Fought between the juggernaut U.S. Navy and the desperate Imperial Japanese Navy in October, 1944, this battle saw the last attempt by the Japanese to inflict a crushing blow upon the Allies and swing the tides of war back into their favor.John Prados does a wonderful job of setting up the scene for this titanic clash, providing lots of information and detail on the planning which went into the battle, the forces involved, and the commanders calling the shots. He sheds light on the key role the Allied intelligence services played in deciphering Japanese plans and movements, as well as how key decisions in crucial moments came to play a major part in the outcome. Much has been written about the battle from an American standpoint, and this book helps balance things a bit by providing a good look at the Japanese viewpoint. Even though the Japanese faced long odds, they still felt a major victory could stem the Allied tide heading towards their shores. Prados examines the Japanese commanders, forces and decisions in great detail, thus helping the reader understand they hows and whys of their actions. Long an admirer of Mr. Martino’s work, I eagerly awaited the publication of his book. It did not disappoint. Beautifully photographed, it is a nice overview of many stellar projects he created in AZ and Southern CA. The text provides clarity to the design challenges and solutions. I highly recommend this book for the general reader as well as landscape architects.
I had heard of Steve through the Phx Desert Botanical Garden (I believe he was a Speaker?) as I recently moved to Phoenix. This man is a genius because he treads so lightly when creating gardens or remodeling homes for his Clients. He doesn’t create more debris, he eliminates it, which is so unusual. I read the book, cover to cover, in one sitting, and can’t wait to read it again. There’s much to learn, but it’s not a step by step. For ex., the way he situated an overhead screen to allow morning light but block afternoon sun. Sounds simple, but when you see how he did it, very creative. If you live in Phoenix, Palm Springs or Tucson, this book needs to be in your collection.
I found this book while looking for inspiration for my sloping front yard in Los Angeles. The photos are wonderful, and Mr Martino's observations are very helpful to understand why he makes the choices that he has made. Many of the plants are named in the captions, but most of them are reused throughout his projects, so it helps if you recognize them by sight. There are other books out there that are catalogs for desert plants, but only Steve Martino can show us how to use them as an artist. The use of richly colored plaster walls with the plant choices is absolutely fantastic!

Must read for every man out there.My upbringing did not do me a favour. This opened my eyes to see the world completely different and my role I have to play in it. I am much more comfortable with myself and it improved every area in my life.Biggest influence in the shortest time ever in my marriage. Best part is that I did not tell my wife to behave differently. The improvement in my marriage happened naturally.We did not go to counselling like before, we did not try to improve our communication, we did not spend more time together, I did not buy more gifts, I did not do more chores in the house. I had to become a Man.Still some hard and dirty work to do on myself. But WOW......I see the results that I love.
My biggest complaint with the book that drove me nuts the entire time was the lack of evidence based arguments. Tomasi would state that some study showed x, but then it is not referenced and the study is barely described. I found maybe one or two points in the book where he actually did do this. But a book like this should have at least 50-100 sources to back up these claims. He used his credentials of an undergraduate degree, which is essentially useless, in lieu of having to do that. He also uses buzzwords to make it sound more scientific, but he scarified flow and clarity in doing so. Really unnecessary and made him sound like a novice writer. There were also a number of spelling errors and editing issues that needed to be addressed before this saw the light of day.I agree with the content because I've read many other books in the domain of evolutionary biology, so Tomasi isn't entirely wrong in the content. Which is good. However, if you want to be legitimate and make the sort of claims you are making, you need to back them up with solid science. And show where those references are from. This was an attempt by a blogger, who lacked formal training in writing and research, to sound legitimate. Ironically, this is exactly what feminists do, they make claims that support some confounded idea without any evidence based arguments to back it up. If you want to be better than them, you need to improve on your writing and research. I would recommend other books before this one or I would supplement this book with say 'The Red Queen: Sex and Evolution' or 'Mating Mind'. This isn't terrible and could be a nice entry point for further study, but further study is absolutely necessary.
I’m 53. I wish this book had been available to me as a young man starting out 30 plus years ago. So many of the pitfalls of dating and relationships could have been avoided. I have to warn prospective readers of one thing: you will never see the world in the same way again. This can be massively uncomfortable at times, particularly in a marriage. That being said, the discomfort is well worth it. On to books 2 and 3. Thanks, Rollo.
I was recommended this book from a friend not out of necessity but because he knew I would actually have an open mind when reading it. Over the course of the last year I've read over 20 books and this is my favorite to date.Some theories that Rollo suggests may cause shock and even piss you off and cause you to stop reading it altogether. But I feel it is a must read for any man trying to improve himself both personally and professionally.I will say be careful about who you speak to the theories of this book with. Not everyone is ready to be unplugged from the "Matrix" and you might be met with some resistance and may even cause insecurities to come out from those less enlightened to hear what you have to say.
I purchased this book because I had received many recommendations, claiming that this book is offering invaluable, often overlooked, and not understood insight into relationships. However, this philosophy is nothing new. It is the same red-pill, incel, etc. nonsense which claims to have some secret, innovative, genius-level knowledge about the biological instincts of women, despite the frequent inability of the author to spell words correctly and use proper grammar.Perhaps this is helpful for men who hate women, and thus feel that all women are out to get them and make the "nice guys" care for the children of the females' previous "alpha" partners, claiming women seek men purely for their financial value. But, for someone seeking genuine relationship advice that is not based on some pseudo-scientific, crackpot, paleolithic conception of human relationships, you should probably look elsewhere.

When "On the media" interviewed the author I paused the podcast about half-way through and ordered the book--and even ordered it in print because I knew I wanted to be able to share it--something we can't do effectively with licensed content (eformat) As a librarian who is equal parts copyright geek and open access advocate this reads almost like a thriller. What never gets enough attention is the context of the American Enlightenment and its role, along that of James Madison, in the writing of Constitution and Bill of Rights but it was delightful to see the parallels between the brilliant, intense and socially awkward Webster and Swartz. I'm not sure if that was intentional or that a certain personality type is more likely to be a change-agent. If you're a copyright geek and an open access fan this might not contain a lot of new material but it's a great read. If you're only familiar with one part of the equation or, neither, it's a great read and a great introduction.
The compelling story of Aaron Swartz--the hacktivist who wanted to make public documents freely available as they should be. Justin is a great author who provides colorful detail regarding the circumstances of Aaron's death while being targeted by the US Government.
Inspired me to do things for my community, and i now have a heck-of-a-lot of appreciation for public libraries. Swartz is a hero.

With The Idealist, Justin Peters manages to do the unthinkable: he transforms the history of American copyright into an intensely engaging – and even, at times, entertaining - read that springs forth from the page. I, like many in the aftermath of Aaron Swartz’s suicide, read the many online tributes and treatises on his life and untimely death, and what his radical actions in the name of making information freely and widely available represented, both to those who supported him in his quest and those who did not. (Peters’ own excellent piece, written for Slate in 2013, from which this book developed, stood out as the most well-researched and well-written of all those that I read.) However, it was not until I read The Idealist that I fully understood the historical context that framed and influenced Swartz and his journey, nor that I fully grasped that even now, nearly three years to the day after his death, we as a country are no closer to addressing the many questions and institutional deficiencies that contributed to it.Brilliantly written and expertly researched, The Idealist is more than a biography, and more than a history. It does what all great nonfiction should: it challenges us to look at issues both central to our daily lives and greater than ourselves, and consider their impact on those who came before and those who will come after us.
