This is an excellent book. The authors have done extensive research from both a legal and economic standpoint to support their hypothesis that companies with better Board governance, more accountable CEOs, better structured CEO compensation packages perform much better than the others. They show better operating performance resulting in superior shareholder value creation over the long term.Their diagnostic of what ales executive compensations are so well grounded they have become common knowledge for any readers of the financial press over the past couple of decades. Compensation of CEOs and other top officers has become insane. The structure of equity compensation has become so tilted in the CEOs favor that as the authors indicate they really don't have to perform. If they perform poorly they make a boatload of money. If their performance is about average they make an astronomical amount of money. What kind of pay-for-performance is this?Other reviewers have had surprisingly strong reactions to the authors' proposals to redress the effectiveness of executive compensation. I found that surprising given that the authors' proposals are not that radical to begin with. They boil down to restructuring equity compensation so they reflect targets and vesting periods that make economic sense and align the economic interest of the executive with the long-term interest of shareholders. Their proposals also entails a massive shift of power from entrenched Board members plagued with serious conflict of interest to the shareholders of the companies who are the ones bearing the full brunt of the equity risk. In the days of the Enron, Tyco International, Arthur Andersen recent scandals, I find the authors recommendations rather sound. I do think a shift from Board to shareholder power would do a good deal to restore the integrity of certain executives, the transparency and the quality of accounting and financial disclosure.Thus, I really think you will enjoy and learn a lot from this book. In a similar fashion, if you want to educate yourself regarding how movie stars are paid, and why just like CEOs they may be grossly overpaid I strongly recommend the recently released book "The Big Picture" by Edward Jay Epstein. This is another fascinating point that touches on the sensitive topic of a privilege group that earns a staggering amount of money hardly justifiable on any grounds.
Superb exposé on the appalling lack of ethical fortitude amongst our country's business elite--namely the chief executives, their officers, and sadly those given the responsibility for representing the shareholders' interests, the directors. The adage "no one looks after your money like you do" is well-remembered by the reader of "Pay without Performance."Primarily due to a phenomenon know as "interlocking" executives cross-pollinate their respective boards with a surprisingly shallow gene pool leaving the ordinary shareholder hardly independently represented at all.Bebchuk and Fried do well by illustrating the mockery known as "independent compensation committees" when these committees are typically hired under the corporation's own HR department usually by CEO referral. Tough to place credence in any recommendation so biased from the outset!Now only two years after the publication of this book, and several studies cited therein, the SEC has launched a sweeping probe into options timing--in particular boards who allowed their executives to cherry-pick the grant dates of options to take advantage of inside information to profit at the expense of shareholders at large. Criminal, yet condoned by far too many corporate "leaders."Ultimately the question arises--Is the solution for shareholders to vote via increased legislation or with their wallet by only investing in corporations fully aligned with their interests? The authors make an excellent case for instituting a performance-based compensation system as well as supporting the role of making directors truly independent and not pawns of the CEO. So sang Leonard Cohen in 1988's "Everybody Knows".The game of executive compensation, this fascinating study of CEO pay demonstrates, is definitely fixed. In theory, executives are hired by a company's impartial board of directors, who negotiate with them at "arm's lengths". If the CEO of large public owned companies receive huge compensation - and they do - that's because they are worth it. Much of the compensation is tied to the firm and the CEO's performance. Thus the CEO has an incentive to ably serve shareholder's interests. As Gordon Gekko put it (Wall Street (20th Anniversary Edition)): "Greed is Good".Or so goes the theory.But everybody knows that the theory is nonsense; Lucian Bebchuk and Jesse Fried's study confirms that common sense perception: That CEO compensation is a game of insiders enriching themselves (and each other) at the outsiders' expense.Far from being "arm's lengths" negotiators, the directors of a company are more or less stooges of the Firm's CEO. They don't quite serve at his pleasure, but he has ample control. Until the 2003 reforms, while the directors in the "compensation committee" had to be "independent" (that is, not part of the company), the directors on the "nominating committee" that picked the directors were not. Thus the CEO might have sat on, and maybe chaired, the nominating committee. After the Enron