Adequate but not practical as a quick reference tourist guide. Too much historical detail and special group or types of people info. Rick Steves pocket guide is much better for quick reference to basic how, where, when info. Actually love the Eye Witness Paris book better because it has a lot of pictures and illustrations that help me to visualize the quarters and district very quickly. However, due to the high quality of paper and binding, the Eye Witness book is not practical for actual travel or carrying around Paris. If you don't mind wading thru a lot of detailed info and need special info for children or other special groups, this book would be the book to have. The print is small and not easy for me to read or for reference, but as a full coverage type of book, it is very good.
A narcissistic, obsessive, disconnected meditation by an author who seems to have collected random tidbits related to water, and/or swimming in his literary and geographic travels/imagination. It contains strong 'undertones' of pedophilia, the 'beauty' of suicide, the pains (and delights) of being gay, and long paragraphs with many non-sequiturs. It is loaded with casual name dropping of persons who are not described as to profession, age, any aspect of their life, or how they fit the narrative, other than in the author's mind. He has a 'unique' definition of swimming, which is then constantly modified by his many, briefly discussed, literary or athletic figures. Many discussions of languid times/fantasies spent admiring and wishing to touch the bodies of the very young, although always safely observed from a distance. I read a book a week, am very literary, and always finish, no matter how painful. This one required an exhausting, 20 pages a day schedule, to survive it. Worst book I've bought in years.
The information listed on where to go, or what to see was above average to excellent. The resturants were sublime. The maps were a flipping nightmare. I don’t use Google. I use paper maps. These maps had keys over Street names and didn’t overlap so you could follow from each chapter. If you get to Paris, grab a free Printemps map and mark it up with the good suggestions in the book, or get out your electronic gadgets to figure out directions.
Like all Rough Guides, this one is for travelers, not tourists. It includes tons of information about the city's neighborhoods and how to explore them. Listings of accommodations, shops and restaurants are much less complete. The vibe of the book is quite young -- there's more about hostels, campgrounds and cheap meals than this old lady and independent traveler needs to know, but I'm sure the detailed information on nightlife and LGBT venues are useful to many. Still, I love the personal, non-touristy aspect of these books. A Rough Guide plus a conventional book like Fodor or Frommer's and I'm all set.
My wife and I used this for our recent trip to Paris. We found it to be our favorite source of information over all of the other travel guides we looked at. The information was very current, and the tips for things to do were great. Highly recommend this one.
Very good, but Paris is so full of activities that the book would have to be twice as thick and still would not cover everything.
Paris is difficult. This guide helps to unravel the chaos.
I've relied on Rough Guides for over 25 years. They are current and yes, opinionated. That's good. Rather than relying on reputation or received wisdom, the writing team tells it as they see it. Very helpful for knowing what's worth the money and what isn't. I've always liked their sensibilities.

I enjoyed the book because Norman J. James covered his entirelife's story. Like everyone, his experiences had it's ups and downs.Coming from a humble background, putting himself through oneof the best design schools in the country, Pratt, getting a designjob at GM and designing the most awe inspiring vehicle in the last100 years, in the first few years Norm was out of college. I alsoworked at GM Styling in the early 1960's for GM Executive,Robert F. McLean, as Norm did.The first time I walked into GM Styling Research Studio's inter-officeand saw the Norm James painting of Firebird III, being hoisted intothe bay of a rocket ship, it was inspiring. (Illustrated on page 127 inthe book.) I was stimulated by the shear dynamics of the vehicle, withthe road wheels folding inward into the under belly of the vehicle. Yearslater, when people asked what options did I order on my new car, Iwould respond, I ordered everything, but retractable landing gear.GM's Styling Research Studio, was mostly composed of engineersthat could draw and a few outstanding designers of Norm's caliber.Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel engineers and later human factors engineerswere all part of GM's Styling Research Studio. All of GM'sExperimental Gas Turbine vehicles were developed by the GM StylingResearch Studio. Including Firebird I, Firebird II, and Firebird III,and Norm was working on the Chevrolet Bison Class 8 Gas Turbine Truckfor the 1964-1965 New York Worlds Fair, when I was there.Norm was one of those lucky people, he was at the right place at theright time. But Norm also made his own luck happen by hard work onhis part, and he not only designed but he also help build the mostdramatic vehicle of the 20th Century, Firebird III, and he will alwaysbe remembered for that.Del C. Schroeder
This book provides an excellent account of the creation of the Firebird III. Of course that should be expected since the book is written by one of the designers of this unique concept car. There are details here I never found in any other work about this car. It was a very useful source while writing my book, "Motorama: GM's Legendary Show and Concept Cars."
