About the Author
George Barr is a photographer living in Calgary, Canada. Serious about photography since age 12, working initially with a WWII Zeiss Ikonta in a basement-bathroom "darkroom", he has progressed through medium format, 4X5, and now digital SLR's. He earns his living as a family doctor with a special interest in psychiatry but his primary passion has always been the fine art print.Major milestones include learning to make quality prints from Fred Picker, learning to really "see" photographs from Hubert Hohn of the Edmonton Art Gallery, looking at Edward Weston prints bare, attending workshops, working with galleries, and being published.George has had his images published in the magazines Black and White Photography, Black and White, Focus, Lenswork, and Outdoor Photography.By the time George closed his darkroom, he was making very high quality prints and carried on this quality with digital cameras and inkjet printing, producing some of the finest inkjet prints made, surprising many traditional 4X5 photographers with the level of quality.Throughout his life George has been a teacher of medical students & residents, patients, and fellow photographers. A writer of understandable patient newsletters and handouts, it was a short step to writing essays on photography. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, took it a couple of photographs at a time in order to think about what the author and the individual photographers wrote. Most important for me, I enlarged my thinking about what I want to do with my own photography.I appreciate the criticism that some of the other comments make about the extent of (or lack of) technical information, whether or not the photographs were “great†or not, and the like. So much of this is subjective that I can’t really hang my hat on that kind of thing; I simply make my own evaluations and in this instance the book was well done, deserving of the reading I gave it, and in the end, satisfying.I tend to think that if I were to limit myself to only those photographs that were deemed “great†by others (good luck figuring out which ones to view and study) and books that fully achieved the promise of their titles or concepts, I wonder what I would end up viewing and reading after a month or so. There are so few books that actually attain that level, they fit on a single bookshelf at most. This book may not be great, but it is very good. It is also stimulating enough for me to wait for the author’s next offering.
George Barr writes in an eloquently simple style, and the format of this book (presenting an image and then discussing its compositional elements) is straightforward. The genius of the book, is that the author is able to "teach by example", and mold your approach to analyzing an image. By the end of the book, I often found myself able to anticipate what the author would say; in other words, I was learning how to analyze an image. This is not to say that the book is for "art critics". Rather, the author's point, is that as we learn to analyze an image, and become cognizant of the elements or constructs which make the image memorable and effective in conveying or eliciting a feeling, emotion, or reaction in the viewer, our own images improve. Once we have internalized the process, then we can (consciously at first, perhaps unconsciously later) look for these elements and constructs through our viewfinder as we compose a photograph. We learn to "see" and equally importantly to "feel" the image before we click the shutter. In some sense, you learn without even knowing you are studying! The images are excellent and represent a broad range of subjects and styles. (Each image is from a different photographer. The commentary by the photographer, which follows George Barr's analysis, is also interesting and informative.) I enjoyed the book, I learned from the book, and truly did not want it to end. Highly recommended.
This book is about analyzing images by other photographers from the author's points of view, while the author himself appears to be an amateur photographer or the like. The book idea is a bit strange, because everyone has different view about a photo image and how the views of one man should be gathered and published into a big heavy volumn is quite odd. I hate to say that the book is about being so smart after the fact, and it may just entice people to copy what have been done. A lot of the well known images have been talked over by the photographers who took them. It has little value to beginners who want to learn some basics and to advanced amateurs who want to enhance their art creation. But it's fair to say that gathering images and essays from over 50 photographers is an extraordinary effort, it takes a lot of patience and hard work just to put them together into a book. The sheer effort and determination of the author well deserve respect.
To begin with, 5 stars for the chutzpah of this effort!! Which, for the most part, is a vision realized. There was bound to be disagreement on the choices of the "great images" (I can think of any number of others from Michael Kenna, for instance) but that's the nature of the beast, given the expanse of photographic art. I'm also impressed with the quality of the reproductions, and the inclusion of the photographer's perspective. If there is a nit to pick, I was looking for more detailed analyses of the how and why of the magic, perhaps along the lines of a Richard Zakia treatment, but that would be a whole different book. This, in the meantime, is one to savor, and one for the ages.