scandal and the 2003 reforms, the members of the "nominating committee" have to be independent. But that begs the question - who is an independent director? Well, Independent directors are people who may receive compensation from the CEO controlled company - but no more than 100,000 US dollars a year. And that does not include perks given to family members, donated to charities you favor (or work in), or, with some limitations, to companies you are involved in (p. 28). Director Independence is more of less a sham. And even if it weren't, Directors have little incentive to curb CEO compensation - many of them are or were CEOs themselves. Sometimes it's an "I'll rub your back and you'll rub mine" deal where the CEO of one company is a director of another company who's CEO is a director of his company. At any case, the atmosphere among the directors is friendly, collegial and non-confrontational - as one board member puts it, it's somewhat like a club (p. 32). There are few effective checks on the powers of CEOs to feast on the shareholder's money. The CEO's compensation is not a large enough issue for the market to respond to, and the Courts generally refuse to intervene in decisions by professional executives and directors. The best defense against CEO abuse is what Bebchuk and Fried call "outrage" - the bad publicity caused by the discovery of the executives' scandalous self dealing. Outrage does check some of the worst abuses. Fortunately for the CEOs, though, there is a way to give themselves large compensation that is not sensitive to their performance: camouflage. Executives and directors have found ingenious ways of devising gigantic rewards that are hard to recognize as rewards. Whether in the form of perks (such as unlimited use of the corporate jet long after retirement), fat consultancy fees (for which little actual consulting is done), or so-called "split dollar life insurance policies" (don't ask). But the worst offenders are probably the stock options. Until recently, chief executives would get options that were not indexed to the market or the sector -meaning that the executive would benefit from any increase in the company's stock price, even one that he had nothing to do with. And if the share's price went down - no worry, the option's target price would go down as well. "Heads, I win, Tails - I also win".Fried and Bebchuk paint a gloomy picture of the current state of affairs. They acknowledge that their work is primarily descriptive rather than normative, but they still offer two chapters of solutions.The first chapter focuses on various reforms, outlawing the most outrageous current schemes. That sounds to me like a good but essentially hopeless idea: No matter how many loopholes regulators would close, CEOs and their directors would always find new loopholes to exploit.More promising is the final chapter, which focuses on ways to improve corporate democracy. Currently, the firm's directors are more or less immune from challenges by shareholders. Bebchuk and Fried offer reforms that could make them more accountable.But to what end? The problem of collective action (one shareholder's actions serve the interests of non-active shareholders; this everyone has an incentive to do little) plagues corporations. Could better corporate governance really overcome it? I doubt it.I wish Fried and Bebchuk would expand their watch to look at executive compensation outside the US, or even in different eras of US history. In The Conscience of a Liberal,Paul Krugman argues that the massive pay to US executives is not inevitable - it is the results of specific political and economic forces in US society. Maybe the US can learn from the experience of others.Bebchuk and Fried's book is well written and very interesting, even if it is somewhat too detailed and technical for the casual reader. I recommend it if you want to know the nuts and Bolts of what "everybody knows".

This book highlights and summarizes important concepts, but not in enough detail. I read through most of it and did all of the practice tests it includes, studying intermittently for about 3 weeks, and I received a score of 53; passing but not by much. I found that the questions on the actual test were much more difficult; they were worded differently than the practice tests provided in this book. The actual test also included many theories as well as specific psychologists/theorists. This is the fourth CLEP exam I've taken, and have used this brand of study guides for all and passed all of them (with more than enough points, aside from this one). Overall, it gets the job done if you put in the effort, although I found this particular one to be the least helpful.
This study guide will help you pass the CLEP test but not necessarily ace it. I got a scaled score of 70. I practically memorized the book. In addition, I reviewed a few concepts using a Life Span college textbook I borrowed from a friend, and used Google search to find out info on a few more topics like Gardners personality- career types, Hierarchy of Needs, Big 5 Theory, and Gifted Children studies. I couldn't have studied anymore than I did but there were some questions covering topics I had never heard of. That said, if you study this book well, apply some common sense, and supplement with a few online searches, you should do well on the test, and passing is what counts.