About 1/4th of this book was interesting to me, the chapters about the author's work at General Motors on the Firebird II and III. The rest was about how industrial design was taught at the Pratt Institute in the early 1950's, building telescopes, and designing vehicles for the space program. The chapters on the Firebirds are presented in excruciating detail with no trivial fact left out. The project is presented in isolation with little explanation of how it related to the two previous Firebirds or how styling cues from the Firebirds showed up on future GM cars. The Pontiac Club del Mar is mentioned many times but there is no photograph of it. There is also no unobstructed side view photograph of the Firebird III, only crowded snapshots. I finally found one on the net and sat in front of my computer as I read. This is about the least interesting book on American automotive design available.
Nice book(sadly no color photos except cover, all are b&w) book, I have the softcover, the book could be a little boring and too technical at times, especially given the author's background, who is a very good designer and very intelligent. The book itself in the first few chapters tells about the author's upbringing, his school days, and then finally the good stuff, The GM firebird! which Is why I brought the book!(that is my bias!) and moon rover vehicles. It is a interesting read.
Of Firebirds & Moonmen: A designer's story from the Golden Ageby Norman J JamesIf you were a newly-minted designer in the 1950s, the place you would want to go to work would be General Motors. Legendary Harley Earl ran his design division as his own private fiefdom, and his Knight's Errant were his designers. Assuming you were lucky and talented enough to become a part of Earl's design staff, what could be better than to be chosen to create a gas turbine-powered concept car for the General Motors Motorama? That was the position Norman James found himself in when the 25 year-old designer was put in charge of the Firebird III project in 1957.James grew up in western part of New York State, his nerdy childhood filled with model rockets and homemade telescopes. He attended the well-regarded Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and in the summer before his senior year was chosen as a design intern at General Motors. As these things happen, he ended up working on the Firebird II concept car under Bob McLean, and rather than return to Pratt for his senior year was asked to stay on working for GM. James managed to commute between Detroit and New York to finish his degree and work full-time at Design Staff.Having worked on Firebird II, James was a natural choice for the Firebird III project. It was during this time that he met many of the men who would succeed Harley Earl to become the greats and near-greats of GM styling and the world of automotive design. Of Firebirds & Moonmen is filled with names like McLean, Bill Mitchell, Chuck Jordan, Stan Mott, Robert Cumberford and Stefan Habsburg, people who provided GM's vision into the 1960s and beyond. Having lived with the Firebird III for more than two years--drawing its distinctive shape, creating its body, working with engineering staff to produce drivable prototypes and becoming involved in the filming of the vehicle for its debut--we can sympathize with James' disappointment when he isn't invited to come to New York for the 1959 Motorama at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.Norman James' career took an interesting turn when, in 1963, he moved to the GM Defense Research Laboratories in Santa Barbara, California to work on lunar vehicles for the space program. The author includes many of his early sketches and drawings for lunar rovers and it is easy to see the evolution that ultimately led to the lunar exploration vehicles that Apollo astronauts took to the moon. James ended his design career working in the aerospace industry, including work on the Lockheed-Martin X-33 lifting body program.Of Firebirds & Moonmen isn't a book for everyone. The author's memory for the details of his life is impressive, but perhaps not every reader will want to know the details of each apartment the up-and-coming designer lived in or his favorite place to eat. However, when the details concern the design process at General Motors and the intricacies of projects like the Firebird III, we are fortunate for the power of his reminisces. Unfortunately, the book has no index, making quick access to those interesting tidbits inconvenient.Ultimately, what Of Firebirds & Moonmen creates is a record of what it was like to be a designer during GM's golden age. It is a memoir whose author was there when it happened and whose life, in all of its detail, provides a glimpse of how what was then the world's largest company produced some of its most iconic designs.Copyright 2009, Kevin Clemens (speedreaders.info)