I have purchased scores of photography books. I primarily purchase books of a single artist's photographs and like to study the images in order to improve my own skill and eye. This book contains 52 photographs accompanied by a detailed description of what makes the image 'work' as well as reflections and biographical information from the artist. I read every single word and studied each image as I read. It was the most amazing photography teaching/learning experience I have ever had (with the exception of one 5 day emersion workshop I attended)! Absolutely outstanding. The images that the author included are extremely varied - color, b&w, digital, chemical, large format, iPhone, older, new, straight, manipulated, multiple exposures, experimental processes, traditional capture and processing, experienced/professional photographers, new-kids-on-the-block - making the entire reading experience very expanding and inspirational. There were many photographs I loved and others that I would not personally have been drawn to but for which I acquired a new appreciation after reading the text. I have been so energized by this book and most highly recommend it to any photographer at any level who likes to look at the work of other photographers and learn to understand why a particular photograph works.

All share the Great Quest, which on the face of things, appears fantastically unlikely to succeed. Yet the heroes persist through countless obstacles and setbacks.I also sense an echo, in Vick’s hero Hank Jensen (possibly the most sympathetic protagonist I've read since Danny Torrance in the Overlook Hotel), of Bill Hodges in King’s Mr. Mercedes cycle. They seem to share the same wounded, damaged, relentless persistence in their journeys, despite how implausible success may seem. I just don’t see that kind of doggedness portrayed -- and so well -- very often.Then there are the “Bristol Butchersâ€, two of the most appallingly horrifying, just plain Evil-with-a-capital-E antagonists I have ever encountered. And that’s just chapter one. Plenty more to come, never doubt it.In short, Vick sucked me into the dark and detailed worlds of this story in less than twenty pages and never let me go until the very end. I haven’t encountered a new author I’ve enjoyed so much since I first discovered Stephen King all those years ago, nor been enraptured by a series like this since the DT series. I cannot *wait* for Book Three -- but I guess I’ll have to.WENDIGOThis prequel to Books One and Two tells the backstory of one mysterious character in the later books and demonstrates the antagonists' horrific ingenuity and delight in human destruction. This can be read first or second, but I suggest reading it third - or at least re-reading it after Book Two. You really can't go wrong.Erick Henry Vick is a masterful storyteller and world-builder, deftly creating and developing characters you wish you could join around the evening campfire, as well as truly malefic monsters from the darkest nightmares. Do yourself a favor and follow this guy. He is already writing an epic tale, I'm sure with much more to come.
This is a great series which continues to improve. Erik has woven a rich and entertaining fantasy world from several mythologies. The world is rich and inviting and even more importantly, so are the characters that inhabit it. They are not cardboard characters, rather they do the sorts of contrary things real life people do.This has been far and away my favorite series of the last 5 years. Highly recommended!
Good characters and story line, hope there's at least one more!
Do you want to get sucked into another realm for several hours? Do you want to be thinking about said realm and the amazing characters in it when you're not there? If the answer is yes, then do I have a series for you!! The Blood of the Isir series is amazing; the characters are so well written that I found myself sneering when certain characters were around and smiling and cheering for the others!This series is somewhat similar to some of Stephen King's work but the storyline is unique and original!! I have read all of Erik Henry Vick's books so far and I can't wait to read more!!
If you have an open mind and are looking for a book with everything imaginable buy this series now! You won't be disappointed! Dragons, giants, shape-shifters, time travel, new worlds, arificial intellegence and so much more! This trilogy has it all. Hank, a homicide detective, married with a son, catches a case that will change his life forever. He embarks on a journey of a lifetime (many lifetimes?) to catch the killers and ultimately to save the world (many worlds). Don't miss hank's quest as he discovers just what it means to be Isir.
These books are absolutly delicious if you love to devour a great story like me! I will happily "one-click" anything this author puts out there after reading these books and I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. I love the imagination that created these books the twist on the old gods and modern people mingling with magic and mythical beasties! What are you waiting for? Buy these now!!!