Thought this was a great review study guide! I studied hard for 2.5 weeks prior to taking the Clep exam. I thought it was helpful to have the pretest, and two other tests online to see how you are progressing. My school requires a 50 or higher on the exam to get credit. The mock test I got a 69. It was helpful to the types of questions, however I thought the real clep test was more difficult; ie: more that one answer that could be right and have to choose the most correct answer. On the actual clep I got a 58, so I passed! A little too close for comfort though. This book didn't really cover neuro very well so cross refrance other sources would be a good idea. This book does a good job on theories and development. It's easy to understand. Overall totally worth every penny. This just saved me more than $500 in books and tuition and not to mention my precious time by testing out of this class!!
I studied for five days straight for my CLEP exam and got a 74. I took an intro psyche class three years ago and that's the only other exposure I've had to psychology before this. I had to have a second psychology for a graduate program, I came to this realization fairly late in my application process which is why I decided to CLEP it. I read this book all the way through, made flash cards and looked up some extra details from youtube using the MCAT Kaplan psyche tutorials on the theorists. This book really does cover the meat of the exam. I would also recommend buying the study guide from the CLEP website for the specific test and referencing that against the book. Otherwise this book is a sure bet.
This is arguably the best source to utilize if you need to pass the Clep Human Growth and Development exam. I took the test yesterday and passed with a 62. I would estimate that 85% of the material on the test was covered in this book. The online component was quite helpful, as it mimics the test's conditions and provides you valuable feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. Also, three of the practice test questions were on the actual Clep exam. This book does have its issues, though, in regards to accuracy in at least three instances: (1) Page 33 states, “A correlation coefficient can range in value from 0-1.†In truth, a correlation coefficient ranges from -1 through +1, with zero signifying the two variables have no relationship. (2) Page 45 states, “Because so many vital organs and body parts are developing during the embryo stage or second trimester, harmful agents are especially dangerous during this prenatal period.†The embryo stage is during the first trimester, not the second. (3) These mislabelings of the stages of prenatal development also occur on pages 42-43, as the text refers to the first trimester as the “germinal period,†the second trimester as the “period of the embryo,†and the third trimester as the “period of the fetus.†Both the germinal stage and the embryo stage occur in the first trimester, with the fetus period occurring in all three trimesters. Overall, these three mistakes do not devalue the book as an indispensable study resource. I know of no other text that covers the material as comprehensively and as concisely as Dr. Heindel’s does!
I needed to pass the Human Growth and Development CLEP exam to get preschool teacher certified. I came at the exam with years of professional teaching experience a Masters degree in an unrelated field. The material in this book covers 90% of possible exam material (there were definitely things on the exam that weren't in the book). I spent about 3 weeks reading and reviewing. Because the book is so condensed, every sentence or seemingly irrelevant bit of information could be part of a question!! So really read it and don't skim. The practice tests are SUPER helpful and really prepare you for the actual exam. I got a scaled score of 73 on the practice tests in the book and a 62 on the actual exam. If ever I need to dodge an undergrad course in the future, I will definitely use the REA study guides for CLEP exams!
I only read through this once, taking two practice tests. I made a 59. Be aware, however, that I came into this with prior knowledge from my LPN program and my statistics course. It had been well over a year since I had reviewed any of this information. This book helped me learn new concepts and refresh on what I didn't remember well. The practice tests seemed pretty representative of the information on the actual test. I was scoring around 70 on the practice tests. Hit my recommend!

It is a neat book to flip through and see old pictures, but I do wish the author had driven out to the locations again to get new pictures when he decided to publish a book. I would estimate 5% of the photos have him in them, and he is not the subject of the book.
good stuff
Cataldo has presented quite a few interesting photos of old San Bernardino, some factual inaccuracies and poor writing, and oddly, several pictures of his family. The one showing them dining at a modern restaurant seems particularly irrelevant. Yet he is featured regularly as a speaker on San Bernardino history at the county museum. It just goes to show that the local history good ol' boy system is more about social cliquery than quality research and writing.
As historian, columnist and author of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I greatly admire the expert job done by Mr. Cataldo in gathering and arranging some of San Bernardino's most intriguing historic and vintage images. Truly, for those of us interested in San Bernardino, this book is eye candy.