This Great Book has just been republished and so you can now get it at a much more reasonable price, than at $100's of dollars. In this incredibly important book, you get the opportunity to follow along with the author, Robert McLuhan, as he examines much of the evidence in a number of areas of the paranormal. Some the paranormal events he looks are Ghosts/hauntings, visits from apparitions, Mediums, seances, OBEs, NDEs, reincarnation, children remembering past lives, remote viewing, Card guessing experiments, the sense of being stared at, Psychic animals and moreIf you, like I, have been reading lots of the information about various paranormal events, You find that this book help to bring lots of it together and puts forward many thought provoking ideas to Consider. In This book as well as looking at some of the evidence you get a great overview of some of the different paranormal events happing on the planet, that when all taken together becomes a huge pile of evidence that is hard to ignore if you are willing to look at it.Robert call himself an agnostic and that he does not want to be convinced that the paranormal is true, particularly reincarnation.Quote from Page 1"I saw myself more as a free-thinking agnostic than a committed atheist, as I believe many scientists themselves do."Quote from Page 281I’d have to add that the idea of reincarnation, more than some other things we have been looking at, fills me with apprehension, as I think it does to many people, and I’d be relieved if I thought Stevenson’s claims could be adequately explained away. This book is for someone who has an open mind and is willing to look at all the different angles, because most sceptics will not be convinced this book is not for them.Quote from Page 239"Mayer cites the case of an individual who peer-reviewed an article on remote viewing that had been submitted to an engineering journal, stating that it was methodologically impeccable and that he could find no reason to reject it, but still recommending that it not be published, as it was the kind of thing he would personally not believe in even if it existed.I found this book particularly useful, I have read, or heard about many of the examples in the book, and had my own sceptical reaction. In following along with the Author as he first finds the material unbelievable but with further study becomes convinced that there is something to all of the evidence accumulated over the years. One often cited reason why the sceptics don't have to believe the evidence is that they claim that there is a large number of unpublished reports, the so called bottom drawer problem, when the experiments failed.Quote from Page 200"Critics might counter that it would be neutralized if all the data were included, on the assumption that studies with negative results were never published. But Dean Radin calculates that for this to happen there would have to be twenty-three such studies for every known one, requiring continuous activity for thirty-six years – an utterly implausible idea."Most sceptic don't even read the evidence, maybe part of them knows that if they want to hold onto their martial world view that they don't dare read any of it but need to be thoroughly scathing in there response to any presentation of anything slightly paranormal. As Robert points out if someone manages to convince a sceptic, all the other sceptics treat them as though they have gone over to the other side. If, for example some convinced Randi of the reality of the paranormal he may hand over the Million bucks, but then all the sceptics would consider him a fool.Quote from Page 58... consider what would have happened if Randi had observed at first hand the events at the Resch household, and come out bewildered by what he had seen. No question, he might have said, I was wrong – there really are psychic forces of which I had no conception. Tina, my child, here’s the cheque. Spend it wisely. Even if this fanciful scenario were one day to be played out, nothing would change. It would make headlines briefly but would not convert sceptics all over the world into believers. Its only lasting effect would be to end Randi’s career as a debunker: he would be written off as an elderly man who has finally succumbed to the madness of paranormal belief. For me this book helped me to understand why the sceptics are not convinced.I grew up with a materialist view of the world and when I started to read about NDE and other stuff I was always wondering what the sceptic saw/knew which kept them as unbelievers. Was there more information that I was missing, was I being fooled, but I now know it is the sceptic who are missing information because they won't even look at any of the evidence. If you have a world view, and don't want to change it it behooves you to NOT look at anything that might convince you to change.I could say if you want to keep you world view "Don't Read this book" but I don't think you need to be concerned as if you want to keep not believing in the paranormal you would have already left this page, and probably never came here in the 1st place. As the Robert says on Page 6On a matter such as this, one is not – and perhaps should not be – persuaded by a single book. Until you achieve a solid foundation any conviction I leave you with will be temporary, easily undone by the next article or review you come across that blandly reaffirms the paranormal to be a lot of nonsense. As I’ll suggest, orthodoxy exertsa gravitational pull in this respect, although we may not recognize it as such.I Highly Recommend this book, and would give it more than 5 stars if I could.See this review at soulfulbooks.home.blog/2019/03/14/randis-prize/

