David Faber's BECAUSE OF ROMEK is one of a long line of fraudulent Holocaust survivor stories, but is remarkable for implausibilities and impossibilities so profound that it would be easy to mistake the book for satire. It would be laughable if Faber wasn't using the book to poison the minds of schoolchildren at speeches he charges a hefty fee for.The book takes us from the invasion of Poland to the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The title of the book refers to Romek, Faber's older brother, who Faber claims is a former member of the Polish Army working with the Polish resistance to sabotage supplies of deuterium, heavy water used in nuclear research coming to Nazi Germany from Norway. Any history of the Second World War will tell you that this never happened, and supposedly Romek is doing this from the tightly guarded Jewish ghetto in Tarnow, a city in the extreme south of Poland. Faber relates how Romek is tortured to death by the Gestapo while he watches, after which the Gestapo disposes of the witness by driving him back to the Tarnow ghetto and forgetting about him.This is in many ways the least of the bogus fables Faber laces his book with. He claims that after an escape he was taken in by Russian partisans working in the Polish forests. While the partisans only have a few tents and fewer weapons, one of them also has a store of girls clothing, complete with a blonde wig. These are common guerilla supplies? Faber claims that the partisans used these items to dress him up as a girl so he could sabotage the railroad, reasoning that a little girl messing with the tracks would draw less suspicion(!). Faber then states that the partisans were all killed by a forest fire set by the Nazis; he escaped by breaking the barrel of his rifle against a tree and using it as a snorkel.Just try it! Take a cold rolled steel rifle barrel and try your best to break it by banging it against a tree! It's impossible! Faber then claims that out of nowhere a woman drives up in a car (private automobiles were almost unknown in Poland even before the war). The woman drives with Faber through the forest fire area without once encountering a German roadblock or patrol, even though a major anti-insurgent operation has just taken place. With nothing better to do and apparently with all the gasoline she wants, she drives Faber, a boy in smoke-stained female clothing, over 100 miles through Poland without attracting suspicion and drops him off right in front of the Tarnow ghetto with no Nazi guards in sight.The improbabilities and impossibilities continue page after page, but reach their laughable summit when Faber comes to Auschwitz, where he goes through more miraculous escapes than Indiana Jones. Two utterly ridiculous stories stand out. At one point, Faber claims he survived the gas chambers because there was no more room and he was turned away(!). He was then approached by a member of the female orchestra who introduced herself as "Fania Fenelon". When Faber was fabricating this story, he obviously didn't bother to find out that French singer Fania Goldstein, famous from the film "Playing For Time", took up the stage name "Fenelon" AFTER the war.Then, after being dumped into the Kremas by a dump truck(!), Faber escapes a second time by hiding under a pile of clothing. This always fooled Nazi guards, right? He then just drifts into the Sonderkommando without ever being detected at the twice a day roll calls, where in the tried and true cliché of Holocaust stories, he's forced to work killing his fellow Jews, to the point where he's handing canisters of gas up to Adolf Eichmann, who he claims is personally doing the gassings and who introduces himself to Faber as "Colonel" Eichmann.History records that during the mass gassings, Eichmann was at his headquarters in Budapest; he rarely visited Auschwitz. Henryk Tauber, whose testimony is at the Auschwitz State Museum, states that none of the Sonderkommando were boys (Faber being about 16 years old at this time) and that all Sonderkommando were locked up out of sight during gassings; none of them engaged in it. Finally, the SS did not use military ranks. Eichmann would never have introduced himself as a "Colonel"; his rank was Obersturmbannfuhrer. Faber seems to have researched his fraud using the least reliable histories he could find.And on and on it goes. During the evacuation march from Auschwitz in January of 1945, Faber actually escapes from the Nazis and finds himself in a farmer's barn with several other boys milking a cow. Before morning, Faber then rejoins the column, unwittingly painting himself as stupid. Later in 1945, he claims he's at Dora digging underground tunnels. As Andre Sellier details in "A History Of The Dora Camp", Dora was a camp Jews were deliberately excluded from and where, in 1945, all tunnel work had been completed.These are only selected examples; the whole book can be played as a merry game called "Find The Fraud". Faber doesn't present a scrap of evidence, save pictures of his family, the firmest possible proof you can find that he had siblings. It's endorsed by a variety of people, none of them historians, and is co-written by James D. Kitchen, whose credentials are unknown; the name is possibly a nom de plume. The book has gone through several different editions as Faber tried to change his story in a futile attempt to fit historical reality. No reputable publisher would touch this book; after first publishing it samizdat, he found a shadowy company called Granite Hills Press to publish this edition.Is there a reason to read this book? Well, once you realize it's bogus it's actually funny, and if you have a malicious streak you can get a laugh from all the gullible people who actually believe this crap. Second, as I mentioned, Faber the Fraudster actually goes to schools and churches and gives speeches about the book, twisting the minds of impressionable children right under the eyes of some very negligent teachers and parents.Outraged? You should be.