I am not gluten free but have cooked for a dear family member who is extremely gluten sensitive. It is evident this author has done her research. For instance who in the "gluten" world would even think to use a correct cocoa powder?! Or that there are UNcomplicated substitutes for bread flour? Or to thoroughly READ THE INGREDIENTS?! I also realized I must be very careful to not cross contaminate GF ingredients while cooking. Oh my goodness, I love the lay-out, definitions, explanations and the "Internationally Inspired" recipes! My mouth is watering! Gotta give it 5 stars!Dawn D.
I liked the “know your ingredients†section giving me information on items I was not familiar with in the recipe. Also, it was great to find different gluten recipes than the same old standards. Great find.
I've been reading up and thinking about going gluten free hoping it would help with health issues. This book gave me some recipes that I am excited to try out and I don't think it will upset my children. They don't like to eat "healthy" foods. But this book has some recipes that we normally eat like meatball subs, and with just some slight variations make it gluten free. I plan on making it for dinner tonight. This book also give variations which is helpful and the directions are easy to follow. I just don't think I will be using all the recipes because some seem too complicated and not for me and my family's taste preferences. However, there are many recipes that are simple and I am looking forward to testing them out. I think this book will bring me into the right direction of going gluten free. I received this book for free with the option to review or not.
I was given a free copy for an honest review and this book Wow'ed me. I would have gladly paid for it. The I liked the “know your ingredients†sections are great. The recipes are well written and are quite varied. There is something for everyone in this book, all while taking gluten sensitivity into account. I would have liked photographs of finished dishes but otherwise great.
This cookbook is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection. The recipes are easy to read and follow, well written, and give clear concise instructions. They literally bring the tastes of world wide cuisines to the reader. I have tried several and have been impressed with the rich flavors. Highly recommend.

Slight correction to those saying every song is written in its recorded key: "Revolution" is one of the few songs to be recorded twice, the earlier being acoustic-based "Revolution 1" serving as a cut on the White Album, and shortly after as a more electric single B-side (to "Hey Jude"). The former was written and recorded first in the key of A, the latter is in the key of B, and the lead sheet inside this book is inexplicably written in the key of C.I agree though, great book, in that it's a great way to have all of their stuff for under forty bucks. I suppose you could go for "The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook" if you're thrown by standard notation conventions, but this book is spiral bound and lays better than that one. It's not perfect -- in classic Hal Leonard fashion, intros to many songs are missing (anything from a few measures, as in "And I Love Her," to an entire progression and melody, as in "I Am The Walrus"). This is a musician's book. If you're into the Beatles at all, it's a total must have. I have bought this book at least 5 times now over the years.. and there's always a copy in my book bag that I take around to gigs. I've given it to friends, had my piano students get it, and it has saved me more times than I can count on piano bar gigs. Someone requests an obscure Beatles tune? You've got it. As others have stated, the tunes are in the original keys, so playing along with the recordings is a breeze. There's some questionable business going on with the alphabetical organization here and there.. "Helter Skelter" is after "I Feel Fine", and "Let it Be" should be after "Lady Madonna", but is listed pages earlier, before "In My Life".. but things are basically in the right place. And there's an accurate index up front if you need it. It's so darned nice to NOT have to flip pages in the middle of a tune when your hands are busy, and they were careful to have the tunes on just one page or two facing pages to help out with this. The notation is small, but the melodies are easy to read and the chords are right (or at least so close that it's easy to pick out what's missing), and it's slim enough to carry around without taking up your whole bag. The plastic comb binding only puts up with so much abuse before it gives up, but the book is laid out so well and the lead sheets are so nicely transcribed that I'll put up with it. It's a great book, and I'll probably buy it again when my current copy gets too torn up or I give it to somebody...
Just a great Beatles fake book, every song is captured with the right chords to make it sound great. Loads of fun to play, and especially to play along with the original recordings, which brings me to a point that contradicts other reviewers - not all the songs are in the original key. Some need to be transposed up or down 1/2 step. Not a big deal, just be aware.Update 12/29/17: This book is so good it disappeared on me and I had to order another one. Still worth it. Now that the replacement has arrived I expect the original to turn up at any moment :-).
My piano teacher recommended I get a fake book to work on not needing to think about chords, and recommended this one. It's a really good book! Beatles do a lot more with their chords than a lot of pop songs, without many songs that just repeat the same 4 chords, so it's really good for practicing.
