Such a complex story, so many deep emotions, and such great God lessons set against the impossibly capricious and precarious times of the rising and waning Babylonian empire. Themes of faithfulness to Yahweh, the strength of love, HIS forgiveness, restoration with family, secrets, and so much more. My heart is so full, I would urge anyone with an interest in Biblical history to read Andrews’ well-researched and amazingly crafted account of Daniel.One of the themes I found most applicable to my life: What is more important? Personal comfort or following God’s Will? Ouch!!Quote(The heart-rending cry of many a parent, including myself):“ ‘I failed to convince the people I love most that Yahweh is real.’‘You have not failed, and you can’t convince them. Only Yahweh can work in a heart to help those we love to believe. We must simply love them with an honest and transparent heart.’ “I received a complimentary copy of this book from Waterbrook-Multnomah. I am not required to leave a positive review and all opinions are solely my own.
I love this authors commitment to biblical truth in her fictional stories. I love that they are filled with the Word of God and that ultimately the truth of that Word is what guides her story. My favorite thing about reading one of her stories is going back to the Bible afterwards, I find I have a clearer picture of the people I'm reading about and what their peripheral lives might have looked like. Ultimately many of these details won't be known until we hear them from the mouths of those who lived it but until I'm face to face in eternity I will continue to enjoy these wonderful speculations. Thank you Mesu for sharing your gift!
This was the first book I've read by this author and enjoyed it very much. Every time I would sit down to read for 30 minutes, it would turn into over an hour to find out what was going to happen next to the characters. The story of Daniel was one that I was familiar with, but the telling of the story from Belili's perspective kept things interesting. I found the characters well written and the entire story engaging. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.~I received an advance reader copy from the publisher for my honest review of the material. All opinions are my own
Biblical fiction is my most favorite genre, and Mesu is one of my most favorite authors. I have read a number of Mesu’s works, and have loved every single one. She is such a stellar writer, and her research is impeccably done. But what I love the most about Mesu’s books is that she is so willing to tackle the hard stories of the Bible. She does so honestly, respectfully, realistically, and in a manner that proves she really has a BIG heart for Jesus. Of Fire and Lions is a superb novel that deftly illustrates life during the Babylonian exile. I admit to being totally mesmerized and slightly terrified the entire time I was reading. And, best of all, this novel had me doing a bit of soul searching — exactly what a Biblical novel should do!When I read the Bible, I’m always inspired by and in awe of God’s chosen people. The Bible is filled with men and women who are fantastic examples of grit, strength, zeal for God, and a steadfastness that seems unshakable. I’m encouraged by characters like Joseph, Moses, Esther, and Daniel. I attempt to glean from their stories ways I can be a better christian, but I do have to admit that many times I feel I could never measure up. I think about what I would do or say if I was in Joseph’s, Moses’s, Esther’s, or Daniel’s sandals, and I’m afraid I wouldn’t be as brave and courageous as they were. Daniel has always been, to me, one of the most intimidating figures in the Bible. He goes through terrifying ordeals, yet he never seems to waiver. He appears to be perfect in his trust and faith in Yahweh. Is this the truth though? Did he really never question or fear? Did he never get frustrated or angry at God?One of the reasons I LOVE Of Fire and Lions is because Mesu made Daniel real. In this novel, he does have moments of confusion, insecurities, doubt, and fear. Yeah, he’s Daniel and his faith is unwavering, but in this story I see a man who feels things the way I might feel if I were taken captive into an unknown land by a brutal and cruel man. Daniel’s thoughts and questions resemble thoughts and questions I had when I went through scary times myself. And, the way Mesu envisions how Daniel feels when he’s taken to the lion’s den — the terror one feels when facing a brutally scary unknown — was like looking in the mirror. I don’t ever want someone to feel so frightened by fear they’re almost paralyzed, but it is nice to know I’m not the only one on this earth who struggles with fear. I really appreciated seeing Daniel as a man with normal feelings, thoughts, and insecurities instead of the seemingly perfect prophet one sees in the Bible.I highlighted and made notes on half of this book. So many topics and ideas resonated with me, but there is one question that Daniel poses to his child that struck me hard. At one point, when discussing the return of a remnant to Jerusalem, Daniel asks his daughter, “Can you give up your comfortable routine to live in the tension of God’s uncharted plan?