, and then fill in the details. The authors work from the bottom up to demonstrate their world view. Namely that when we look at cells we are looking at complex dynamic random systems. Systems we can ascribe states to, states being measurable quantities, which in turn operate on other states in a dynamic fashion.In Chapter 5 the authors start the transition to complex state models. They again rely on the wisdom of Wiener on p 89 to state:"Wiener recognized the difficulties that the mathematical requirement of science and translational science would present for medicine ..."For back in 1948 when Wiener had published Cybernetics, Medicine was still a "what and how" practice. It did not transition to a "why" approach. The translational science that the authors speak of is:"... mathematical engineering, applied mathematics with a translational purpose.."Namely, to translate nature to measurable quantities. Quantities which we can then by knowing the "system" we can then manipulate and predict. We can observe and we can control, the end goals of translational science. In a Popperian sense, the authors address the issue of measuring, predicting, and examining what does not do what we said it would.The key arguments are developed in Chapter 9 and 10. Chapter 9 is the "sola fides" discussion, faith alone, as a mantra to those who fail to understand the system nature of the cell dynamics. The authors, on p 149, evoke William Barrett, the insightful Columbia University philosopher, who wrote The Illusion of Technique The Illusion of Technique , a superb work integrating the principles of epistemology and science in the late 1970s. Frankly, to see Barrett in a book of this type was an exciting surprise, for I had thought that Barrett was falling into obscurity, a loss to many who are struggling with issues that Barrett has thought through decades ago. The authors then on p 148 also discuss the nature of stochastic dynamic systems.Dougherty brings insight via avenues that I found resonated strongly. The discussion on Wiener, where Dougherty, unlike Gleick in what I feel is presented with uninformed bias, sees Wiener as the father figure, one combining systems thinking, clear and built upon strong mathematical foundations, which is then integrated with real biological systems. Although I find their approach insightful and compelling, I would have taken pathways in cancer dynamics as somewhat well-defined stochastic systems.For example, we know the effects of PTEN, the AKT pathway, and the MYC pathway, the p53 pathway, and the complex dynamics which are well described in the readily available NCI data base of pathways. One can use as states the concentrations of any one of these proteins and then state simply that they all interact with one another, the result being homeostasis or if a change cancer. The model is multidimensional, stochastic, highly complex, and strewn with "noise", namely uncertainties. Models have been developed and tested for such cancers as prostate, melanoma and colon. Dougherty, himself, has made substantial contributions to this area. It would have been useful perhaps to demonstrate this approach as well.On p. 163 the authors place a stake in the ground to say what would be expected for those to work in the field, that the books by Loeve Probability Theory I (v. 1) and Cramer Mathematical Methods of Statistics. (PMS-9) be used as standard bearers! As I read that in the book I looked on my bookcases and saw my old well-worn copy of Loeve, which got me through my PhD. Cramer was my core text for my introductory course, but then again it was MIT. Thus they set a high hurdle, but a necessary one for those to work in the field. My first book, Stochastic Systems and State Estimation (Wiley, 1972) Stochastic Systems and State Estimation, in a sense was one of the many which established the bar.The clear strike at the adversaries is set on p. 165. After again referring to Barrett and Kant, the authors end with:"Does anyone really believe that data mining could produce the general theory of relativity?"I think this can be extended. For example many researchers run millions of microarrays and are currently finding hundreds of SNPs or thousands of miRNAs and each time they send out a press release saying they have "discovered" some new "gene" or worse "cause" or "cure" of say prostate cancer or melanoma. In reality one does not know whether this is a marker for cancer, a marker for a predisposition for cancer or just plain noise.What the authors, and others, have argued is that it is essential to have a well-defined dynamic system model of how say PTEN and AKT interact and how they in turn control MYC and where the controls on p53 are in this chain. The microarray analyses should be done in the context of defining the linkages in the state model and not as ends in themselves. The model can then be validated. From such a model we can then see conditions on their way to cancer and conditions representing advanced cancers. For example, recent authors have announced