Bought this book for my grandchildren as they love to read anything written by R.A. Montgomery.

both my 9 and 7 year old kids love to read and reread this book

I bought this book because I like the creative idea of allowing children to choose their own ending. That being said, the story is not very interesting or engaging. I found it to be on the boring side. It wasn't very adventurous.

I just started reading my kids these CYOA Junior books. (I read the old version of this, not the new Chooseco, if there is any difference). Having read scores of these books, I can say, hands down, this is the WORST one I ever read. The main problem with this book is that you have to supply your own mystery. We are bringing our friend to this magical owl tree which we have previously discovered, but the book gives almost no backstory about this owl tree, and our previous experiences here are absolutely no help to us.The choices are terrible (before I could read the choices, my six-year old provided her own choice "Ask the other owl a question" which was the logical choice since the saw-whet owl was bee-essing us, but that was not an option. We could either ask the saw-whet owl a different question, or re-ask the same question. And the questions we ask in the story (total: two) are provided for us and are terrible questions, and the book tells us they are terrible questions, because we make our own future. Now, that's all well and good, but you FORCED us to ask these dumb questions! It is very sloppy, totally boring -- in the best ending (I guess) you get a ticket to the magical kingdom, and that is the end. (You have to make up your own magical kingdom.) Honestly, this books reads like a preview to get you to want to buy a different book. Also, I was annoyed when we are climbing a magical wall that keep growing, so we can't reach the top. If you pick "Keep climbing" you are magically on the ground again, and either fly or jump to the top of the wall... it really doesn't make sense. We still love CYOA books, but this one was NOT good AT ALL. It makes Tattoo of Death look like a masterpiece. And that is still grading on a curve, acknowledging that the Junior CYOA are necessarily much simpler. I would recommend "You Are Invisible" or "The Evil Wizard" (the previous two we read) which were HEAD & SHOULDERS above this entry.

I am the survivor of 21 years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to love me and care for me, my own father. Tears are streaming down my face as I finished, 2 am on a Friday night, K.L.’s book. I started it at 10 pm- yes, I read the whole thing in 4 hours. It’s riveting. So many things make sense. What she went through I fear is so very much worse than what I did, but so many things make sense. EXCEPT OUR DAMN JUSTICE SYSTEM! Wake up, social services! Wake up, advocates! To me, this book is a call to arms. More victims MUST stand up and become survivors. So these men can’t practice their evil for 40+ years!!!!! God help America and God have mercy on the evils that earthly fathers do. And shed light on the evils.

I picked out this book randomly a few days ago when I was bored and just wanted to ready something. At first all I expected from this book was a good and interesting story, but when I continued reading, I found it to be SO much more then that. I was deeply touched by the bravery and strength of the girl, and I actually cried several times when some of the moments really hit me. After reading this book, I finally have an idea of what is it that a lot of people are going through, and I can finally understand how hard and scary it must be for people to open up and seek help when they are being abused, sexually harassed, or something even more horrible. Before even though I've been to a lot of assemblies where people come in and talk about how most victims in these kind of situations didn't have a choice when they first started (the assemblies were most about human trafficking, although this isn't what's been discussed in the book, it somehow reminded me of this), there had always been a part of my mind that thought maybe if they really wanted to get out of it in the first place, they could have a choice. And back then, I never realized there could actually be people around me who might be going through this right now. Looking back at it now, I just realized how arrogant I was before. This book has taught me a lot, and I believe it could inspire a lot of people who are experiencing similar situations in their lives right now. And maybe the strength of the character could also give them the same courage to stand up and seek help.

This book isn't a literary work of art, BUT, it is an easy and empowering read. The biggest hurdle is reading the painfully detailed descriptions of the abuse. Once you can see beyond that and enter the strength of the author- this book invites you to experience the world of misery so many people have experienced that you may never have been able to imagine. It opens your mind to why people are so intricate and individual. This book reminded me that we are all a product of our experiences and no one ever fully knows what we ourselves have experienced. This book may teach you to be more apathetic and empathetic to others or it may remind you to forgive yourself.