†What a FABULOUS question! I finished reading this novel over 24 hours ago, but I’m still fretting over this question. I would LOVE to say, “Yes!â€, but I’m not sure I can and that scares me a little. Not being able to immediately say yes to this question means I have some idols in my life, and that shames me a bit. I can’t say, as I sit her typing this post, that I am fully resolved on this issue, but I very much appreciate that Mesu’s novel allowed for such self-reflection. This is definitely something I am going to have to work on and talk to Jesus about for some time.Of Fire and Lions is an amazing novel. There is SO much more I could talk about, but I don’t want to spoil a thing. Suffice to say, I really appreciate the new insight I gained into the life of one of the coolest humans in the Bible. And, being able to self-reflect as I did makes this novel a Biblical fiction gem. I highly, highly recommend this stellar novel.I received a review copy of this novel in eBook and paperback form from the author via her publisher, WaterBrook. The eBook was supplied via NetGalley. I've been using this book very frequently for about two years now. I had been borrowing the book from a library for a while and finally bought the book a year ago because it proved invaluable to my studies.I wanted to start off, first and foremost point out for anyone simply glancing over the reviews, this textbook is NOT a good resource for learning with no prior background or introduction to the material. This textbook IS an incredibly useful aid for people looking to supplement existing knowledge, or learn to expand on what they may all ready know. I also image if this book was used within a course that with an instructor giving a lecture, this book would be quite good additional material.I used this book as both an engineering and physics student, and outside my studies for personal projects, but never for a course that required the text. About a third of this book proved to be an excellent aid to electrical/computer engineering courses which focus on signal processing, series analysis and transform analysis. While the book doesn't specifically apply the information to that topic, it presents the mathematics used in a clear, incredibly forward way, and helped solidify knowledge on the topic that wasn't able to be presented as in depth in the time allotted by courses, or in the course textbooks.For any physics students in wave mechanics courses/quantum mechanic courses, this textbook is more than ideal. Aside from the entire chapter devoted to PDEs in quantum mechanics, the whole book contains several chapters and hundreds of pages on relevant derivations of core functions and equations, (Bessel, lagrange polynomials, etc) and approaches things you may have already known from a purely mathematical perspective, in which physics courses may have failed to fully explain. For anyone using Griffith's Introduction to Quantum mechanics textbook, this PDE book really fills in the gaps in the math in the Griffiths text.Overall, this is a great book for people already comfortable with differential equations and higher math, engineering or physics students in relevant fields, and anyone looking to add supplementary material on PDEs to their knowledge. For anyone who is not already at least slightly familiar with the topics of PDEs, fourier series analysis, transforms, etc, this book may not be for you. Many example problems are left without clear resolution, so the reader has to decide on their own how accurate they think they are in solving the examples. There are also some unclear steps taken in solving certain problems that in a few cases, create more confusion than they resolve. Aside from this, many examples ( about 75%) are in fact good and easy to follow. Based on this information, hopefully you can decide if this is a good book for you.
I was leery at first about the authors' choice to introduce applications for material not theoretically covered until later chapters (Fourier series, Bessel functions, etc.). But it didn't make the presentation less effective overall. Just made me like I was learning the dance moves before knowing where the stage was. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars because I felt it could have a number of small improvements:- better coding problems or tutorials (these are PDEs after all)- more thorough answers (yes, yes, I know this is used at universities...but university students aren't the only people who get to review books)- paperback? seriously?I felt this was a great introduction to PDEs (if you can manage to keep the cover from getting shred up or bent to heck and back).
I used this as the main text in my advanced differential equations class. I highly recommend it, it's complete in the sense that the book holds a lot of information, several semesters worth and I expect to use it as a resource in the coming years. There are many problems to work out which is always a bonus.I wish Dover would make a hardcover edition even if it was 20 bucks more.