Review
“Ginsburg has used her words to promote equality and stem discrimination as well as to express gratitude and to celebrate others who did so before and with her. . . . exceedingly readable, thanks to Ginsburg’s characteristically precise and unembellished prose.” (Newsweek)“At the heart of My Own Words is an abiding commitment to civility, to institutional norms, to the infinite possibilities of dialogue and cooperation, and to the now-dubious notion that protecting outsiders and others is a core American value. . . . Above all, always in her own methodical way, what shines through these essays is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, feminist, who truly could not conceive of a world without meaningful gender parity in the 1970s . . . as a collection of thoughtful writing about perseverance and community and the law, it is a tonic to the current national discourse.” (The Washington Post)"A comprehensive look inside her brilliantly analytical, entertainingly wry mind, revealing the fascinating life of one of our generation's most influential voices in both law and public opinion." (Harper's Bazaar)“A sort of greatest hits album....devotees will no doubt be delighted to have some 300 pages of Ginsburg all in one place.” (Associated Press)"The Notorious RBG makes it even harder to ponder her eventual absence with a look at gender inequality, the Supreme Court’s inner workings, and the too-little-remarked-upon intersections of law and opera." (New York Magazine)"What emerges is not a portrait of a take-no-prisoners advocate but a strategic legal plotter who understands how to bring her audience around to her point of view." (USA Today)"The selection showcases her astonishing intellectual range, from law and lawyers in opera, to tributes to Louis Brandeis, William Rehnquist, and Gloria Steinem, to the significance and form of dissenting opinions. The book also includes a number of revealing speeches Ginsburg has given about her historical heroines . . . Hartnett and Williams’s brief biographical introductions to each section show how much Ginsburg has heeded it." (The New Republic)"Readers will gain unprecedented insight into the inner workings of the Supreme Court and garner unparalleled appreciation for one of its finest minds.” (Booklist)“A collection of her writings that will offer even more. . . . Justice Ginsburg’s impact not only on the legal profession but also on young women contemplating such a career path is undeniable.” (Library Journal)"Much recommended as a Christmas gift for smart, ambitious nieces. And nephews, too." (The Guardian)

We have recently been treated to a host of books and articles on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Forthcoming is an authorized biography by the two Georgetown Law professor editors of this collection of Ginsburg writing, as well as one by Teri Kanefield. In my opinion, no matter how many bios and articles you read about the Justice, your understanding of this remarkable lawyer and judge will be incomplete if you don't also review this collection of material authored by the Justice, spanning her life since the eighth grade. I really felt I came closest to understanding both the professional and personal Ginsburg from this book. The book has many merits. It affords an insight into how the Supreme Court operates and decides cases; provides us with highly personal and quite moving profiles of Chief Justice Rehnquist and her great friend--and adversary--Justice Scalia; reminds us of her pioneering role as the champion of women's rights as author, professor, and deadly litigator; and not least, helps us understand the private Ginsburg through several appearances by her late husband, tax lawyer Marty Ginsburg. Ginsburg speaks for herself in 36 or so pieces, skillfully tied together and placed in context by the two editors. The book is divided into five sections. For example, "Early Years" surprised me with a Ginsburg essay written while an undergrad at Cornell on the evils of wiretapping, reflecting the influence of her mentor, the constitutional scholar Robert E. Cushman. In Part Two, "Tributes to Waypavers and Pathmarkers," Ginsburg reveals a remarkable talent for writing short profiles of prominent legal and judicial figures, including Belva Lockwood, Louis Brandeis, Judah P. Benjamin (a fascinating figure; look