Parts of this biography were spellbinding and nauseating at the same time. It is a truly fascinating and inspirational life story.That having been said, I must confess that for long sections, the book became tedious in its descriptions of the travails to which Zamperini was subjected. While there were numerous vignettes, it is difficult to write 200 pages of prose in which the only real story is that a man is in a prisoner of war camp and gets brutally beaten with regularity. At a point, you almost become immune to the barbarity, and that is a shame. I do feel that the book could have easily lost over 100 pages without any diminution to Zamperini's legacy.Nevertheless, this biography is both enlightening and inspirational. It is a worthy addition to the history of the pre-war years, the Pacific theater and the years immediately following, through the life and times of a truly unique individual.

I'm a voracious reader. Addicted to reading since I was a young child. I love and read a great deal of history. This book was hands down, one of the best written I've ever read on WWII. Laura Hillenbrand is now as beloved an author to me as Stephen Ambrose. My grandfather spent years in Europe during WWII. My mother tells the story of meeting her father for the first time when he came home after the war. He left when she was a toddler and she has no memories of him before the war. Sadly, there was no information on PTSD in those years. He did his best, but the war broke him in profound ways that would chase all his children and grandchildren through the years. This book has given me great sadness for what all the men suffered, but has also healed a wound. Grandfather didn't hate us all, he was merely dealing with a burden he could never share. Great book. Very well written. I haven't stayed up all night reading in many years, but this book have me that rare pleasure of trading sleep for getting lost in a story.

I generally LOVE lonely planet books, and buy one for every trip I take. Especially for international trips. Unfortunately, this one was not as helpful as others. Some of the recommendations were not accurate or valid. And several of the phone numbers had been disconnected. Still, the maps are correct and helpful, especially in the cities.
Very useful and necessary information. I recomend it if you are traveling to the north. I recommend it if you are traveling north.Please note that it is a guide only, as a base for your trip, but it is always best to know the local people and let them lead the way.

i'm afraid i have to pan this guide. i am here in mozambique and was also here a couple of years ago for 6 weeks. this guide looks like a rush job. there is not a whole lot of info beyond the bare minimum. the author doesn't seem to have spent very much time here. i was looking at someone's bradt guide last week and the difference is amazing. the bradt is twice as big for starters, and the author clearly has spent a lot of time here and knows the country. the maps in the bradt are also better. each entry about a hotel or restaurant has the map coordinates and you can go directly to the map to see where things are. the maps of maputo are generally much better.both guides are pretty much completely absent of information about mozambiquan music, which is an appalling oversite!and another complaint. i decided to download the digital edition and discovered that, contrary to what the web site says, it isn't complete. there is no index and the notes about the author are absent.anyhow, not recommended.
Mozambique has only recently re-opened to tourism, after years of war and bloodshed. Fortunately the hard times are now over, and the country is once again a thriving, wonderful African nation. I loved it all - the people, the food, the music... With this Lonely Planet guide, I was really able to get the most out of my stay. It contains plenty of advice on visiting places, hotels, restaurants, etc. And also great advice on how to save money - indeed, Mozambique can be very expensive ! A country and a book I won't forget.
Excelent travel guide
Lonely Planet books are always interesting to browse through. Most of the time they do stick to giving you the facts about a country and I do appreciate it. However, Lonely Planet's editors often like to mix their left wing politics with travel. The result are sections like "Responsible Tourism" that at best are paternalistic to the reader and at worst wrong. In this section it is suggested that the tourist seek out "locally run and owned" establishments and patronize them instead of foreign owned businesses. First of all if you can tell a foreign owned from a local owned perhaps it's because the standards are different. Secondly, why would you choose a lessor value (weighing in price and quality of the product together) when picking a hotel for instance? Where you stay is part of the experience and it may not be worth residing in some dank crummy hotel for the sake of patronizing a local business. The reason why countries like Mozambique never worked out economically in the past (and now are trying to change) is because their leaders applied the same kind of dim ignorant thinking displayed by Lonely Planet writers.I have traveled to many People's Republics and the idea of a business supplying a valued product to a customer was often lacking. Businesses were simply suppose to provide jobs and no attention to efficiency or quality was made. This is exactly why these economies floundered in the past; they could not make things to market standards, their use of material resources and labor was so poor that they could only pay workers a pittance and could only pawn off their wares to captive populations. A successful economy has businesses that typically concentrate on providing value to the customer first - that is you the traveler. By doing so a business will insure that it employs local people and contributes to the local economy. Demanding that local enterprises match the value of foreign firms will help the country. Local entrepreneurs and workers will adopt the right business standards and work ethics to economically succeed.

Starting with C Vann Woodward's account of this battle, I have on my bookshelf no fewer than 10 other accounts all or part of this battle, some of them by other eminent historians including Evan Thomas and Anthony Tully, Robert Lundgren, and James Hornfischer. plus of course there are other versions incorporated into larger surveys of the Pacific war, going back to Samuel Eliot Morison's multi-volume history of the entire American naval side of WW II. Fought between the juggernaut U.S. Navy and the desperate Imperial Japanese Navy in October, 1944, this battle saw the last attempt by the Japanese to inflict a crushing blow upon the Allies and swing the tides of war back into their favor.John Prados does a wonderful job of setting up the scene for this titanic clash, providing lots of information and detail on the planning which went into the battle, the forces involved, and the commanders calling the shots. He sheds light on the key role the Allied intelligence services played in deciphering Japanese plans and movements, as well as how key decisions in crucial moments came to play a major part in the outcome. Much has been written about the battle from an American standpoint, and this book helps balance things a bit by providing a good look at the Japanese viewpoint. Even though the Japanese faced long odds, they still felt a major victory could stem the Allied tide heading towards their shores. Long an admirer of Mr. Martino’s work, I eagerly awaited the publication of his book. It did not disappoint. Beautifully photographed, it is a nice overview of many stellar projects he created in AZ and Southern CA. The text provides clarity to the design challenges and solutions. I highly recommend this book for the general reader as well as landscape architects.
I had heard of Steve through the Phx Desert Botanical Garden (I believe he was a Speaker?) as I recently moved to Phoenix. This man is a genius because he treads so lightly when creating gardens or remodeling homes for his Clients. He doesn’t create more debris, he eliminates it, which is so unusual. I read the book, cover to cover, in one sitting, and can’t wait to read it again. There’s much to learn, but it’s not a step by step. For ex., the way he situated an overhead screen to allow morning light but block afternoon sun. Sounds simple, but when you see how he did it, very creative. If you live in Phoenix, Palm Springs or Tucson, this book needs to be in your collection.
I found this book while looking for inspiration for my sloping front yard in Los Angeles. The photos are wonderful, and Mr Martino's observations are very helpful to understand why he makes the choices that he has made. Many of the plants are named in the captions, but most of them are reused throughout his projects, so it helps if you recognize them by sight. There are other books out there that are catalogs for desert plants, but only Steve Martino can show us how to use them as an artist. The use of richly colored plaster walls with the plant choices is absolutely fantastic!
This has to be the most beautiful book on landscape architecture I have ever owned. Thank you for being an inspiration & creative voice in the profession.

Very clear design principles. Not hostile to the environment. Many hardscape examples can be applied to non-desert plans too. Martino is a standout! Only reason I don’t give five stars is due to slightly wonky binding on my copy.