a way to measure PTEN in prostate cancer and laud that as a diagnostic step. In reality by the time PTEN has been deactivated there is most likely a metastasis. Understanding and refining a model is the essence of the "why" articulated by the authors.On p 166 there is a superb critique of what the authors call the pre-Galilean thinkers, namely the biologists who like Linnaeus were really just classifiers of forms and shapes failing to understand why they were what they were. One must remember that biology was all too often just a study of things and a process of naming them and classifying them. The systems which made for these differences were little understood, and worse, beyond the mindset of many who practiced in the field.Chapter 9 is. in my opinion. the pinnacle of their argument. Simply put, we should now begin to perform our experiments within the context of a model. For example, we know many of the pathways of the key genes intracellular, but we do not yet understand the dynamic model that controls them. Thus, when we do microarray tests, we should be doing them to determine the constants in the model and then validate that design. We should, in effect, identify the system, using a system framework, not just some unstructured set of classifiers. We have the structures, now is the time to put them to use.Science is iterative. It is an iterative set of models and refinements. On p 171, the authors refer to Turing's last paper on tessellation, or why zebras have stripes. The paper by Turing was submitted a day or two before he committed suicide and it was done without the benefit of Watson and Crick who were simultaneously doing their work at Cambridge. He intuited intercellular flow of some yet to be defined controlling substances. The concentration of these unknown substances would rise and fall in concentration and as such the color would change.This approach has recently been applied, using a system model of flower genetics, and it explains and demonstrates the control of patterning in a genus of flowers. Having the model for this genus of flower, which is experimentally verifiable, one can then do the inverse, namely the controllability issue of creating desired flower patterns. That also is the essence in cancer dynamics, namely of creating a control or cure, but with a verifiable model. One must have the model, thus say the authors. Thus says nature! If one takes the authors systems approach and applies it to intercellular systems thinking, then it can be argued that the stem cell of cancer theory as has been recently evoked can be readily explained, as readily as those zebra stripes! That is the strength of the model posited by the authors.My only negative is the price. There are some 187 pages and the price is well above $100. Amazon does have a better price but not much. That is over $0.60 per page, and for that I would blame not just Wiley, but the IEEE, which somehow has all too inflated prices. This book is so insightful that the barrier to entry should be more modest. However, it is worth the insight at any price however.And one last nit. The work of the authors should also shine a light on macroeconomics, which suffers not from a surfeit of models and mathematics, but from any ability to validate them, just look at the current state of the economy. Thus what biology brings from data to systems, macroeconomics brings from systems to reality. Both have to merge and be able to be predictive. [For full disclosure, the reviewer is a colleague and personal friend of one of the authors.]This book is a philosophical disquisition on the Epistemology of Science, as it relates to the interface between Engineering on one hand, and Biology and Biomedicine, on the other. The book is written by two accomplished scientists: a Mathematician (Dougherty), with a long career in the Engineering, and a Biologist (Bittner). These distinct backgrounds reflect the multidisciplinary foundation of the book.The philosophical outlook of the book is that of the revolutions in Science and Engineering that occurred in the first half of the 20th century, including Einstein's Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics in Physics, as well as the views of Biologist Conrad Waddington and Engineer Norbert Wiener, both of whom advocated a Systems approach to Biology. The authors argue that this epistemology, based on a positivistic/idealistic framework, is the final, mature foundation of science, which is the outcome of a long process that began with Galileo and Newton. The authors argue that Biology will become a successful, mature science only if it adopts this same epistemological view of science. The book supports its viewpoint with many famous quotes by eminent scientists throughout the text.A brief outline of the book follows. Chapter 1 introduces the main epistemological framework of the book, stressing an idealistic view, based on mathematical modeling and prediction, as opposed to a realist view, based on "everyday" explanation. It also emphasizes the limits