him up), Breyer, Cardozo, and especially Sandra Day O'Connor. Nobody can pack more info into a short piece than Ginsburg. The central focus of her professional career as advocate and judge, gender equality, is the focus of Part Three. Symposium introductions; defense of the ERA; her bench announcement in the VMI case; and several summer presentations to summer law students abroad make up this section. One should never forget the impact her unceasing determination had in moving the whole idea of gender equality into the spotlight. Ironically, as is well known, she remains unhappy with the Roe opinion, preferring not to rest it upon privacy but upon straight equality grounds. Part IV has some interesting material on her role as a judge and appointment to the Court. The final section provides an insight into her views of judging and justice. She explains the Court's workways and why she is so dedicated to judicial independence. She defends effectively the role foreign legal concepts can play for the Justices--a hot item with Scalia, while being promoted by Breyer. She articulates the idea of "measured motions," which basically means don't go too far in an opinion in pushing a point. Most interesting, she explains her view of dissents and dissent announcements, an unusual practice in which she has recently engaged. Finally, she shares her most recent second circuit report on Supreme Court highlights for the 2015-16 term; she gives such reports each year and it is quite interesting to read her candid comments. One of the major reactions I came away with is how well she can write in no matter what format--a point quite obvious from her incisive opinions. The book runs some 370 pages, including chronology, helpful photos, notes and index. My only problem with the book is that the editors have chosen to relegate most notes (which I read religiously) to a webpage (see "A Note on Sources"). No matter how hard I tried, i could not locate these notes, and I am inclined to think such a separation of notes from text is not a good idea for it diminishes the ability to ingest the notes as you read. But the book itself is magnificent, whether you are a Ginsburg fan or not. At 83, this veteran of cancer flirtations, wars with Scalia, and many hard battles, has said she will remain on the Court as long as she meets her own stringent standards. For that, we can all be thankful.
First I'd say that I'm a moderate in my political views and with this book you do not need to be a liberal to enjoy it. I've been a fan of Ruth Ginsburg since her appointment in the 90s. Her tell of being the 2nd woman appointed and her relationship with Justice O'Connor and the friendship with the late Justice Anthony Scalia. There are funny parts to the book detailing her wit and charm. It was amazing to find out that she sleeps very little when in court is in session and that she doesn't cook (her family prepares homemade frozen entrees for her). The book is 400 pages long but well laid out and allows the reader to skip around and read at your leisure. There are a few black and white pictures and pictures on notes she wrote. I usually only read digital books these days but this is a nice book to own and keep in your library. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Members of the legal profession are likely to get more from this book than those who are not. Our book club, comprised of many professions, divided along these lines. Many redundant areas - if you're not seeing the legal specificity. Very interesting on the personal level and for the cogency of her remarks given in a wide variety of venues. Understanding the trajectory of her career is awe inspiring, as is the familial relationships.
Inspirational. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a force of nature -- and all Americans owe her a big debt of gratitude for what she has done to uphold democratic principles. She is absolutely tireless, exists on very little sleep, survived 2 different types of cancer, and works out with a trainer to keep fit at age 84 and counting.
GREAT book, documenting speeches, writings, and accomplishments. If you are interested in a biography, this book is not for you. If you want a solid understanding of RBG's work, this is the perfect choice!
I truly appreciate how Bader Ginsburg has served her country. Her wisdom and judgements have helped us grow. Unfortunately, the editing and intentions of this book relied so heavily on the legal verbiage that we lost some of Ginsburg's sparkle.
For some reason I missed that this is not a personally written memoir so much as her previously published work. Which is fine, I'm DEFINITELY interested in that too, but it is something to pick up while drinking a tea and then leaving for a while instead of plowing through it in a few days. Picking my way through.
Perhaps I misunderstood the title, but while Justice RBG is a brilliant and interesting woman, I found reading her speeches and articles very boring.
