I really anticipated reading this book. As someone working in a connected industry as a space-planner and designer, I am always interested in other’s ideas. I found the beginnings of the story to be honest and forthright, and having humor (book club details), but as I continued reading, I was caught up in what feels like self-absorption, at the expense of others. (Taking catering server shifts on holidays and leaving young family at home, to dispel the sadness of missing eldest child away as an exchange student in Europe. Or dismissing her husband’s very real challenges for shifting careers prior to her shift, which required the entire family to be up-ended financially. Requiring that husband begin moving at 8 PM after his 14 hour work day.) I don’t know. This just did not resonate in the way I had hoped. This story actually jarred me.

Admittedly, when I bought this book I thought it would give me room by room instructions for how to organize every space in my house. In a way it is that, but it is so much more. I have described this book to friends as a cross between a personal memoir and a de-cluttering self-help book. Laura's book is an inspiring story of the journey towards happiness and self-fulfillment by simplifying our surroundings and unburdening ourselves from all the things that weigh us down, not just the clutter in our homes, but the clutter in our day to day lives. After a successful career as a teacher, Laura took the proverbial plunge towards her own self-fulfillment by leaving the classroom and her comfortable life in the 'burbs to buying an actual hoarded house and becoming her own boss with her home organizing business. It was delighfully suspenseful at times and Laura's writing style made me feel like I was reading through a good friend's personal journal ---relatable and very down-to-earth. A quick but compelling read, it left me feeling inspired to give careful consideration to the goals in my own life, how I spend my time both at work and home, and where to keep all those extra lids to the multiplying plastic food containers in my kitchen. (hint - toss them!). I highly recommend this book.

This book was full of practical tips from how to organize to how to find new homes for things you no longer want! But what made the book a quick read for me was Laura's story and how it was engaging from start to finish. Not only did I want to keep reading to find out how the "hoarder" home was transformed but I also wanted to hear how Laura's transformation from school teacher to professional organizer turned out. It was an easy read, entertaining and full of great tips!

I absolutely love this book. It gave me exactly what I needed: emotional motivation. While this is not a typical step-by-step, room-by-room organizing handbook, it is actually much easier to read than an instructional book. How-to books can be quite tedious to work through. This one is very entertaining, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next with the house situation! On the surface, I would agree with one reviewer about the huge risks Laura took -- but actually, that is not the point! The point is to follow your intuition -- and you can do that at any risk level you feel comfortable with. That is exactly why this book resonated with me. I am working on learning to follow my intuition, both for organizing my home and for finding a new passion and possibly a different career.Letting go of things is extremely hard for me (for fear that I will need them down the road), but this intuitive approach will help.

Laura helped us organize our garage. Before, it was an obstacle course where most of the time we wouldn't even bother looking for items we knew were there somewhere. After Laura helped us the clutter and mystery is gone. It took two days, but it easily has saved us that and more. When Laura came out with her book, I knew it would be useful for people who want to get better organized. What I didn't anticipate was the heart-felt and universal personal story of transformation. It is an encouraging message for anyone who wants to make positive changes in their lives.

I found this book an easy and enjoyable read, actually I couldn’t put it down once I started! It was beautifully written, and had a magical way of connecting with the reader at a soul level. I found so much inspiration in this book and could relate on so many levels. I admire Laura’s courage and am grateful to her for sharing her story and helping me along my own personal journey. Whether you are interested in the “organization” aspect or not, this book will feed your soul and leave you satisfied.

I loved reading Laura's personal story of how she went from feeling trapped in her life to shedding what didn't serve her... her career, her home, the limiting beliefs that she had to keep living the way she was. It's not a how-to book on organizing, though there are plenty of tips throughout the book that will resonate with anyone struggling to get organized. It's a how-i-did-it story, and a how-i-became-an-organizer story that is inspiring!I appreciated Laura's frankness about the tough decisions, the struggles, and the moments that carried her through their tough times, and I found myself rooting for her success from the very first pages! It's so clear that she *lives* the same philosophy with which she helps her clients make changes in their own lives.

The book practically read itself, as it arrived on a Friday and was finished with my morning coffee on Saturday. Her personal story, and uncluttered logic made me comprehend and appreciate where she was, why she had to lead this charge and how dedicated she was to arrive. I guarantee any reader that there is a part in her story that will capture you and bring you the same strength to navigate your own personal adventure.