I already had several Beatles songbooks but this one is great because it simplifies arrangement enough so that you never have to turn the page to finish a song. Being licensed it does have the correct chords and melody. (For vocal harmonies you will need the bigger books but no points off for that because it *is* a fake book.)
If you are into the Beatles you need this book. Easy too use, lots of songs, all the words, chords and notes....plus they have made allof the notes easy to play and sound like the real thing without all the complications. A must have book to learn and play the Beatles...

The map itself is very good but the paper is too thin, looks very cheap.
It's everything you want in a travel map except information about what's where and how places connect. Ugh! In my opinion it's useless for anything but a companion to LP travel guide.

I am not a professional executive coach. Rather, I am an executive who enjoys and understands the importance of coaching. On the whole, I found this book to be very helpful. You have to read it with the mindset of an executive if that's who you are. It's not that difficult to transform the concepts. The examples were very well done. The templates and suggested structures were very good. My only criticism, is that I found it a bit repetitive. Also, some of the formatting doesn't translate perfectly to a Kindle edition.
This is a coaching resource I keep at my fingertips! I appreciate the author's stand for head AND heart at the core of the coaching process, how to call them forth for my clients and manage them for myself.

When I looked up my date of birth in this book I was surprised by how accurate it was. I then decided to look up family members birthdays and they were quite precise too. This is one of the better birth signs books I've seen.
True story...the first time I read my birthday page was around 2001. I saw a copy at my friend’s house, so I checked it out and was so surprised to find my new boyfriend’s birthday listed in the “soul mate†section, because Geminis and Virgos aren’t supposed to be good love matches. We’d been dating for a couple of months at the time and had a good laugh about it. Then, when we ended up getting married about five years later, we would occasionally remember the book and say it was a sign that we were meant to be together.About a week ago, I went into a coworker’s office and he had a different birthday book on his desk. It reminded me about this book, which I had kind of forgotten about, and I thought it would make a romantic Christmas present for my husband (we’ve been married 13 years now). So I just bought this book, and when it arrived I went back to my birthday page (my hubby’s bday is still listed as my soul mate) and even more stuff has come true! I literally got goose bumps. My birthday page said I would push for a major relationship change at 24, and that’s when I proposed to my husband! On his page, it said he would go through a significant life change at 33, to seek more stability, and that’s when he decided to quit drinking for good, so we could start a family. I was 21 when I read my friend’s copy so none of this stuff had happened when I first read it; I can’t believe how much of this book has proven accurate in my case. I see astrology as kind of just for fun, I don’t take it too seriously most of the time. But this book is something else! I can't wait to see what it says about my two kids.
Weather this book can be viewed as entertaining or to be taken seriously, it is somewhat eerily accurate! How so? Here's why: My birthday is on April 22. Under 'your special someone,' my ex boyfriend fell under 'beneficial.' And his birthday is on April 13. Although he was not the one for me, I benefited from him because he helped me to learn and grow.As for soulmates, I have 2 male friends whose birthdays are in it. One of my guy friends' birthday is on January 17, but sadly he ended our friendship. I still miss him though. Another friend is on February 15, but he's interested in men. Sometimes your soulmate is not the one you may end up marrying. It could be a bestfriend just like my 2 male friends.
For me personally, this book is magical. I’m still “unpacking†lots of the meanings and birthdays. I’m not deep into astrology so the stars are difficult to me. I’ve broken down my understanding of each “Soul Connection†based on birthdays. Tested it out with close friends and family, even past lovers. There’s this close proximity and accuracy that’s either the exact date of a person I know or one up/one down. I’ve also been using my pendulum in combination for clarity.My sister recommended this book and I purchased it gently used, saved $10.
Let me begin by saying I am not super into astrology or numerology. I bought this book as a fun coffee table book and I was not disappointed. Sooner or later all of my visitors end up looking up their birthday and they normally call everyone to attention so they can read "about themselves" out loud to the group. The book has served as a great ice breaker and conversation starter. I think it would be a nice gift. I have gotten a lot of use out of mine