I love a good "based on a true story", and appreciate the author telling her story, as hard as it may have been. I could tell she's a novice author, but for being such, she did a phenomenal job! It started a bit slow, but after finishing the book I appreciated she did so; she didn't throw in your face the plot. To have the guts, the spunk, and the valor to face such evil, gives me hope for many others. Finally, I love the last chapter; it helped me and explained a lot to me. Thank you for sharing your story!

Brooke spends her life trying to protect her younger siblings from their father's explosive anger, but she pays a special price. With sensitivity we are walked through the life of Brooke and her family that reaches a crisis point when Brooke decides to reveal her family's secrets. A well written book that rings true.

This book is OUTSTANDING!!! It is amazingly well written and has your attention till the last word. I picked this book randomly based on the reviews I cannot recommend it highly enough to others. What an amazing story and a great read. Thank you for sharing such a difficult time in your life

I'm not an avid reader and wanted something to read on the treadmill. So much for the workout. I couldn't stop reading this well written first hand account of the horrors that took place in this family. We need to all be aware and look for signs of abuse in those we meet and not stand on the sideline. Get involved, ask questions and be that bubble for those in need. The world needs more Gina's and Midge's.

Didn't know what this book was about when it popped up in my kindle suggestions. I downloaded the book only because it was a true story, which I'm a sucker for. I started reading it during some down time at work and couldn't wait to get home to finish it. Well written and held my attention. There were a few times where I wanted to stop reading when the subject matter touched too close to home, but it helped me deal with some past demons by forcing myself to continue. Touchy subject, but one that needs to be talked about.

This book references material in the programming and question sections that it does not cover itself. It is poorly formatted on Kindle. Typos in this kind of reference should also be removed as much as possible. At the end of the first chapter, for example, the programming tasks require us to build programs that accept user input, but the author never bothers to cover this (it's not hard, but it is a bad practice to do this sort of thing in study books). The very first quiz question has both a typo (int.parse() really, really needs to be int.Parse()) and a reference to material not mentioned in the chapter. A book this poorly edited and formatted shouldn't even be on the market, especially considering its price. Lame!I've kept on moving through this book, and it only goes downhill from chapter 1. The authors (and editors) don't seem to have a firm grasp of the English language, and it's very common for the quiz questions to reference material not represented in the book, which in my opinion is unacceptable.

For reference, I got my MCSD .NET for C# 15 years ago and was just looking for a decent book as exam prep before refreshing my web development certifications. This book probably does a good job covering the topics in the 70-483 exam, and there really isn’t a good alternative aside from the official Microsoft Exam Ref from 2013 (that is hard to find or over-priced). I’m not sure how much post-2013 content this book really contained versus the Exam Ref, but probably not enough to justify purchasing it. This book would be an absolutely horrible way to try and learn anything new from, but is probably fine as an offline study guide (which is all it claims to be). However, the one thing this book truly excels at teaches you is how to communicate with your H1B co-workers. This book is just riddled with terrible English, as if it was just an extract of MSDN translated from Pakistani to Chinese and then to English. Fortunately, this book is mostly just fluff with longwinded code samples instead of written explanations disguised as word jumbles. I didn’t typically read the code examples, but I’m sure they compiled. One of the chapter’s Practice Exam Questions had little “//ans” comments next to the correct answer. The description about Func<> and it’s 17 overloads stated the “last parameter was the return type” and then later stated the “first parameter was the return type”. Good enough for production, I suppose…The section about “Salt Hashing” was an absolute joke. Long poorly-written English story short, they basically said “since the user is entering the same raw password every time, a hacker could intercept it over the communication channel, so slap a random GUID on it and you’re good to go.” I completely understand the purpose of salting passwords before hashing them, but this just tickled my nerdy funny bone tremendously.Ultimately, I’ll go ahead and recommend this book. The author’s dedications and bios imply that these are well-dressed, but very malnourished guys just trying to feed their huge extended families. I’m sure the technical and grammatical errors will get corrected in future editions, and it’s good to get accustomed to beta testing offshore development of any kind.