This graphic novel's smooth and glossy pages enhance Cati Baur's fine and loose line work and muted watercolor-style colors. The book, when new, smells wonderful, too--if you enjoy that sort of thing. The paperback has a French flaps-style cover, which together with the book's large size (about 8.5" x 11"), makes the book a pleasure to read and hold.Graphic novels with line work and muted colors like these are ones I love to read inside on cold and cloudy days. While a few panels appear a little "unfinished", and the layout of the panels could be more dynamic, most of the panels are drawn and colored in great detail. The story is entertaining, and the story and characters remind me of a Jane Austen novel; however, I collect graphic novels and children's books for the artwork and not the story, so that's why my review is scant on the latter.Speaking of Jane Austen, if you love this book's artwork, you might also like the graphic novel, Sense and Sensibility, adapted by Nancy Butler and illustrated by Sonny Liew. The colors and line work have a very similar "feel" to them.

The art is beautiful. The many sisters have to survive without parents, who appear as friendly ghosts.I have never liked the trope of friendly ghost parents protecting people. Dead people are just not helpful, and the dead parents are too sweet to stomach. The elderly great aunt is a snore of a cliche, too.But the art is lovely and you do find yourself hoping it all works out, and hoping that volume 2 will give more depth to the situation, so, OK, 4 stars.Loved the afterward where the artist and writer discover their mutual inspirations for the characters.

This graphic novel is a winner! I predict great things from it. Great story line and fantastic graphics. The book really came alive. Just bought this on a vacation in Berlin. Rushed back to the bookstore to pick up the second in the series only to find it hasn’t come out yet. Will keep my eyes open for when the others come out. Loved it!!!!!!!

#87,876 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I loved this book. I had to read it for a class and I wholly agree with that other reader who pointed out the importance of this book. Holmes does an amazing job of pointing out the systemic discrimination and dehumanization of migrant workers and pulling it out of a purely political context. If you don't know anything or if you think you know a lot, this work is indispensable. The anthropological perspective creates a wonderfully holistic and important ethnography. That being said, this is an anthropological work. There are references and there is jargon because this is academic writing. It is very well written and an easy read, but if you are not familiar with some of the jargon then I recommend looking it up when you come across it. Aside from that, it is easy to follow and engaging. Holmes does a great job of pulling together theory and anecdotes, not just from the Triqui workers, but from the bosses, doctors, and other workers in different positions in the fields. This is all together a must read.

Holmes' moving work reveals the "bad faith" American consumerism that criminalizes migrant laborers even as it depends on them for access to the dinner table. While his theoretical framework is at times awkward, his analysis of the social plight of his Triqui companions more than compensates for this deficiency. The larger issues of neoliberal market inequalities may at times seem a little daunting for non-academic readers, but Holmes' narrative consistently demonstrates that our demand for cheap products has devastating global consequences. Definitely worth a close read.

Excellent read from start to finish. The author uses ethnography to tell the story of Triqui Mexican migrants in an immensely illuminating fashion. He expands our perceptions by analysing the domestic and international social, economic and political structure in which migration exists. He also utilizes critical theories to explain the normalization of migrant suffering and how that suffering is illegitimate, along with its naturalization. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in social justice and is looking for articulate language to illustrate clear ideas around some of the problems precluding and solutions for bringing about social justice and general equity.

