When I finished THE DAY THAT WENT MISSING, I though for a long time. I thought about the author doing what she does best in a literary memoir and that is excavating. The author does that here in slow painstaking steps. He exhausts every piece of the story of his brother's death and follows it to the end, even when that end might not give him all the answers he wants. It is all so difficult for him. There's his approach and pulling back from THE spot where his brother drowned and then finally a full-on confrontation, not quite leading to an exoneration, but an acceptance.
When I was a child, my father often went on business to England from our home in Connecticut. We spent many summers in Cornwall and I fell in love with the area. I became aware of this book several months ago after reading excerpts in several online UK newspapers. It seemed like such a sad story, yet one I wanted to read. After reading the review in the NY Times (Dec. 18) I purchased the book on my Kindle and could not put it down. This is a sad, but beautifully written story.
Gutrenching. Author's storytelling, candor and authenticity bring this book alive. A book I won't soon forget. A highly recommended memoir.
Richard Beard was eleven years old when his nine-year-old brother Nicky drowned in the sea on a family holiday. The rest of his family never spoke of the incident or discussed it among themselves. Decades later, Richard finds himself asking why. So begins a quest to uncover the events of that summer, to turn his eye on them for the first time – and this time, to not look away.I found this book to be a rich experience, written in plain, precise, intelligent language that examines difficult emotions in unsparing clarity. Richard’s his quest throws up many unexpected problems for him. First of all, it’s difficult to persuade his mother to talk about her memories, but when she does he finds they don’t match his own. For instance, she had always sworn that Nicky’s things were in a red suitcase in the attic. In fact, when Richard goes searching he finds they were not; they were scattered through all the other family possessions.This unsettles him profoundly. ‘If I’m wrong about what I remember, what else might I always be wrong about?’ And there’s much more for him to examine here than just a few mistaken facts.He talks about Nicky as he remembers him, which becomes an examination of the nature of sibling relationships. He remembers Nicky being fiercely competitive, and how it was a matter of honour to do better than him. Ultimately, Richard has to confront the fact that he beat Nicky once and for all – they were both in the sea that day, and Richard outswam the wave that claimed Nicky’s life. He returns many times to this, trying to strip away the pecking order of family life that stops you seeing a sibling for who they truly are, trying to understand who Nicky might really have been. There are frequent references to Lord of the Flies, and the feral rivalries of youth.Part of Richard’s quest is an attempt to understand why Nicky’s death became a subject the family never shared or talked about. He wants to unravel how that happened and whether it might have been possible to handle it differently. This was before the days when counselling was routine. We get a portrait of an ordinary family in the late 1970s, trying to do their best in a situation that nobody is ever really equipped to handle.With so many unreliable memories, every detail takes on a totemic quality; the exact location of the beach, the exact time of death, the coroner’s findings. All are part of Richard’s journey to confront the events – and not just the sequential facts, but deeper and perhaps unpalatable emotional truths.Every step of the search gives him a new emotion to assimilate. For the most part, I found the narrative riveting, although I did think it slow in some of the later sections. Nevertheless, I feel privileged to have been taken on such an honest journey and I’ll be thinking about it for some considerable time. Moving and memorable.

He searches through his mother’s attic for remnants of his brother’s life - boarding school reports, things that belonged to his brother, his father’s papers and records for clues to what happened. He painfully returns to the beach where it happened, to the house the family was renting when the tragedy occurred, the very same house that his parents brought them back to right after the funeral. I couldn’t imagine that. This is a sad, difficult journey as Beard grapples with his own memories and those of his family which are sometimes at odds with his own remembrances. I don’t know for sure if he found the peace he was seeking, but I hope so. This is a beautifully written and moving memoir and I’m interested in perhaps reading some of his fiction.I received an advanced copy of Little, Brown and Company.