This book is wonderful for the old pre-1940 pictures. If you could buy these in any other book, the price would probably be tripled. However, there are at least 6 pictures of the author and his family that have no historical significance in my opinion.Perhaps my expectation were too high. I would like to see more of the pre 1950 photos. I would estimate about 100 pages of great pictures and 25 pages of non-interesting pictures.
This book was interesting and helped me to picture the earlly days of San Bernardino.

I intended to dip in and out of the short stories in Amy Hempel’s Sing To It over the course of a month. Instead, I read them all in just over a day—being in her voice and world was so good I didn’t want to leave. From a one-page stunner like The Orphan Lamb, which delivers an almost physical gut punch in so few words, to a longer story like The Correct Grip, about the aftermath of an assault, or the heartbreaking novella-length story Cloudland that closes out the collection—all are razor-sharp, with the kind of clean, clear writing that had me highlighting things throughout because I had never heard them expressed so perfectly before. A measure for me of how good Hempel is was A Full-Service Shelter; I am not a dog person nor am I a crier, but this story about a woman who spends her evenings caring for dogs due to be euthanized in the morning wrecked me. (A dog-loving friend couldn’t make it past the first page.) Amy Hempel wasn’t on my radar before but she sure is now; thanks to her I may finally have to stop saying that I’m not really a short story person.

I basically give all these Garfield 3-packs the same rating-- First, it's a really good deal to buy the books this way price-wise. Second, Garfield really inspired my 8 year old son to learn to read a few years ago, and he reads and re-reads these books over and over. Unlike some comic books or made-for-kids books (I'm thinking of things like the comic sections of Captain Underpants), there are no spelling errors or weird slang he won't understand-- Nothing too violent or off-color-- Just Garfield. I can let him read it without worrying about it, and Garfield has become an old friend.
we have many volumes, but for some reason volume 4 falls apart. Tried two books and both had to be tossed.
I used to read garfield all the time when I was little, I had an old copy from my elementary days in my classroom. One day a kid picked it up and could NOT stop laughing. I had to buy more to keep my class under control. They are great for getting some stubborn boys to read :)
My 8 and 11 yr old fought over who was going to get their little grubby hands on this book first... What can I say.... GARFIELD NEVER fails... The vocabulary and not to mention the sarcasm my kiddos have learned from years of reading Garfield.... Priceless.
What a great value!!! My son LOVES reading the funny pages in the paper. I found these and some foxtrot ones for him for his birthday and he hardly puts them down! Great value! Perfect for any funny pages fan my son has gotten HOURS out of this book. He has read and re read over and over will buy more volumes of these for christmas!
My son is not the most "into school" kid-- and he was really struggling in reading-- Was even in Reading Recovery in first grade (last year) for awhile-- And then he discovered Garfield comic books at the library and fell in love with them!-- and he just tested in the 78percentile (meaning, he reads better than 78 percent of kids in our district for his grade)! He LOVES these books and I've bought him a few of these 3-pack books on Amazon (way cheaper than anywhere else!) as gifts for him, just to say "Good job, keep going!" Really, for how thick and colorful the book is-- this is really a nice price. While they (all the Garfield 3-pack books-- which there are many!) are generally paperback, it's a nice sturdy binding and, unlike some of the other books that kids his age tend to be attracted to, I know the words are spelled correctly, the grammar isn't funky-- and there is nothing too racy in it! I say if you can find something that gets your kid reading that meet those criteria-- GRAB IT!
This book, and other Garfield books, are a great step for kids who have grown out of phonics books but are too intimidated to try chapter books. There's not too many words on each page and each page has pictures to provide contextual clues to more difficult words. However, these aren't "babyish" so older kids love to read these as well. Garfield books help my son actual enjoy silent reading time. I love the value of these 3-packs as well.
My 7 year old daughter loves these Garfield Fat Cat 3-packs. She has been spending at least an hour each evening soaking in the lasagna loving cat comics. One item to note is that pack #10, 11 and 12 are slightly less tall books and are in black and white. The others have been in color.