This review is one that I wrote for my anthropology class, but I thought it could be helpful for potential readers as well: Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies by Seth Holmes is one of the few books that I have read that I consider so forceful, so meaningful, and so necessary to the readership of our time, that I can find few words to adequately describe both my experience reading this text and the content in its pages. I suppose I will begin with my myself and my experience of the text, and then move in to what the text contains any why I believe it is important. If I frame my review this way, I believe the importance of this book becomes clearer. To start, I myself am a white male born as an American citizen. Aside from those privileges, I grew up in a middle-class world in a resort town in Skagit county, on the western edge of the valley where much of the ethnographic fieldwork of Seth Holmes was located. While racial lines of oppression are clear between the reservation lands of the Native tribes, the newer, more transient forms of oppression (migrant farm work) slipped by me unnoticed. For someone with my experience driving by these wholesome looking homesteads, gazing with pleasant admiration at the beautiful romance of the misty, rolling fields, observing the migrant workers and their skillful labor of the earth, this book has put a necessary frame onto the experience that I have of Skagit Valley. Still to this day when I drive up north to visit family back home, I always take the "scenic route." That route involves passing right through the major farmland of the valley, so the sight of seasonal, migrant labor is and has always been unavoidable to me. My own aunts and uncles own apple and cherry orchards on the East side of the mountains, and I have grown up not just observing migrant workers, but even laboring alongside them at times. The stories of the white teenage workers in Holmes' book ring true to my own account of privilege. Beyond my work with and observation of, I have never investigated the issues of migration or racism that migrant laborers are subject to. Despite lacking larger investigation, I have never asked them their story or observed them (even in my admirations) beyond their labor. In fact, it has been my deep appreciation of production (part of my affluent, work hard and you will earn rewards ethic) that has disguised the need for their stories to be heard. I see them and how hard they work, so my normalized conclusion is that they will benefit, if not now but someday, for the sake of their efforts alone. Because of that, reading this book has struck a chord so low and rolling in my body, that I wept for hours when I first picked it up and turned its pages. I am a student studying theology and philosophy, and I have taken a great interest in community organizing, ethics, human rights, consumerism, globalization, and other topics related and unrelated to Holmes' work. It is my experience, being stuck in books dense in theory and thought, which are full of well-performed arguments, that my edge has dulled, not sharpened. I sometimes forget what I care about, where the fight takes place, or even who is really involved, when I am so busy reading about it all in theory. While I have spent time with local activists in the Puget Sound and also activists working on a larger scale both in Chicago and Atlanta, it wasn’t until reading this book that my experience became so earthy, so grounded, that I felt I had the clarity to really understand and articulate my position. Really, this book has cultivated a new sense of meaning for my budding mission. So, this is where my review transitions. After reading such a masterful book like this, I would recommend it to anyone. Holmes gracefully writes of both his experience and combined theories, concluding with clear, concrete, palatable actions for his readership to take. This book is neither so academic so that its scope is too small, nor so simple that it does a disservice to the reality of migrant labor in today’s complicated context. I believe that this book is relevant to a broad readership that could range from anyone committed to an investigative approach on the issues of migration and production in America today, down to anyone who purchases fruit in the market and wonders about more than its freshness and price. Seth Holmes begins his book with an acknowledgement, which to me is perhaps the highest honor that this book ultimately accomplishes. Sure, the book is also an inspiration to readers, a nod to academics, or a source of income perhaps with adequate publication. But to me, this book accomplishes acknowledging the unacknowledged. "Most importantly, I want to thank the Triqui