First off - I am NOT a holocaust denier at all -- I completely believe 100% that it all happened, and that horrific and inhuman acts were inflicted on millions during that time, with most dying.I've read a Lot of WW2 era books - non fiction accounts of the times, and one can easily do some simple investigating on Google and other internet resources to fact check this........ too many times while reading this book, something in the story didn't seem right to me, compared to what I had previously read and learned. While I presume that Mr. Faber did indeed suffer the loss of his family and spent some time in concentration camps - I cannot believe that this story wasn't embellished considerably to make for more exciting and interesting reading. It seems to be a collection of every sort of experience that one could possibly have had during the Holocaust, all rolled into one story.Just a few of the things that didn't seem right -- why wouldn't the German soldiers searching apartments know to look under sofas and beds? Perhaps Mr. Faber was out of the apt. at the time of his families slaughter and just wanted to put himself at the scene to make it more poignant? I can 'almost' accept this one, or at least understand it.Mr. Faber was a small 13-4 yr old, with no military training or country life skills, who yet managed to escape from Numerous homes, ghetto apts, camps and a death march - and then is able to re-enter these same places without anyone noticing his absences.He gets taken under the wing of a partisan group he stumbles upon after one of his escapes, and in a few days he is a key part of their plans to derail German trains?! He survives a forest fire by breaking a gun in half (this is Not something that would be accomplished by just one blow against a tree!) and uses it as a snorkel, as the fire passes by him - and he just happened to have heard of such a way to survive a fire? A mysterious 'Lola' conviently finds him afterwards and with no questions asked, she buys him new clothes and drives him very far back to the ghetto his family was in. Cars and fuel were in very short supply back then, making this really unlikely.The German authorities believe that he is an 18 yr old adult metalworker, when he applies for his papers as a scrawny 14 year old? His brother, Romek creates some sort of cooked vegetable paste that magically transforms his mother from a sick, wrinkly older woman into a beautiful younger woman - ummmmm, yeah?In the various camps, there are encounters with a veritable who's who of infamously evil top SS men -- Dr. Mengele sends him to the gas chambers (which he avoids BOTH times) and many others yell at, torture, or punish him. He also name drops musician Fania Fenelon (a name she adopted After the war) as one of the many who tell him they know HE is going to survive the camps. The story that seems most likely to be fabricated is the one about his second time to the gas chambers, where he just hides under some clothes. The Germans were obsessive in counting prisoners and they all had their numbers tattooed on their arms - so his easy slip into the job the Sonderkommando after being found was extremely unlikely. This was a unit of grown Jewish MEN, who were kept separate from other prisoners, fed a bit better, and performed their jobs of processing the dead from the gas chambers into the ovens - These prisoners would seldom last 3 mo. before being killed off and replaced with a new squad. Of course, he just walks away easily from that squad after briefly pretending to belong. He was also very unlikely to meet Eichmann - who didn't personally visit the camp often. He was in charge of making the transports work as smoothly as possible - office work largely, and wouldn't have been the person administering the ZyklonB, handed to him from a prisoner's hands - Mr. Faber's hands. That job belonged to the SS and an SS Doctor. Lastly, after liberation - Mr. Faber is so weak he can barely crawl a few feet. Red Cross nurses pick him up in their car and he goes to the hospital. Because hospital staff are only feeding him small amounts (large amounts fed to the newly freed prisoners Killed many of them inadvertently) - he breaks out of the hospital in this very weakened state, grabs clothes and a gun and walks to a nearby house and steals food and gold from a German family, then returns to the hospital with his loot!?!If you want compelling reading that is an accurate account of life in camps - there are plenty of reputable sources out there. I highly recommend If This is a Man by Primo Levi as a start point.I can understand how anyone with minimal knowledge of the details of the Holocaust would get taken in by this account of Mr. Faber's. As I said, he may have suffered horribly in his own experiences, but he does a disservice to himself and his family to have embellished this story. Embellishing this story makes things easier for the Holocaust deniers, because they can point to the inaccuracies and just then dismiss the Holocaust as false. Readers should know that there are Many editions of this book out there - all with changes made to make the story fit into history better after inaccuracies were noted. One could certainly understand being unable to recall a specific date, but there is just too much wrong here to wholly believe this tale.

