I'll admit, I don't usually like reading self-help books. They just aren't my thing. (Could this mean I'm stubborn and don't like people telling me what to do? ha!) However, I wanted to read this book, because I am familiar with the author, and I think she's an engaging writer. I do love biographies and memoirs, and this book has enough of Rachel's personal story to be interesting and engaging, even for a self-help book. :)The Brave Art of Motherhood presents a lot of ideas for getting "unstuck." Rachel uses her own stories to illustrate her ideas and to motivate and inspire the reader to move past the places where they feel stuck in life. It really does feel like a message from a motivational speaker, and if you feel stuck in life as Rachel did, you'll likely get excited at the opportunity to move past those places in your own life. It's a lot of "pull up your bootstraps and just do it" instruction, but in an empowering sort of way. While I haven’t personally dealt with some of the situations Rachel struggled to escape, still, I could see how her instruction could be applied to many areas of life.Rachel has come through a lot of difficult things, and my heart was touched on many occasions while I read. This book seems like an offering written out of compassion and understanding.Some other reviewers have mentioned their disappointment in a lack of faith-based encouragement and instruction, since Rachel is a Christian and the publisher sells Christian material. It is true, this book does not mention God's working as much as it does perseverance and personal striving, but it seemed to be a deliberate choice by the author. She made it clear that she was a Christian, but perhaps, she was hoping that writing in this format would allow women who don't share her faith to benefit from the instruction.This book was written and put together well, and I believe it will empower women to make those changes necessary to bring deliverance from unnecessary trials, stresses, burdens and other seemingly impossible situations.
With families living further and further apart and the increasing numbers of single moms (myself included), motherhood can feel very lonely. Compound that with the importance of our role as mothers and the never ending work load and you get some very exhausted and even depressed mothers. We all seem to think we're alone in this, but Rachel writes so honestly from the trenches herself! Her words have been a life-line for me and keep pointing me toward the joy of motherhood!
From the opening pages you see that the author has a big heart and love for all mothers who are struggling to just get through each day, who think they're alone, who think that they don't matter. Because of this great love, she opens up and shares the deepest, darkest times of her life to show others that no, they're not alone! She hit rock bottom multiple times, she got knocked down multiple times but "she stood back up, over and over." She'd spent so much of her life trying to be the person she thought she was supposed to be. She hid so many parts of her life because she didn't think she'd be accepted by others. She hit one of the rock bottoms and couldn't hide the truth any more. What happened? Those around her not only supported her but all of them had truths of their own that they were hiding from others! The flood gates opened! That's where the seed for this book was planted. As her journey continued there were people in her life who helped her get through the hardest of times. They helped her in different parts of her life and it helped her see a wider picture. This book brings all the pieces together to form that wider picture. In Part 1 she lays out all the things in her life that were preventing her from changing. The things she was doing to get through each day were the very things that were preventing her from breaking free. Part 2 she "Exposes Excuses." Every reader will be able to see themselves not only in areas from Part 1 that are preventing them from changing, but especially in Part 2 with all the excuses. She covers three sections in detail. Each one is very eye opening and so many wouldn't think they are excuses at all and can't see how each of them is hurting any real change! Part 3 is "Building a New Reality." She gives real steps that anyone can do! There are simple steps that build on each other. And she offers such encouragement every step of the way! She knows what it feels like to go through all this. She knows what it's like to be at the bottom and to slowly, step by step, inch by inch, crawl her way out. At the beginning of the book she spoke of herself as a mother of seven kids with the IRS coming after her and $15 to her name. The blurb at the end about the author describes her as going from poverty to "being named one of Inc. magazine's top eighteen up-and-coming women entrepreneurs. Maybe you don't have that dream, but you do have a dream. It can be a small dream, but it's YOUR dream. Or it can be a big, knock your socks off kind of dream. Whatever it is, Rachel wants to help you succeed! She wants to give you hope that it can be done! Read the book! What have you got to loose? Your dream! Back in 2002, I some how accidentally stumbled upon Gedney's collection which was hosted by Duke University. Lost in hours of viewing, I found myself drawn to his work. Gedney's ability to capture that moment in time of people that is unrehearsed or poised. That vulnerable moment. Digging more, I discovered this book and purchased it. The examples of his work alone are inspirational for any photographer to become a better photographer. Here is the link to Duke's Collection....not sure if Amazon will permit it. Very interesting book with outstanding photography. Unfortunately, my favorite from India which was published in a review is not in the book. It is one of boys sleeping on a platform with pillars. Oh well. I plan to pass it on to my sons.