Peter Raymundo was 21 years old when he went to work for Walt Disney Studios as part of their Feature Animation Division. There he drew (and drew and drew) for films such as Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch and Mulan. To this day, he says he can draw Mulan's two friends Ling and Chien Po as easily as he can write his own name! Pete is the author of the picture book The Monkey and the Bee and Third Grade Mermaid is his debut chapter book series. His favorite part about working on Third Grade Mermaid was diving into the ocean research. Pete says: "Besides offering a naturally unique cast of characters, the ocean's timeless beauty and diversity provides an endless backdrop for fun and meaningful stories." Absolutely loved this book! Raymundo has a way of entertaining young readers while inspiring them to work hard to reach their goals! This book had built-in mini lessons on disappointment, imperfection, organization and preparation, perseverance and dreams fulfilled! Beautiful illustrations and fun, multi-sized fonts throughout! My 4 grandkids ages 2 to 13 enjoyed it! Can't wait for the next one!
I got this for my third grade daughter and she LOVES it. She's not big into reading but does like the "graphic novel" style books. I don't know if this is technically a graphic novel, but she is really into reading this. She laughs out loud at some parts and even wants me to read sections because she finds them to be really funny. I highly recommend this book - I can't wait for more to come out in this series.
My 6 year old daughter and I read this together and I know she will have memories of eating ice cream sundaes in her mermaid costume while listening to me read this book. Great as a read aloud for emerging readers! But, I think the true beauty of this book is the age group it was intended for; readers that are beyond 1-2 sentences per page, but are intimidated by full chapter books. Why can there not be more books like this for our children?! I know our daughter will take it out and read it on her own next year and take away other lessons that she may have missed the first time.And, did you notice what I wrote?! That's right, LESSONS! It actually has several life lessons that children can relate to. Things like avoiding problems, bullies and self-esteem are brought up. But, they are so secretly tucked away, that your child (and maybe even you while you are reading it) may not notice right away. You're just enjoying Cora's adventures, chuckling at her mishaps (the issue with her brother and the shrimp was FUNNY - or "FINNY" if you are a mermaid)! And, then you stop and start chatting about what is happening and realize there are several problems she is facing; just like our kids!And, of course, this book cannot be reviewed completely without mentioning the artwork. Each page is full of adorable, beautiful illustrations and perfect for the story. The author/illustrator's background was in animation with Disney. Yet, it is still a style all to its own. I can see a stuffed Cora somewhere down the line! And, I know one little mermaid that will be saving up her "seashells" to buy one!
My husband and I LOVE this book!! I've been a librarian for over 14 years, and my husband is a reading tutor. He uses this book with his students, and they have fallen in love with it. Students who find spelling to be so difficult that it gets in the way of their love of writing will change the way they feel forever! A must read for all!!
Daughter loves this series of books (3rd grade). She is reading on a 6th grade level so there is no real challenge here. But it keeps her attention because the storyline is good.

This is a great primer on the subject of Covenant Theology, as held to within the Reformed Baptist tradition. Each of the contributors clearly present the basis for accepting Covenant Theology as a necessary distinctive of Reformed Baptist theology. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the meaning and place of Covenant Theology within Baptist thought, this will be a useful introduction. For those already well versed in the history and meaning of Covenant Theology, there will be little new ground broken. With the exception of the first chapter the book reads quickly and presents a lot of information in a concise manner. This is a book worthy of having a place on any bookshelf.
This book has been a long time coming and not a minute too soon. This was the perspective of many Baptist pastors from the 1645 to the 1890s. Some will claim that you can't hold to Covenant theology and be a Baptist. This group of authors make a case for the opposite.
This is probably the single best book for understanding covenant theology.