people... and their trust," are Seth Holmes' words in the opening paragraph of his introduction. In the following chapters Holmes explains much of his unique approach, dancing on the line between his anthropological and medical disciplines. His approach is refreshing because it is so intentional and succinct. He guides his readers through narratively framed stories of his experience, openly engaging his own body's involvement in many encounters, interactions, and situations. His intuition and sensitivity of his surroundings, his honesty and awareness of his own perspective, creates a picture of his fieldwork that becomes the iconic example of ethnographic fieldwork, done the way it should be. I am satisfied knowing that many undergraduate anthropology classes in America have already picked up this text for its required reading. After he has a section on his fieldwork, often framed as a story-experience, he uses theory and research to interpret what it all means. Steadily and methodically through his book, he frames the experience of his Triqui friends in terms of their motivation for migrating, their internalized sense of identity as a people, and the rich description of their life and work before during and after their time on the farms they seasonally labor for. Holmes clearly and without hesitation identifies to his readership the role of the farm and the farm's place within a global, competitive market. He honestly portrays the difficulties of a family-owned farm, seeking to treat its workers with equity while simultaneously competing against the small fruit import market from China and California. Holmes continues by naming the racist metastructure that contributes to the social position of the Triqui people, all of who are indigenous Mexicans. He engages the linguistic difficulties faced by his companions, by naming the privilege of English and Spanish over their indigenous language and dialect. He discusses everything from literally their position on the farm and at home in Mexico geographically, to literally their position in height (working on the ground) as measures of marginalization and oppression. Holmes furthers his investigation by bringing in his medical background and discipline, displaying the embodied experience of the Triqui people in transit, as deeply damaging to their livelihood and health. By the grace of true genius, Holmes interprets and explains the massively complicated issues that arise in light of this work. He talks about the normalization, internalization, and naturalization of symbolic violence and how this relates to the structural violence that regulates the continuum of the whole picture. Holmes makes it clear to his readers, without lengthy explanation in theory, but thorough explanation by example, what violence looks like now, how it all continues to perpetuate itself, and what can be done to stop it. Holmes doesn't just talk about what "bad faith" is, or how ignorance is perpetuated, he shows his readers and then demonstrates clearly what can be done. Holmes takes the work of many esteemed scholars, (Bourdieu, Bourgois, Geertz, Scheper-Hughes, Merleau-Ponty, Foucault, Primo Levi, Sartre, Paul Farmer, Levinas, and many many others) subjects such as structural and systemic violence, transnationalism, globalization, consumerism, economism, and phenomenology (to name a just a few), all with the politics, ethics, and economics of the holistic picture - and distills this into a package that is not only palatable and digestable to a budding or even novice reader, but manages to give incredible dignity and personhood to his subjects: the Triqui people. Holmes is uncompromising in his mission, yet wholly satisfying to both the reader with an intense theoretical background and the average produce-eating consumer who is concerned with knowing the truth of the situation. Holmes communicates to his readers what must be done: by fighting the words and language which are damaging to the personhood of the marginalized (tearing down the symbolic violence), by simply asking the oppressed themselves what they need (giving them dignity as subjects and "pragmatic solidarity"), and through medical reform (reevaluating entities and their health to include political, social, historical, and economic context - not just their bio-medical/behavioral status), change is possible. While I really could not end this review on a note strong enough to make particular my love of this book, I know that the effect its pages have had and will have on my beliefs, actions, and relationships will ultimately communicate just how important Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies is; no ethnography has ever had such a forceful effect on my being and personhood before.