Honestly, this has been more helpful to me in bridging my memory gaps(if I learned the info in the first place) while my young science whiz tries to quiz me about everything he's learning.While the entries are shorter than other Basher books(pic & info has to fit on 1 page instead of 2 for most of the elements), they are no less engaging.The book is divided by types of elements, so if you're wanting to gonin numerical order you'll be jumping around quite a bit, but the chapters really make sure all the families stay together and in true Basher style puts the focus more on understanding the element and what is does or can do than just memorizing the name and number.Bonus, the poster is awesome!
My six year old son loves science and asking questions and wanted to know why some combinations of chemicals cause explosions and others do not. When he was four we bought a standard laminated periodic table and mentioned to him many of the more well known elements, but he wanted to know more by the time he reached six. After seeing good reviews for this book, we thought we would take a look at it, and ordered it.The book came just fine and then we opened it. Things started out well with an outline of the periodic table and the first element Hydrogen, but then they decided to mention the elements according to their electron state and reactivity. So instead of moving to Helium next, they decided to list the alkali metals next (like lithium, sodium, potassium). That is all fine and good for a chemist (chemists and chemical engineers tend to group elements by free electrons or reactivity) but for a small child (that this book is aimed at), they begin to wonder what is the pattern, which means that the parent then needs to explain about outer electron shells and reactivity. The language level of the book is also fairly high and I would guess it is about the fifth to seventh grade level. Once again totally bypassing most five through ten year olds who might want to read the book on their own without the help of a parent. My small son who loves big words and a challenge decided to dive in but the book could certainly convey the same information but lower the language level so that more children could enjoy the book.Overall, because of those minor headaches, I am giving the book three stars. It is certainly filled with good information but any inquisitive child below middle school age will quite likely need the help of an educated parent or a local chemistry teacher or professor to make the most of the book. It is by no means a bad book but it could certainly use some polishing to appeal to its main audience, elementary school kids.
I just had to write a review, This book really surprised me! Bought it over a year ago and my 8 year old still loves it today. He refers back to it regularly. I definitely did not have high hopes for this book. How do you make a table of elements interesting for a child? I would have told you†you dont.†Even after looking through it i still wasn’t convincing, but my son loved it. He put the poster that comes with it on his wall and he looks at it all the time. My son says he loves how they make different little characters to represent each type of element and they describe the element’s characteristics like they are personality traits. I will take a photo of a page so you understand what im talking about. i must say my son is the type of kid that likes science and stuff like that so i dont know That every kid would like this, but if you have a little future scientist in your home i recommend this book for sure! I think the age range is about 6-12, give or take

My son saw this book in school and said he liked it and wanted his own copy. As a scientist, I had to investigate. I utilized the 'look inside' feature and found I couldn't turn away! I kept looking and the pages kept turning. I bought the book and both my son and daughter have really enjoyed it. They've even made a game of choosing an element number and the one you choose will describe who you are. I'm very pleased with the purchase. It's a great introduction to the periodic table, to the elements and how they're used in your everyday world. For reference, my son is 12 and my daughter is 10.