Malone, Kenneth Puls, and Justin Taylor (Solid Ground Christian Books, Birmingham, Alabama 2012) 164 pages.Simply put, Covenant Theology - A Baptist Distinctive, is a rich, thoughtful, well disciplined, and Christ-centered work that is worthy of commendation. Earl Blackburn and all of the contributors of this title have supplied Christ's body with a valuable tool for comprehending the scriptural distinctions between brethren of the Reformed Baptist, Reformed Paedobaptist, and Dispensational communities. Though the book primarily focuses on a scriptural defense of Reformed Baptist theology, it also manages to issue correctives of other viewpoints, but with a deeply irenic tone. As to this latter point, Covenant Theology - A Baptist Distinctive supplies an excellent example of what is sorely needed in the present day, especially in view of those who seek to vilify and marginalize any form of Covenant Theology without exception. Additionally, I am glad to say that this book manages to keep the Lord as the central focus in everything, as is evident from the very beginning:"It [Covenant Theology] is the exciting truth of the Eternal Father giving to His Beloved Son a fallen people for His own to redeem by His incarnate blood and righteous life; it is the humbling truth that One so divine would gladly agree to His own suffering for such sinners; and it is the miraculous truth that the Holy Spirit would invade the rebels hearts' to free them from their enemy's grip and to resurrect their dead souls to embrace by faith alone the covenant Mediator of their covenant Father. Truly, the Covenant Theology of the Bible is a wonder of God's infinite grace which brings Him eternal glory from the lips of those covenant sons and daughters who eternally give thanks to His glorious name." (Taylor); II - Covenant Theology in Baptist Life (Fryer); III - A Comparison Between the Old and New Covenants (Puls).All of these sections come together very well, giving the reader a careful consideration of the various elements of continuity and discontinuity between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. From an editorial standpoint, the book's multiple layers harmonize very well. Especially strong are Malone's presentation of hermeneutics (Chapter 2) which supplies a very persuasive foundation for the entire book, and Chantry's emphasis on the centrality of imputation (Chapter 4) is both clear and cogent, stressing the gravity of this important doctrine.Throughout the book, priority is given to the principle of Sola Scriptura, however, significant elements from church history are interwoven throughout, including important portions of the LBC/1689 in addition to mentions of the strengths and weaknesses of various theologians, both past and present.All in all, this is a much needed work in a very needy time.
This is a collection of essays on covenant theology from a baptist perspective. It goes without saying that this perspective is unknown or misunderstood by many dispensationalists and paedobaptists. Therefore, this collection is a well-needed contribution. None of the essays are difficult to read, but some of the authors writing style can be a bit dry- I would not allow this to prevent one from reading it. My favorite contribution comes from Fred Malone who wrote the forward, and Chapter 2- Biblical Hermeneutics and Covenant Theology. For any with the notion that such a topic is dry or irrelevant, Malone's opening words from the forward will move one to worship:"Our covenant Savior sit upon a throne at His Father's right hand receiving the praise of all heavenly creatures. The saints of the OT and NT gone before us gaze upon His face with awe and wonder and love, both redeemed from sin in their times by the same blood of the crucified Lamb, slain by His Father's timeless decree before the foundation of the world. Songs of praise and adoration fall upon His ears while He delights in the joy of bringing many sons to glory.....He is the Covenant Himself, the Mediator of His covenant salvation for His own. He is faithful to his promises, kind in His gifts, patient with their infirmities, and merciful to their sins."

This is a geat resource for those who are new to Pilates and also for some of us who have been doing Pilates for a long time and who have forgotten (or never learned) so of the basics. I love this book because it is easy reading and provides clear guidelines for effective Pilates workouts!!!! I used to do competition body-building years ago and wish that I had learned Pilates back then because I'm sure my body-building and weight training would have been even better and will less chances for injury and eliminate some pain due to poor core work!!!! Better late than never!!!!
I'm a 65 year old woman trying to learn Pilates due to back issues. Look at the picture of the front of thisbook. I should have known even this book would not be basic enough for me. There are areas in the book thatstate "It is so simple you don't even need a picture". I NEED a picture.This book will not teach you how to breath, finding your neutral position or show you the ten basic exercises thatstrengthen but do not hurt or harm back injuries.Find a good Pilate instructor and pay for one on one instruction until you know what you are doing.