of Science, and its pragmatic nature. It likens the current state of Biology to that of Physics at the end of the 19th century, and argues that Biology can only make the leap to a mature science if it can resolve the same epistemological conundrums that Physics had to face in the early 20th century.Chapter 2 is a comprehensive discussion of the evolution of the concept of causality in philosophy, from its beginnings in Aristotle through its definitive (according to the authors) formulation, proposed by Hume, going through the views of Francis Bacon, Galileo, Laplace, Kant, Mill, Einstein, Russell, and Reichenbach. This is important to the book, the authors argue, as the pre-Galilean view of Science (combated in the book) had as a distinguishing feature a naïve realist view of causality.Chapter 3 focuses on the scientific method, and its evolution from its beginnings in the ancients through modern 20th century Physics. It emphasizes the role of the controlled experimentation and prediction, a breakthrough credited to the early modern scientists, such as Bacon, Galileo and Newton, and of Mathematics as the proper language of scientific knowledge. It classes the concept of "explanation" as rationalistic and as an impediment to modern science: explanation, as causality, must remain outside the arena of scientific discussion. This chapter emphasizes again that Mathematics is the proper, and the only safe, language of science. Finally, it highlights the importance of an epistemology including uncertainty (expectation) as opposed to a deterministic epistemology (based on causality).Chapter 4 discusses the abstract regulatory processes of the cell as the essence of the "secret of life," as opposed to the mere physicochemical components that implement them; in this way, biology is separate from physics and chemistry. This is a "systems" view, first proposed by Waddington, as the authors point out. From this, the authors argue that this essential component of the living cell must be modeled as a stochastic dynamic system, with the accompanying issues of synchronicity, fault tolerance, and parallelism present in physical plants. This chapter requires some mathematical sophistication from the reader in its later sections. It discusses the important notion of canalizing genes, and goes on to survey briefly the "master-slave" model, intervention in probabilistic regulatory networks, and the "intrinsic multivariate prediction" phenomenon, all studied by the authors in previous scientific papers. Finally, the material of the chapter is analyzed from the epistemological perspective outlined in earlier chapters.A definition of translational (applied) science is given in Chapter 5. Translational science is identified with synthesis, as opposed to "pure" science, which is concerned with analysis. Synthesis is then identified with the modern engineering approach of Wiener and others. A wonderful quote by Wiener (page 91) summarizes the need for truly multidisciplinary teams in translational science, a goal that is still mostly a prospect at the present time. The discussion is supplemented by an example involving the external control of Boolean regulatory networks.Chapters 6 and 7 are the most technical in the book, dealing with the concept of stochastic validation in pattern recognition (classification), and in the inference of regulatory networks, respectively. Chapter 6 also includes a discussion on the need of a stochastic approach to describe physical systems, and how this can be done using conditional expectation. It also discusses the need of modeling assumptions for validating classifiers (and indeed, in translational science in general). Chapter 7 deals with some of the same issues of validation and performance, but this time for the much more complex case of network models.Chapter 8 is a somewhat acid critique of the current subjectivist and relativistic currents observed in much of 21st century Science, using for that the particular perspective of unreliable methods for classifier error estimation. It starts by reaffirming the overall epistemological viewpoint of the book, through Hume and Kant, and then proceeds to give specific examples relating to classification error estimation, showing that there can be large variances and no correlation between estimated and true errors. In an interesting twist, the authors compare belief in these techniques to the exhortation to believers, made by early protestant leaders, to rely on faith alone (sola fides = faith alone or, more to the point, "blind faith"). This is followed by warnings on the "illusion of technique" offered by modern computer technology (this is, incidentally, in no way a luddite manifesto) and the attempts of expanding the scope of the scientific method to suit one's desires.Finally, Chapter 9 is an essay on the limited prospects of medical intervention in the absence of a systems approach, citing many examples to support this view, and thus returning to the main theme of systems biology proposed by the book.