I have read 2 books from Apress before and assumed this one would be a quality read too. The book is riddled with grammatical errors and often lacking explanations. At best, it is a quick reminder of the topics you need to study. You will likely need to find in-depth information on your own.

I expected that the book would be better.

Great book for prepare for exam.I like it. It's have short explanation and code samples, its great for refresh your C# knowledge.

This book is terrible. It is riddled with typos that make what is being communicated very confusing. The author appears to have a poor concept of the English language. There are comments still left in the practice questions showing the answers. The practice questions at the end have wrong answers. It is of such low quality I can't believe that they published it in this state.

I baught the book to check if I have knowledge in the topics required for the exam. It's the worst tech book I've ever read. There are so many technical errors in it. The examples are described badly. There are a lot (really a lot!) of grammatical errors which are noticed by non-native speakers like me. I stopped submitting errors to Apress after chapter 2 (and more than 20 submitted errors?!).

I must say that it is one of the best books with practical examples and code challenges. It covers all of the topicsincluded in Exam 70-483 Official Objectives. It helped me to pass Exam 70-483 yesterday and I came all the way backto recommend this book to everyone out there who is intrested to pass the exam.

I read Jan Swafford's monumental 1997 biography of Johannes Brahms (1833 --1897) after reading his biography of the American composer Charles Ives and after reading the 1991 biography of Brahms by Malcolm MacDonald. Swafford has written an outstanding biography of Brahms and a through, perceptive consideration of his music. But greater than either of these accomplishments, his book brings Brahms and late ninetheenth century Vienna to life. Swafford has given a great deal of thought to Brahms, and his book helped me think about the nature of creative gifts, about the relationship between love and calling, and about many matters that are much broader than either biography or music.Swafford gives a great deal of attention to two formative experiences of young Brahms: 1. his childhood of poverty in Hamburg where he played as a pre-adolescent in dives frequented by prostitutes and sailors (this account has been questioned by some writers) and 2. Robert Schumann's article about Brahms at the age of 20, heralding the young man as the heir to Beethoven and predicting a brilliant future for him.Swafford's book emphasizes Brahms's difficulties throghout life in forming a lasting, sexual relationship with a woman other than prostitutes. Brahms exhibited to sort of behavior towards women frequently described in terms of "The Virgin and the Whore." Brahms could only be physically intimate with women he did not respect. Thus, Brahms ultimately rejected the romantic opportunities that came his way in the persons of Clara Schumann and Agathe von Siebold, among other women. He withdrew into a protective shell when friendships with women threatened to become romantic. Yet women were the greatest source of inspiration to Brahms as a composer. He poured into his music what he denied himself as a man. A crusty figure, Brahms was difficult to know intimately, particularly by women. The article by Robert Schumann made Brahms famous from the age of twenty before he had done much. Great things were expected of Brahms, but Schumann's praise burdened the fledgling composer with the fear that he would disappoint Schumann's hopes in him. Brahms worked slowly and became an astonishing musical craftsman; but he felt he had to justify Schumann's confidence as well as meet the standards of the great composers of the past, especially Beethoven. There is a wealth of discussion in this book of Brahms' relationships with both Clara and Robert Schumann, their daughter Julie, the violinist Joachim, the critic Hanslick, Liszt, Wagner, Bruckner, Mahler, and many others. The book is set in the last years of liberal Vienna, and Swafford poignantly draws the relationship between Brahms's music and the rise of irrationality, anti-semitism, and violence that would soon plague the Twentieth Century.I found Swafford's discussions of Brahms music highly insightful. It is less detailed, perhaps, than Malcolm MacMacDonald's study which discusses virtually every work of Brahms; but there is ample material here to form a basis for an exploration and appreciation of Brahms's music. Brahms' romanticism and his musical formalism and learning are well-explored and tied in with a consideration of his major works. Swafford's most thorough musical discussions are of the four symphonies, and he tends to move quicker over Brahms's songs. (This was also the case in Swafford's book on Ives.)I felt I got to know Brahms, in spite of himself, in this book. Brahms devoted himself wholeheartedly to his art, and in the process lost a great deal of the value of human love and human sexual closeness. It was and remains a difficult exchange. More than encouraging the reader to get to know and love Brahms's music, Swafford's biography will help the reader think about and try to compassionately understand people.