I am an aerospace engineering graduate moving on to a masters program in the fall. I purchased this book because my degree program did not include a class geared specifically toward solving partial differential equations analytically. This book provides a great transition from solving ordinary differential equations to solving partial differential equations, as well as covering the situations that they arise in physics and engineering. I was able to follow the text on my own and answer a number of questions I had upon completion of my undergraduate studies, as well deepen my understanding of complex analysis and conformal mapping.My one complaint for this text is that there are a number of very important concepts left to the reader to discover on their own via the exercises. Most of these exercise problems walk you through the problem, but a few simply leave it up to the reader to "figure it out." This is probably the best way to learn if you have the same amount of time that the founding mathematicians did when they made such discoveries, but I would have preferred a few more explanations in the body of the text. With that said, if this book is used in the classroom, I am sure the professor and teaching assistant can make up for this discrepancy (I just wasn't fortunate enough to be in that position).

I'm an engineering student and this is easily one of the most student-friendly math books I've ever encountered! It's a little more narrative than most and easier to follow. I definitely recommend this!

Most of the content is focused in manually building containers from the command line. Dockerfiles are barely covered and only with tiny, non real world examples. It is the same with linking containers, docker-compose is almost an afterthought., at the very end of the book, after you have read 30 examples that would would never use already.The only close to real word examples are related to getting wordress running. If you are looking for best practices in containerizing a web app, doing ML or solving a specific problem, then sadly you will not find it here.If you are new to docker, you should read 'docker deep dive' before this. If you don't, then I would recommend reading Chaper 8 of this book first, then section 3, then finishing section 2, then finally skim over section 1 that is exclusively hand building containers from the CLI and contains way too much fluff opinion and fringe cases and non docker topics.I can only imagine anyone completely new to docker would finish this book bewildered and unsure of even the standard way to build a basic container (Dockerfile). Many common patterns are not covered all, such as multi stage builds. I have read a lot of books that are dated, but still helpful as they cover the fundamentals well and once read, reading whatever current documentation is available brings you up to date. This is not one of those books.
Very good book on the subject. I was interested in using docker because a bigger container technology like OpenStack using VMs is too much. Docker uses the linux namespaces to right size containers. Instead of abstracting the machine (VM), docker only abstracts part of the operating system (cgroup, IPC, network, mount points, process, user, UTS). This book does a very good job of showing how and when to use this technology and is loaded with working examples. You will have a good grasp on the basics when you work through this book. It is not a requirement but you should have a fairly good understand of networking since containers/namespaces can result in fairly complex network on single machine. As a bonus if you register the book you get a PDF/digital copy. Nice!
Awesome book. It got me started on docker in no time. Really simple to follow and pretty exhaustive in coverage.
Great intro book but contents are outdated.
Outdated but gives the basics. Most of the "new" technology books on O'Reilly are out of date by the time they're published, especially something like Jenkins and Docker which rev almost every other month.
I'm three chapters short of finishing “Docker in Action.†Usually, I finish a book before reviewing it but I wanted to get my review in before the coderanch.com book promotion for this title.Anyway, good book. It covers the concepts well in addition to providing examples you can easily follow along with and best practices. There was even a scavenger hunt activity to get you familiar with search. I also liked the disclaimers about chaning tech and how to excuse the poor passwordss “suppose the DBA is a cat lover and hates strong passwordsâ€My favorite chapter was chapter 9 (which is online for free at Manning's site). In addition to explaining different models, it had a comparison table on how each hosting mechanism scores on various attributes with notes on each. It also had a great diagram for each. My second favorite chapter was chapter 8 which covers each of the instructions for a docker file.So what prevented me from giving a perfect score? Little things. There's a reference to Appendix B, but no Appendix. I'd have liked a comparison of all the models (without notes) in Chapter 9. There were some forward references that confused me. Nothing terrible, but I can't give a perfect star rating. I still recommend you buy the book. I cannot think of one book that has more influence on me than Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is a book that I once read at least once a year and it never failed to fill my mind with hope and ideas. I totally disagree with those who consider Nietzsche to be hard, stern, and without hope. I find nothing but hope in the works of Nietzsche. He deepest desire was to see humans remove the yoke of any oppressive ideologies which hindered thoughts and imagination. My initial reading of Zarathustra was very disappointing. I was not ready for the very stylized language he used but subsequent reading made me look beyond the style and see the thoughts behind them and then yielded the wisdom beneath. I make no claims to entirely understand Nietzsche but someone who dropped out before reaching high school I believe I have a fairly good grasp of his overall principles. His ideas are not so abstract that only scholars can understand them. I have now read most of his major works and consider him the single greatest influence on my own life and the perceptions of various institutions. As an atheist I was naturally drawn to his hostility towards most forms of organized religions---the exception for Nietzsche being Buddhism--but he was not grim or dour about this and always championed the "yay-saying" and discouraged the "nay-saing". His words can come across as a bit hard and cold but he felt he was in a desperate battle with a force that was robbing humanity of it's humanity and there was no sense mincing words about the consequences. He would have hated the Nazis. They were everything he despised about the regressive nature of humanity. The were devoid of all hope and their perverse use of the philosophy would have sickened him. This is a book that is still very valid and vital to the health of humanity. It should be read and reread.