After reading Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies you will be hard-pressed to shop for fruits and vegetables at your grocery store without thinking about those who helped bring the produce out of the fields. Their stories help to unfold and expose the rhetoric we hear about preventing undocumented workers from entering the U.S. These are people with families and responsibilities trying to earn a living as best they can. Dr. Holmes' efforts to tell us about them and the work they do is a national service to be commended. Bravo!

This book tells a story that needs to be told, of the people who tend and harvest the food that sustains us, that sustains society who are driven out of their homeland by the hidden hand of an exploitive economic system and then marginalized and criminalized -- the better to exploit you with. The author tells this story as someone who walked in the shoes of his protagonists. And more, he writes with a scientific spirit of uncovering not only the clear injustice of the condition of migrant farmworkers, but the different social groupings they interact with and how each views their roles in this structure. He pays particular attention to health issues and reveals important insights on how social services are delivered to those this social order views as worthy only so long as they produce wealth for others.

The first half of this book was amazing, as he describes daily life as he lived with/alongside the migrant workers. The second half was more sociology and theory. Not bad at all, just surprised me.Maybe if he divided the book into 2 sections it would flow better. But his experiences make it worth every cent.

(EDIT: Coming back a few weeks later to reread my review. I am fully recovered from the fog of irritation that reading the book put me in. I ripped this author a new one in this review, so I just came back to soften my language. I still stand by all my points. None are changed. A few were redacted. Just got carried away the first time writing this.)There is a solid amount of great content in this book, which is why I gave it two stars instead of one. Definitely high-value strategies in here, but I'm surprised she didn't manage to get Entrepreneur Magazine to publish this thing with a pink bow and glitter inside.I'm sorry, but this book is insanely obnoxious to read. 220 pages of cringe. It’s literally so annoying when she uses the word “literally” like a white girl in private school. That alone is enough to take a solid cut from the merit of this book. Her style of writing is simply annoying, distracting, and filled with super unnecessary, cute prose as well as random tangents. I had to make an appointment with my ophthalmologist to check my eyes because they rolled back in my head so many times reading this. (So that’s *exactly* the kind of sentence she includes on almost every page. See? I'm not exaggerating). Here are some examples of the cringe sprinkled throughout her book. If you think I’m being unfair by taking these out of context, I’m not. They sound as random throughout these chapters as they sound just reading them in a list:• “I'm spilling all the beans. Even the pintos!”• “I’m a loyal fan of the Green Bean Roasting Company in York, Pennsylvania, [Hi, Jen and Vanessa!]….”• “It seems I either hire people who have the same delicious obsessions as me, or I rub off on them over time…. Especially if you’re willing to throw in Pumpkin Spice, aka Soccer Mom Catnip.”• “Tell me what you want, what you really, really want.”• “More cow bell!”• “Give it to me baby!”• “Take a nap. Because you can.”• “Buy an artist’s smock because you are now officially a ‘creative type.’”• “Wear your artist smock out to pick up an extra-customized obscure coffee drink. Resist the urge to order it on your mobile app so you don’t have to say all of the bizarre ingredients out loud.”• “Do a little happy dance…. Keep on boogying.”• “Dream of having an emoji created in your honor someday because of your Instagram awesomeness.”• “If Doublemint gum is still a thing, chew it in honor of doubling up your efforts.”• “Create your own touchdown dance when you check your follower numbers.”A solid 10% of this book is promo for other marketers. She fills up pages with fluffy interviews with digital marketers and conveniently plugs their info throughout and at the end. She’s marketing to people in a book about marketing. Jinkies!!!Also, anytime you see a book that has (until now) unanimous 5-star reviews, your BS detector should go off. For your future research of ANY business book––especially marketing––please understand that the authors can hustle Amazon reviews like nobody's business. When a book has ALL 5 STAR REVIEWS… please understand that it’s not a coincidence.Kim... this book reads like a cute mom blog. You isolate the 99% of the readers who don't have children to deliver to soccer practice. Entrepreneur Magazine pumps out AMAZING "Ultimate Guide" books on marketing. I have no idea how they could let this one go. I just really would suggest the next book you write to cut the fat. Your fun-to-read delivery doesn't make the information easy-to-read––it’s just massively distracting and annoying.I’ve read a ton of marketing books from Amazon. This one is about 30% substance and not worth the money, in my opinion. I've made this point a few times already, but it will be fun to read for the female demo like 40+. If you're not in that demo, there are better options for learning about Instagram marketing. There is no info in here that you won’t get anywhere else delivered without the glitter. Hands down the best one is 500 Social Media Marketing Tips. (I’m not affiliated with the author in any way and this isn't a promotion. That book is just insanely practical.) Hope this sheds light to those who needed to know this.

Most of the content seemed to be common sense stuff. Given the choice, I wouldn't buy it again.

I'm new to social media and found some good content in on a few ideas of how to grow your following.

Very knowledgeable and easy to understand

So I finished the book AND it exceeded all of my initial expectations! Kim W Phillips does an amazing job of explaining every little detail necessary to get Instagram up and running. The guest contributors were also phenomenal, e.g.: Don't know what a sales funnel is or how to build one, Ollie Billson explains the whole process step-by-step. Wondering how to monetize the people you attract through Instagram? Dave Dee will teach you how to make the sale to MANY instead of just one at a time. Codie Sanchez shows us how to grow a legendary list through Instagram...need I say more? How about Kim's 21 Day Blueprint to succeed at Instagram! Monday morning is Day 1 for me. Get the book and wish me success, I do the same for you! Before:Can you say Insta-book about Insta-gram! Lightning fast delivery for a very exciting book, all about Instagram for Business. I am part way through the book and already LOVE the information. I am also impressed with the how Kim makes the whole process seem so simple 😊, especially for a non-techie, like myself. Who knew that Instagram could offer so much to the building of a business. Get the book and jump on the Instagram bandwagon before everybody else gets there!

great book, helped my brand out! Check out Dohenyboyz on insta

Outstanding! I love Kim's style. Her puns, playful exaggerations, and personal quips make reading this book very compelling. Her writing reminds me of watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off. You know when he looks at the camera and adds an observation, or just a look of astonishment.Do not take that the wrong way. The content is spot on. I'm so tech challenged, I get anxious trying to answer my iPhone. My eight year old taught me to text just two months ago. Kim's material had me up and running on Instagram almost instantly, and I had a dozen followers within minutes. This book teaches everything you need to know about Instagram and is a fun read too.