Comprehensive, insightful, thorough: this biography blew my mind. In college, I read every biography of Brahms in the library and still never learned-- or appreciated-- what drove Brahms the man or the composer. I knew he came from a squalid background (Schumann is said to have remarked on it; Swafford doesn't include the quote) but I had no idea just how poor to the point of child abuse the Brahms family was. Nor did I know his political views or his associations, other than with Josef Joachim and of course the Schumanns. I took off one star for some trivial flaws: in various places the German was not translated or translated more than once or after appearing for the first time in the text; the Red Hedgehog is called in different spots Zum der roten Igel and also Rote Igel. The index would be more useful if Brahms' works had in addition to key and opus number a separate cross-listing by the common name. For example, Symphony #1 is listed as the symphony in C minor (No. 1), Op. 68, instead of Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 (how my CD and LP show the title). In fact, a separate opus index of Brahms' published works would be eminently useful (hint for next edition). Another gripe is the discussion of the 2nd Symphony. Yes, each movement is an inversion of the main theme, but the main theme itself is a variation of Brahms' famous Wiegenlied. In fact, when I was in college music groups, musicians called Brahms' 2nd the lullabye symphony. How does that not get discussed? In summation, I was very moved by the book; I am still thinking about it and the life of Brahms, and of course his music. I am glad I bought it. I recommend it despite the mostly small flaws. I will be referring to it again and again; I'll figure out how to use the index to my advantage. Our symphony will be doing Brahms' First Symphony during this season and I'll be right there, listening to a most beloved piece.

From the Inside Flap

Joseph B. Soloveitchik, the rabbi known as "The Rav" by his followers worldwide, was a leading authority on the meaning of Jewish law and prominent force in building bridges between traditional Orthodox Judaism and the modern world. In THE LONELY MAN OF FAITH, a soaring, eloquent essay first published in "Tradition magazine in 1965, Soloveitchik investigates the essential loneliness of the person of faith in our narcissistic, materially oriented, utilitarian society. In this modern classic, Soloveitchik uses the story of Adam and Eve as a springboard, interweaving insights from such important Western philosophers as Kierkegaard and Kant with innovative readings of Genesis to provide guidance for the faithful in today's world. He explains prayer as "the harbinger of moral reformation," and discusses with empathy and understanding the despair and exasperation of individuals who seek personal redemption through direct knowledge of a God who seems remote and unapproachable. He shows that while the faithful may become members of a religious community, their true home is "the abode of loneliness." In a moving personal testimony, Soloveitchik demonstrates a deep-seated commitment, intellectual courage, and integrity that people of all religions will respond to.