A very good and dense book. I don't know if it was the prose, the translation, or the age of language in the text, but I found myself reading a few passages multiple times to really understand it. But all-and-all, a great read.People have spent decades writing long explanations and commentary on the book, so I'll simply say that much of it I could relate to my own challenges and experiences in life and that its message resonated with me.
This is a good, straightforward and fairly literal translation, with helpful notes -- not too many, but useful. I much prefer it to the work of Walter Kaufmann which has for a long time been standard fare for university reading. Walter was better than the Nazified edition with the author's sister to speak for him. But there is a great deal of self-important nonsense by Mr. Kaufmann in his edition. Here we have a fine translation that may well become the new university standard, at least it is for me.
I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs.It is a wonderful book, and anyone who has read his other works will find that "Zarathustra" really does synthesize and summarize those other works.The challenge with "Zarathustra" and Nietzsche's other works, is the depth and breadth of his experience and scholarship. The more I read his works, the more I realize I miss...and to some degree must miss! I have a limited background in Classical studies, but not to the extent Nietzsche did. As another for-instance - I do not speak or read French or Italian, and so I can only analytically understand Nietzsche's statements about the cadences of those languages, and their connection to their local habitats, and the way they both reflect and influence their speakers' demeanors. Oh well! Something to shoot for, for me, I guess, to learn Spanish and French....and, German?!This is a very good translation with good end-notes. There are some references I think the translator missed, but that's ok.
Nietzche dances along the edge of schizophrenia, which a Horrobin has noted is HUMAN WRIT LARGE.There is nothing exceptional in normalcy, by definition, therefore only madmen can be geniuses.I Am well acquainted with schizophrenia, and Nietzche's work offers an insight into their intense inner world.He was spurned by the sane, not for loving too little, but for loving too intensely.You will wait in vain for the promised superman to emerge, for this is a story of his gestation, not his birth. We await his birth wondering who he is; and what his nature.Perhaps this is an overhang from Nietzche's monotheists past, with all their talk of "The Return of the Messiah"Us Vanatru, one the other hand, have our Sacred and eternal Wheel of Life.

Worth a read , a lot of good insights, packed with information, a pantheism apology in effect. It’s 50% notes and bibliography, quiet interesting
A good question, why do most humans have some sort of religious feelings? A fluent historical quest that can be read as easily as a novel. A loving intersection with the author's personal experience. I had to subtract 1 star because it doesn' t give enough room for important religions further to the East. I also recommend Zealot.
Well written and very informative
The first chapter confuses readers by using the Biblical characters of Adam and Eve as metaphors for the beginning of humanity, i.e. earliest human beings. However, starting with his interpretation of Breuil's drawing as the earliest image ever found of God, the reader is set on the path of a highly interesting journey unpacking the evolution of the idea of God among humans. The first half of the book would be a wonderful supplement to a Western Civilization course (first half) or a History of World Religions. The book is weakened considerably by a disappointing ending and a theory that is easily rejected by many faiths today. I don't think Pantheism is the answer and I certainly don't accept that I am God (nor that any other human being is God, too).