Great read for someone needing to know the basics. Love this book. Packed full of information.
I took my first Pilates class and grasped the concept instantly but I wanted to do it on my own. I bought the Pilates for Dummies book and it proved to be a great starting point for me. I never enjoyed Yoga so Pilates is a welcome discovery; an addition to the weight resistance I do daily at the gym. As with all of the Dummies books, this one is easy to follow.
This is a good introduction to Pilates, however, the exercises are a bit hard to understand via a book, but it is easy to look the stuff up on YouTube, which is why I didn't dock the book another star. May be something to think of if you are getting as a book for a technophobe, though.
Didn’t care for. Difficult to follow
Very useful material and very comprehensive, too. The author has her own terminology for a few things (her "Pilates alphabet") which takes a little getting used to. Good photo illustrations of all the moves.
I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.The book gives excellent explanations. While the class gave me a sense of how a flowing routine will work, I can do it at home with the aid of the book.I recommend it highly. Thanks, A Pilates Dummy Fan

It's a good resource for someone who knows very little about the process, but it's also vague and generalized in many ways. Instead of simply saying "you should consult a lawyer" on specific issues, it'd be helpful if the author gave the facts, circumstances, and outcomes of at least a handful of cases to give us a better idea. The information is out there on the LexisNexis database. I'd go to the trouble of searching through there for case law myself - but I'm not an immigration attorney who is getting paid to write a book on the topic.It is also outdated, though the author is quick to point out that this is inevitable due to rapidly evolving laws. There seems to have been a big shift in immigration policy following the change in presidential administration, and since this book was published before that point, I'm not sure it's reliable. For example: Multiple friends of mine completed this process in 3 months before Trump was in office - now it takes about 9. USCIS is also stricter on certain aspects now than they used to be.Ultimately, I ended up paying $350 for a "simple" online service that actually is helpful, and I wish I would've done that from the beginning.
First of all, let me start by saying THANK YOU to everyone involved in this book, it has steered us away from candid mistakes that could lead to serious problems. Second, do not take anything written in this review as a legal advice, YMMV, I'm far from an expert on these matters.This book has saved us time, money and stress, and since our case was straightforward, we didn't need an attorney for it. However, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY, even if you do need an immigration attorney, this book remains a sound source of vital and easily digestible information, there's even a section on how to deal with sleazy lawyers and after you get your green card.No book can keep up with the changing dynamics of the USCIS and this book is no exception.With that said, note that they EXPLICITLY say the forms in the book might be outdated from the time of publication, and that you MUST ALWAYS go check the USCIS site for the up-to-date forms. This reason is not a deal breaker, in our experience, we found little to none differences to such forms, and most, if not all, of the filling advice was accurate. Again, I cannot be hold responsible if any problems you encounter in your own case, I'm not an expert.When you send your packet, follow the instructions in the book and USCIS has a document on how to file the packet and it has a prefered way of sending and filing the packet. Once our interview came, the officer praised us for our packet filing style, and even though he didn't say it, we'd like to think that it made his job easier and our case timeline smoother.
It is an excellent source of information to guide you over your adjustment of status process. Just to add: While submitting your AOS package, attach all the evidence of your family relationship as you can, don't send just the filled forms. Highly recommended.
I bought this book in September. I started using the book and I found out the book is totally outdated. There is nothing current about this book. The forms are all different and the book can be use as a very generic information but it does not work as it states that you can use the book as a guide for your immigration application.
The book is helpful, but I think the checklist needs to be improved based on the scenarios provided in the book, and in the case of concurrent filing, there should be a more wholistic approach, instead of trying to piece together pieces of information from different chapters.
Very comprehensive and good help, but needs to beber updated. Imigration has changed its forms and the templates in the book are no longer the same used to apply.
Very thorough. Almost too much information! and my particular questions were only partly addressed. But still an important and useful guide.