I purchased this book for my grandchild who is intensely interested in the periodic table. He absolutely loves the book. It is simple enough for him to read, yet contains information he doesn't already know. I think this series of books will become our go-to science books for now.

This is a great book. My 9 year old likes to carry it around and read about the different elements - it is a creative way to introduce the elements to a kid in a fun and memorable way. Do not pass go, do not collect some other lame self-help book, buy this one RIGHT NOW. Allow me to explain why.Experts who study the brain know that 95 to 99 percent of our feelings and behaviors are controlled automatically by habits that were haphazardly programed, by various sources, from birth, into our subconscious minds. Think about that for a minute and really let it sink in, because it may be the most profound thing you will ever hear.Bombshell number two: our conscious minds have no direct access to these subconscious programs. So we can't (ordinarily) change them, we don't know when they are influencing us, and we don't even know what they are. This ability to auto-program and auto playback feelings and behaviors without conscious thought is essential to our daily existence. However, some of our programs can be counter-productive and even harmful.Of course free will allows us to make free choices any time we want. But the salient question here is not "can we make free choices", but rather, "how often do we actually do it?" You can lie to yourself all you want, but the answer is one to five percent of the time. The other 95 to 99 percent of the time we are on autopilot, habitually acting out our programs, for better or worse. And the more optimistic five percent only pertains to exceptionally self-aware individuals!Occasionally we take notice of the results of our programs, wondering why we sometimes feel or act in ways that are completely irrational, immature, counterproductive, or destructive. We may even resolve to "change ourselves", no matter what it takes. But it is critical to understand that "free will" and "positive thinking" have no lasting influence on subconscious programs.This explains the extreme difficulty in making real changes to our character using (other) self-help methods--even when, on a conscious level, we perfectly understand the principles described. We are simply powerless to change our subconscious programming directly with the conscious mind, no matter how much time, effort, or "free will" we exert.If this all sounds somewhat disconcerting to you, it should! Fortunately, we have this excellent book! It shows you exactly how to indirectly access your subcsoncious mind and reprogram it in ways that work to enhance your life, instead of sabotaging it.And believe you me, it works! I was skeptical at first. Then I was completely blown away to see results manifesting naturally and effortlessly, just from following a couple of the simple exercises in the book, once or twice a day, for a few weeks. I have never experienced such a dramatic and profound change in my character from any other self help method, no matter how much time or effort I invested. It is hard to find the right words to describe the experience... It is somewhat uncanny, to be honest, to notice yourself automatically acting and feeling differently. It's something you have to experience yourself. It's like you have been hypnotized. No--you actually have been hypnotized. The author understandably avoids that word because of some unfortunate negative associations, but that is part of what you are actually doing in this book-- learning how to hypnotize yourself. I wouldn't have believed it could work, or at least work so dramatically, if I hadn't tried it myself.And it gets better: as the author explains, reprogramming your subconscious does not require a "puritan work effort"--in fact that would work against you. All you need to make profound and lasting changes is minimal effort, repetition, and a little knowledge about how your mind really works.Even if you have no desire to change anything about yourself, this book is a fascinating read. It provides fundamental insights into the workings of the human mind that most people will live and die without knowing. That is truly a shame.The author makes a very important point that I agree with completely: the value of the information presented is grossly out proportion to the cost of the book. In other words, considering the results you can get, with minimal effort, it is a steal. In my opinion, passing this book up when you have any interest at all in changing yourself, would be a grave mistake. You would miss out on one of those rare opportunities in life to get something incredibly valuable for virtually nothing.The only two gripes I have about the book are minor. First, the whole "genie" metaphor, while apt I suppose, is a little cheesy for my tastes. Second, the audio files you can download (for a small fee) from the website were recorded by the author himself (I believe), who has an accent which is distracting (to me.) I ended up recording the scripts in my own voice on my phone instead, and set them to repeat mode (you should do this too!) The text for all of them is included in the book, so you don't need to download anything or pay for anything extra.Buy this book, read it completely, and follow a couple of the exercises consistently every day for a month--and see what happens. You're welcome.