#2,858 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Yuval Noah Harari's "Homo Deus" continues the tradition introduced in his previous book "Sapiens": clever, clear and humorous writing, intelligent analogies and a remarkable sweep through human history, culture, intellect and technology. In general it is as readable as "Sapiens" but suffers from a few limitations. On the positive side, Mr. Harari brings the same colorful and thought-provoking writing and broad grasp of humanity, both ancient and contemporary, to the table. He starts with exploring the three main causes of human misery through the ages - disease, starvation and war - and talks extensively about how improved technological development, liberal political and cultural institutions and economic freedom have led to very significant declines in each of these maladies. Continuing his theme from "Sapiens", a major part of the discussion is devoted to shared zeitgeists like religion and other forms of belief that, notwithstanding some of their pernicious effects, can unify a remarkably large number of people across the world in striving together for humanity's betterment. As in "Sapiens", Mr. Harari enlivens his discussion with popular analogies from current culture ranging from McDonald's and modern marriage to American politics and pop music. Mr. Harari's basic take is that science and technology combined with a shared sense of morality have created a solid liberal framework around the world that puts individual rights front and center. There are undoubtedly communities that don't respect individual rights as much as others, but these are usually seen as challenging the centuries-long march toward liberal individualism rather than upholding the global trend. The discussion above covers about two thirds of the book. About half of this material is recycled from "Sapiens" with a few fresh perspectives and analogies. The most important general message that Mr. Harari delivers, especially in the last one third of the book, is that this long and inevitable-sounding imperative of liberal freedom is now ironically threatened by the very forces that enabled it, most notably the forces of technology and globalization. Foremost among these are artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. These significant new developments are gradually making human beings cede their authority to machines, in ways small and big, explicitly and quietly. Ranging from dating to medical diagnosis, from the care of the elderly to household work, entire industries now stand to both benefit and be complemented or even superseded by the march of the machines. Mr. Harari speculates about a bold vision in which most manual labor has been taken over by machines and true human input is limited only to a very limited number of people, many of whom because of their creativity and demand will likely be in the top financial echelons of society. How will the rich and the poor live in these societies? We have already seen how the technological decimation of parts of the working class was a major theme in the 2016 election in the United States and the vote for Brexit in the United Kingdom. It was also a factor that was woefully ignored in the public discussion leading up to these events, probably because it is much easier to provoke human beings against other human beings rather than against cold, impersonal machines. And yet it is the cold, impersonal machines which will increasingly interfere with human lives. How will social harmony be preserved in the face of such interference? If people whose jobs are now being done by machines get bored, what new forms of entertainment and work will we have to invent to keep them occupied? Man after all is a thinking creature, and extended boredom can cause all sorts of psychological and social problems. If the division of labor between machines and men becomes extreme, will society fragment into H. G. Wells's vision of two species, one of which literally feeds on the other even as it sustains it?These are all tantalizing as well as concerning questions, but while Mr. Harari does hold forth on them with some intensity and imagination, this part of the book is where his limitations become clear. Since the argument about ceding human authority to machines is also a central one, the omission also unfortunately appears to me to be a serious one. The problem is that Mr. Harari is an anthropologist and social scientist, not an engineer, computer scientist or biologist, and many of the questions of AI are firmly grounded in engineering and software algorithms. There are mountains of literature written about machine learning and AI and especially their technical strengths and limitations, but Mr. Harari makes few efforts to follow them or to explicate their central arguments. Unfortunately there is a lot of hype these days about AI, and Mr. Harari dwells on some of the fanciful hype without grounding us in reality. In short, his take on AI is slim on details, and he makes sweeping and often one-sided arguments while largely skirting clear of the raw facts. The same goes for his treatment for biology. He mentions gene editing several times, and there is no doubt that this technology is going to make some significant inroads into our lives, but what is missing is a realistic discussion of what biotechnology can or cannot do. It is one thing to mention brain-machine interfaces that would allow our brains to access supercomputer-like speeds in an offhand manner; it's another to actually discuss to what extent this would be feasible and what the best science of our day has to say about it.In the field of AI, particularly missing is a discussion of neural networks and deep learning which are two of the main tools used in AI research. Also missing is a view of a plurality of AI scenarios in which machines either complement, subjugate or are largely tamed by humans. When it comes to AI and the future, while general trends are going to be important, much of the devil will be in the details - details which decide how the actual applications of AI will be sliced and diced. This is an arena in which even Mr. Harari's capacious intellect falls short. The ensuing discussion thus seems tantalizing but does not give us a clear idea of the actual potential of machine technology to impact human culture and civilization. For reading more about these aspects, I would recommend books like Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence", Pedro Domingos's "The Master Algorithm" and John Markoff's "Machines of Loving Grace". All these books delve into the actual details that sum up the promise and fear of artificial intelligence.Notwithstanding these limitations, the book is certainly readable, especially if you haven't read "Sapiens" before. Mr. Harari's writing is often crisp, the play of his words is deftly clever and the reach of his mind and imagination immerses us in a grand landscape of ideas and history. At the very least he gives us a very good idea of how far we as human beings have come and how far we still have to go. As a proficient prognosticator Mr. Harari's crystal ball remains murky, but as a surveyor of past human accomplishments his robust and unique abilities are still impressive and worth admiring.