Rabbi Soloveitchik, known as the Rav, presents interesting ideas concerning the dual nature of humans and the status of this nature in modernity. That status, says the Rav, is bleak because the practical self, recognized and valued in today’s world, is alienated from its spiritual self with little apparent utility.Where the Rav does best is a reinterpretation of Genesis chapters 1 and 2. Their different order of creation separated by barely a page stymies the modern fact-checker like me. But the Rav’s view is richer. Ignoring details of creation sequence, he claims they’re both true. Referencing biblical text, the Adam of chapter 1 gets his marching orders to “harness and dominate the elemental natural forces and put them at his disposal,” writes Soloveitchik. Seeking how things work, Adam 1 strives “to vanquish disease, conquer space, forge political structures…” Adam 1 is victor over nature. (Recall, ancient Hebrews lived in a desert that will kill the unprepared. No wonder nature was a hostile). But Adam of chapter 2 is instead overpowered to the point of unconscious, when he must sacrifice a part of his own body for something greater than himself and his achievements—Eve—the answer to his loneliness. Something Adam 1 is too busy to consider. Adam 2 asks not how the universe is the way it is, but why? Adam 2 “is aware of an endless past which rolled on without him,” writes the Rav. “He is aware also of an endless future which will rush on with no less force long after he will cease to exist. The link between the ‘before’ in which he was not involved and the ‘after’ from which he will be excluded is the present moment, which vanishes before it is experienced. In fact, the whole accidental character of his being is tied up with this frightening time-consciousness.” Beautiful. And so nice to know I’m not the only one seized by this realization. For the Rav, this was the intension of God, to create this seemingly impossible gap, forcing humans to manage a way to live in both worlds. With a secular view, aware of how the Bible was collated, I wonder, did the ancients intend just what Soloveitchik claims? To enunciate our competing nature in the very first two pages? His argument is so convincing, I’m inclined to think so.This book raised another question as I read it. Was the Levantine’s full departure from nature religions—elements of them still part of surrounding cultures at the time—what created the seemingly impossible gap? Not the disconnect between Adam 1 and 2, but that 2 no longer had concrete access with a spiritual world as 1 had with his practical materialism. Once God was exiled from nature, God was no longer directly reachable in the outer world by Adam 2, but rather through the abstract inner world of prayer. By Louis Dumont’s "Essays on Individualism" this inward turn was part and parcel of all Axial Age movements, including Judaism.Soloveitchik’s book left me with remarkable impressions: other ways to view human nature, our modern conundrum, and writings of the ancients.

Lonely Man of Faith sets out contrasts between those disparate creation accounts of Adam, from Genesis opening chapters. The author describes the differences between Adam I, created male and female, given dominion as a form of majesty or gravitas, and the second account, Adam II, created alone, brought to name the animals. The second creation account finds Adam II 'alone', not as an indictment addressed to Adam, but as a contextual observation of God about Adam. As the author expresses, that statement "it is not good for the man to be alone" may be better served from the Hebrew original as "being lonely."His analysis, a good seven chapters deals with plausible reasoning about the social and psychological status of Adam I and Adam II, explaining how the first Adam pursues the goal of meeting his needs, to structure his communities for his best interests and productivity. Adam II however, is invested by his creator with the need to interact in the covenantal Prophetic/Prayer community with the creator. Only in the second community is the association with Eve extended to the level of relationship, it entails awareness of and interaction with the participation of the third person, as with the participation of God.Through many footnotes sourcing Talmudic discussion of Hebrew commentary, this treatise presents a bird's eye view of Judaistic eschatology from the stand point of it's Orthodox Jewish author. Rav Soloveitchik argues that the narrative titles of God, called Elohim for the "majestic" Adam, versus being called YAWEH for the "covenantal" (man of faith) Adam, are illustrative (metaphorical names) of different aspects of God encountered by each. The one observes God through the mechanism of the cosmos, in his surrounding environment (Elohim), while the title "YAWEH" identifies a symbolism perpetuated down through the patriarchs, of God who calls covenantal Adam to draw near, of God who presents Eve in relationship with Adam and with himself, as co-equal in covenant rather than merely as co-worker.Within the covenantal community, Adam and Eve participate in an existential experience of being together, not merely working together. The change from a technical-utilitarian relationship to a covenantal-existential one occurs (in the Rav's view) "...when God joins the community...Deus absconditus emerges suddenly as Deus revelatus... (while) homo absconditus sheds his mask...(now) homo revelatus."One demonstrative illustration is the Rabbi's observation of how the Biblical text doesn't provide us any interpersonal intercourse/discourse between in-depth personalities of Eve and Adam. "Ontologically, they do not belong to each other; each is provided with an 'I' awareness and knows nothing of a 'We' awareness...the communication lines are open between two surface personalities engaged in work, dedicated to success, and speaking in cliche's and stereotypes, and not between two souls bound together in an indissoluble relation..."The other base to cover is the significance of the stories to an understanding of covenantal theology. Any covenant assumes distinctive definitions and terms of equality between the contractual partners. This understanding often finds a void space among teachers and students of the Bible. The non-Talmud student (like me) may be approaching the literature irrespective to the parties it's addressed to. (i.e. the Levites to whom the Leviticus is addressed to.) As a Christian I'm persuaded that the ignorance of covenantal theology plays a role in substantial misappropriations of Jewish scriptures.Rav Soloveitchik, I believe handles this topic with his best velvet gloves. While his treatise is addressed principally to the Jewish community, it is laced intermittently with precise Latin terms coined by the Christian theology community. In that respect, he also speaks to the theologically alert Christian who may be interested to understand the different goals of Jewish eschatology, including it's own ecumenical aspects. To put this into a perspective potentially accessible to my fellow Christians, there's a proverb near my door where a stray glance cannot easily escape."He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be an abomination." (Proverbs 28:5, ASV)It is incumbent upon a hearer to recognize, or pay attention to whom the directive is applicable; namely to whom are the terms of the covenant applicable? Also, what are the roles of the participants which the covenant defines? Preaching becomes quite strange, when assuming the assertion from the Christian epistles, that all those things which were written were given for 'our' edification, for 'our' instruction, where the preacher fails to acknowledge the covenant provisions/restrictions actually belong to Judaism. For example:[Only] "The covenant draws God into the society of men of faith."[As]-- the leader of the community-- the teacher of his pupils-- the shepherd of the flock."The prime purpose of revelation in the opinion of the Halakhah is related to the giving of the Law.""The prophetic pilgrimage to God pursues a practical goal in whose realization the whole covenantal community shares." [...] "which is mainly a community of action."Because Judaism doesn't have a Hell connected to the concept of "salvation", redemption isn't reduced to a Great Escape. It's more of a progression down the path of repentance, "Teshuva", as it's called. "Cathartic redemptiveness--when objectified--expresses itself in the feeling of axiological security [i.e. being anchored in halachic life.] attained through man's exercise of control over himself." "[Which]...is experienced in the privacy of one's in-depth personality, [and] cuts below the relationship between the 'I' and the 'thou'."Abraham's story introduces the basics of covenantal community. "Both parties entering a covenantal relationship possess inalienable rights which may only be surrendered by mutual consent. The paradoxical experience of freedom, reciprocity, and 'equality' in one's personal confrontation with God is basic for the understanding of the covenantal faith community."Without any epic myth of the fall into sin, his Orthodox comment on Tanakh originality has this to say: "The Biblical account of the original sin is the story of man of faith who realizes suddenly that faith can be utilized for the acquisition of majesty and glory and who instead of fostering a covenantal community, prefers to organize a political utilitarian community exploiting the sincerity and unqualified commitment of the crowd for non covenantal, worldly purposes." "The history of organized religion is replete with instances of desecration of the covenant."