What a fantastic photographer -- if only he had lived.His work was compartmentalized into various locations, and it must have been impossible to show enough of each segment within the pages of a small book.He needs a VIDEO of his work.
I picked up this book a few years ago in a used bookstore in Brooklyn. Since then it has become one of my most treasured and valued books on the subject of photography.*The images themselves are rare examples of a great photographer's mind at work, all the necessary elements are there; composition, timing and most importantly content.I often bring this book out of the bookshelf and keep it close to my desk for a few weeks, reading passages and viewing images over the course of a few weeks. I never fail to be impressed and a little inspired.* While my library is not that terribly extensive it is however a little selective.
This a book that you want to watch, read and then restart again and every time you discover something. Very well done by the curator, gives you a full inside view of the life and works of Gedney.

This is an exhaustive account of the pre-production, production, and post-production of The Empire Strikes Back. Everything you ever wanted to know about the film is most likely here...and then some.It sounds like the making of this film was arduous, and, as such, the book can be an arduous read at times. Every time it got back to the topic of developing the character of Yoda, I thought, "Oh no, not Yoda again." That having been said, the book does what it sets out to do, and gives the reader what I can only assume is the complete story of the making of this film. It's a well-written book and definitely worth your time if you're a fan of the film.A warning about the embedded video and audio clips: they're a worthy addition to the book, but did not work for me on anything other than my iPhone -- not my Android tablet, and not my PC. At the time I purchased the book, the description stated it would work on Android (and I think PC as well), but this was not the case.
If you want/need one photo book with the back ground of the filming of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, it is this book. Gorgeous presentation, filled with hundreds of well known to never before seen photos from the production and in depth stories making the film .Well made and printed on high quality paper.
Not surprisingly, Ritter has done it again. Fascinating and detailed coverage of the production of The Empire Strikes Back, with plenty of concept drawings, production photos, and other material. My only complaint is that Rinzler's comprehensive coverage of everything means there are parts here and there that get overwhelmed with the names of staff, lawyers, studio executives, associates, etc, but it's easy to gloss over these parts if you wish to.Warning: this book, like all of his "making of" books and the blueprints book, is cocaine for Star Wars enthusiasts. Make sure you have enough money to buy the whole set, because you won't be able to stop after the first one...
Another top notch making of book from Mr. Rinzler. Incredible behind the scenes photos-- I thought I had seen them all after 30 years being a fan of this movie. Terrific artwork-- concept drawings, storyboards, models, you name it. The narrative is terrific-- you get not only the behind the scenes info during filming, you also get a very interesting look at how Lucasfilm was created on the business side-- I didn't think I'd find this interesting, but it was one of the best parts. Also covers those years between the first two movies and the speculation about what the "Star Wars 2" would look like-- it was really fun to remember a time when we didn't know the rest of the story. In this case, even George didn't know yet. Sadly, it also brings home how bad the Prequel Trilogy is-- George stopped listening to his own advice-- get someone else to write the screenplay and to direct. But I digress... Thank you Mr. Rinzler for your exhaustive research!Wish list for Jedi: please put the narrative into electronic form. Reading this book is a physical challenge-- I would have loved to have been able to thumb through the narrative on my Kindle.
I read Rinzler's book on Episode 4 several years ago and eagerly awaited his treatment of Empire. But then it came out and was out of my price range.When I first saw that it was available on Kindle, I was skeptical because I wanted a "big book" that would match my first one on the shelf. But then, I saw where the Fire edition had audio and video extras ... and was a fourth of the cost!Reading this book was like an early Christmas for a Star Wars fan like me ! The writing was engaging, the pictures were beautiful and I loved the multimedia extras. Now, do I go ahead and get Jedi today or see if I get it for my birthday?
OMG, you just have to have this book. Beautiful pictures. The gold was the transcript from behind-the-scenes with Harrison Ford and the Director brainstorming scripting issues over the carbon-freeze scene during a break in filming. A beautiful nostalgic record, direct from the time of the making of the greatest Star Wars movie ever.
The content is absolutely great. The only issue I have is, I cannot play the media features: no audio nor video. I use the kindle for iPad app, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it just doesn't work when it comes to reproducing the media. Otherwise, its a must for Star Wars and movie fans alike.Illustratiosn and art are just fascinating to look over and over again.
As a Star Wars fan there are a lot of books that get marketed to me as being "essential" and many of them are not essential at all.This "making of" series by JW Rinzler is essential. It tells more about how the movies were made than any other book or document I've ever seen and it also seems to cut through a lot of the PR fluff and garbage but also has official stuff that no one else would ever see.