I own this book in paperback. You can read my review of the book in that section. (I don't know the author and have not spoken with him) This is one of the true treasures in this genre. Years ago,after buying the paperback, I sent for the CD that teaches the hypnosis routines that go with the book. I've worn out two CD's already. They get that much use. NOW I find the book available for my Kindle fire AND the CD hypnosis routines available as Amazon MP3 downloads. I am delighted with this turn of events. Now I can have the book and CD with me without carrying around the paperback and a CD player. NICE! I have read and reread the book and go back to it often. It's great to have it in such a portable format. I've checked the Kindle version to see if it's OK now (given all the previous complaints). It is fine. The audio MP3's are fine. I recommend the whole package together. They're fine separately, but you'll want both. I keep the book too, because I have the odd habit of writing pencil notes in my books. Still, the Kindle version is wonderful. Glad the Kindle version got straightened out. Nice Job!
Reading is great, interesting knowledge given in the book which I agree with partially on some fronts, but can understand this was written to take the "Whohoo" out of it and leave it strictly under the scientific versions of opinions/descriptions of things. However the practices he gives - just do it. You will never know until you do, and keep doing it even when you aren't in the mood, don't feel it, or whatever the excuse is, just do it. Nothing is instant, nothing is guaranteed, but persistence and perseverance is all that is required. He gives a lot of solid truths and things one should know in this book and I am grateful for the knowledge gained though reading it.
Harry has taken the mystery and intrigue out of dealing with my subconscious mind and opened doors to me that have remained locked for years. Over 20 years ago I started reading scores of books and had personal first hand experience with the subconscious mind in the medical field. I received an early bone marrow transplant and the research facility I was in was exploring this field for pain management, fear management and healing at various levels. We were taught to actually affect the function and efficiency of our T-cells and bone marrow, minimize pain during various procedures and deal with the fears of cancer and experimental treatments and living daily with death. However, even with all that training and experience there were areas that were still in the dark. Harry has shed light on those areas and I am now developing a personal, loving and fun relationship with my subconscious mind! His book is down to earth, simple to understand and laced with wit and charm. In no time I felt as if Harry were an old trusted friend. As a minister, I especially appreciated the final added chapter on prayer. Wow. Subconscious mind explained very simply. Sample scripts at end of each chapter to assist in learning to program your subconscious mind, which he compares to a Genie ready to grant your every wish once you understand how it works. This is the kind of book to be studied, even though it is a quick read. I've highlighted and underlined and have starred sections throughout. Some really great information on here, presented in an easy to understand way. I highly recommend this book.

I have been a big Greg Iles fan from the beginning of his career but unfortunately this will be my last book of his I purchase. Like many of my favorite authors the practice of adding politics to their stories is a giant turn off for me so I will simply return this book and get my money back. I work way tooo hard for what little money I make to spend it supporting the liberal agenda. Sorry Greg and toodaloo to you!!
Once again I paid good money for a book by an author that i liked only to read this idiotic anti Trump garbage. Iles isnt even consistent in this. The Dad in his book is Anti Trump who is later described as a Trump supporter with a brick and a mask. Hey Greg you are confused. That is Antifa. Just like with Winslow and his book The Border I will be getting my money back as i am not going to pay good money for this dreck.
When Nascar drivers are interviewed after a race and take a big drink of Coca-Cola on camera, they receive $10,000. Most donate it to their charity, but still it's distracting. The same is true in Greg Illes new book. My favorite author must have received a new Ford Flex, or a few dollars per mention. I'm almost halfway through Cemetery Road and not sure I can finish. He sometimes refers to his Flex 2 or 3 times on one page. "He turned and walked to his Flex" "He placed his briefcase on the back seat of his Flex." Okay..I get it. You have a Ford vehicle.