The Bible uses thought patterns which modern man struggles with, but the Rabbi quite clearly expounds concepts which reconcile biblical truth with experience. The man of faith is very lonely in this world, but he/she always has been. The struggle which is not only internal with Majestic man ebbs and flows in intensity, but never lets up. One of the great aspects of the Rabbis exposition is that he makes it clear that Majestic Man and Covenantal Man are all ordained by God - hence what we do in the world is valuable from an eternal perspective, if it is done in faith - in relationship with God. But even if not done by faith, but only to satisfy the Majestic Man's ego, God has still given Man the task to conquer, discover, steward and protect the world and therefore His purposes will be achieved.

It is obvious, from even a cursory reading of this book, that Rabbi Soloveitchik has taken a page out of Kierkegaard, and in particular Kierkegaard's magnificent work "The Sickness Unto Death." Soloveitchik's contribution is to make the great Christian existentialist's thought accessible to those raised with a Jewish theological framework, and in that sense he provides a service to the history of Jewish thought. His discussion about the First and Second Adam amplifies in practical ways the philosophical conflict in his introduction.

Get through with this - understand what you've read - internalize it and . . . you're a much better person for it. Adam 1 and Adam 2 are unique characterizations of the 'real' world and how we approach and understand it. It also makes for a quicker and more accurate take on where the other person is coming from. Read this first and then read 'The Social Animal' by David Brooks. Done in that order and you WILL BE A BETTER PERSON FOR THE EFFORT.