This book is a mixed bag. It has three parts. The first is a review of some of the concepts explored in Harari's earlier book Sapiens. It elaborates on the fascinating concept of "intersubjective reality", whereby concepts that are shared in our collective imagination have great power to shape our objective reality; examples given include money, corporations, pop-culture brands, and religions. Part 1 is engaging and insightful, and deserves 4/5 stars.Part 2 is a critique of what Harari calls "humanism". He really dislikes humanism: he inaccurately states its tenets, and then repeatedly mocks it (for example, as promoting indulgent consumerism and sex). He claims that humanism is what is giving rise to an emerging cybernetic dystopia, described in Part 3.Harari is abusing the word "humanism," as a canvas on which to paint his caricature of modern liberal culture ("liberal" in the classical sense, not in the sense of left-wing politics). He is not really interested in what humanist writers and philosophers have actually said, and does not reference their works. He claims that humanism promotes the belief in a supernatural free will (when in fact, humanists value agency and freedom, but have differing opinions on free will). He claims that humanism believes in an indivisible self/soul (when in fact, psychologists since Freud have a different understanding). And he claims that humanism believes that individuals always know best about their own needs (when in fact, many have emphasized the importance of education in our development--he does not even reference John Dewey). Harari also co-opts related terms that already have other established meanings, such as "evolutionary humanism" and "liberal humanism".If you want to understand humanism or other social-political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, Harari will lead you astray. Part 2 deserves only 2/5 stars.Part 3 is a dire prediction for humanity's future, as genetic engineering, AI, and human-machine interface technologies advance. Harari gives several scenarios, each of which are described very plausibly as future extrapolations of current trends. These scenarios are thought provoking and disturbing--we as a society should be taking them more seriously. There is an interesting discussion of an emerging religion/ideology of "dataism", wherein moral worth depends on the ability to enhance data flow, rather than on consciousness. Part 3 deserves 4/5 stars. For most of the book, Harari appears to be adopting a materialistic perspective, and one which is also extremely unsentimental and discounts the significance of human morale and character. He pretends to assume that human beings are nothing more than algorithms. However, some of his arguments (against the existence of an indivisible self, against free-will) are similar to those in Buddhism. He also discusses how animals and people have consciousness and subjective experiences, and presumes that artificial intelligence will remain unconscious (the "weak AI" hypothesis of John Searle). And on the very last page, he makes us wonder if his hardcore materialistic perspective has just been a long, extended ruse: he asks us to question a worldview that would deny the significance of consciousness. So it seems likely that in a future book he will focus on the nature of consciousness, and argue for non-theistic Buddhism (an understated agenda in Harari's writing--perhaps he thinks that this is the way for humanity to avoid the grim fate predicted here?).The reader concerned about techno-dystopia may also be interested in "Weapons of Math Destruction," by Cathy O'Neil.[Update 6/13/2017: see the comment below, by kaiser100, for further insight into Harari's perspective on consciousness and meditation. The comment begins with "Harari indeed believes that developing an understanding of consciousness, a science of mind, or however else one wishes to phrase it is the best and perhaps the only way to avert the grim fate that threatens humanity in this century."]

Purchased for my daughter - the pictures are really cute, however, when it advertises as a 16 month calendar it's misleading...the first 4 months are actually in a mini calendar printed on one page instead of a full calendar month for September-December printed individually. Would not purchase again as the product did not provide what we needed ultimately.

Paid less than $4 for this calendar and it's definitely worth more. Adorable photos, including: cats, dogs, goats, bunnies and of course hedgehogs. High quality paper that's thick enough so if you write with a pen it won't bleed through to the next month. I especially like the font used for the months and that there is plenty of room for writing down appointments or reminders. Excellent product!

Have you ever ordered a calendar and have it arrive printed on the thinnest paper ever? I have and I am always worried about that. This one is nice thick paper and photos look great. My girls love this calendar.

Not as good as last year's, mainly just cats and dogs but I love the layout of this calendar. It's large bold font is easy to see. I hope they keep making these just with different animals.

I liked the price. The pictures are about average and nothing super cute. The paper quality is great. I needed a higher quality calendar at an affordable price.

The pictures are really cute and the design/typography is pretty and modern. I wish that the date boxes were a little bigger so I could write more, but I'm overall very pleased!

My best friend loved it as a simple Christmas gift!

Came as expected in perfect condition.