Two of the leading figures in translational genomics and computational systems biology, Dougherty and Bittner have taken on a subject that is at the very core of modern biology. Evoking Wiener and Rosenblueth, the authors draw on their own immense experience in systems theory and engineering, molecular biology and biochemistry, to guide the reader through foundational issues that, if ignored, stand squarely in the face of progress in biology and medicine. This elegantly written book is unique in its scope while achieving the depth that the subject matter deserves. Every systems biologist ought to read this book.

Push past the man's rightly-earned bitterness and his passion for the old shoot-style that younger audiences may find a little boring, and you get an entertaining and informative glimpse into the management side of the business.Having grown up watching NWA wrestling from the '70s-'80s and comparing it to today's product, there's just no comparison. NXT's dimly-lit arenas are close, but no cigar. WWE continues to fuel my suspicions that the combined attention-span of its creative writing team is all of 15 minutes. Some of the key points Ole makes in this book:Just because a movie or TV show is fake doesn't mean you have to keep reminding your audience, and it doesn't mean that it doesn't take talent or skill - not only from the actors but also from the writers and directors.Wrestling was once so entertaining that it got real heat - so much so that heels like Ole would be physically attacked by fans. I can't imagine today's product getting a fan riled up enough to even buy a ticket to come back the following week, let alone try to stab a 300-pound wrestler!Numbers don't lie. WWE/F can brag all they want about revenue, but they didn't fill the same arenas week after week like Ole's promotions did. A weekly entertainment budget of $15 was no small amount for a blue-collar family of four during the late '70s to early '80s, so your shows had to be entertaining and the storylines long enough to keep them coming back.Thank you Ole, for the great wrestling, booking and now, this book!
Don't ask Ole. At first when I started reading I thought what a bitter person and I wasn't sure I was even going to finish. After reading over 15+ autobios from different individuals in the pro wrestling industry, it is hard to challenge what's stated in this amazing life of 1/2 of the wrecking crew. Ole is spot on and as bad as I hate to admit it, his opinions apparently are also factual. I'd highly recommend if you want it told like it is.
Either Ole Anderson was the smartest guy in wrestling, or he is the largest egotist of all time.(read prick) It's a good read, Ole was there in the 70's, 80's 90's and into the 2000's, he has literally seen it all and seems a bit bitter about it. After the fall of WCW it is pretty easy to see that the Bischoffs and Herds of the organization screwed up in huge ways, David Arquette, REALLY? I enjoyed Ole's stories and I enjoyed the inside look into the GCW and Mid-Atlantic days. Ole glories in telling others to kiss his ass, and then go on to prove they should, either way the book is enjoyable.
Listen up. No one in the world of Professional Wrestling is more knowledgeable and to the point than Ole Anderson! It is a blessing that Ole has chosen to share his insight with us! He may come off at times like an arrogant bully but If there were a lot more men in the wrestling business like Ole Anderson we would all have a far superior sport to enjoy! If you are a real fan of Professional Wrestling you must get this book!!!!!
I always enjoy reading books about the behind the scenes activity that went on in professional wrestling. Some of the other reviews seem to think that Ole Anderson is full of himself but I really feel like he tells it like it is.
Ole Anderson is the biggest fan of Ole Anderson. He will give some self criticism but that’s only for modesty reasons. The book however is very enjoyable. What should be a warning it is mostly about Ole’s career as a booker, so there is not much about his famous turn on Dusty and almost nothing about four horsemen.Ole’s views on wrestling are really old school but there is a lot of insight and it read really well.
Ole Anderson puts it right into perspective (as he always does)!!!!
While I agree with other reviewers that there should have been much more about the 4 horseman , I still feel like this was one of the better books regarding pro wrestling .Thank you Ole for telling it like it is. I relieved many memories as a child watching pro wrestling on Mid Atlantic and of course on TBS.
