I intended to dip in and out of the short stories in Amy Hempel’s Sing To It over the course of a month. Instead, I read them all in just over a day—being in her voice and world was so good I didn’t want to leave. From a one-page stunner like The Orphan Lamb, which delivers an almost physical gut punch in so few words, to a longer story like The Correct Grip, about the aftermath of an assault, or the heartbreaking novella-length story Cloudland that closes out the collection—all are razor-sharp, with the kind of clean, clear writing that had me highlighting things throughout because I had never heard them expressed so perfectly before. A measure for me of how good Hempel is was A Full-Service Shelter; I am not a dog person nor am I a crier, but this story about a woman who spends her evenings caring for dogs due to be euthanized in the morning wrecked me. (A dog-loving friend couldn’t make it past the first page.) Amy Hempel wasn’t on my radar before but she sure is now; thanks to her I may finally have to stop saying that I’m not really a short story person.

I basically give all these Garfield 3-packs the same rating-- First, it's a really good deal to buy the books this way price-wise. Second, Garfield really inspired my 8 year old son to learn to read a few years ago, and he reads and re-reads these books over and over. Unlike some comic books or made-for-kids books (I'm thinking of things like the comic sections of Captain Underpants), there are no spelling errors or weird slang he won't understand-- Nothing too violent or off-color-- Just Garfield. I can let him read it without worrying about it, and Garfield has become an old friend.
we have many volumes, but for some reason volume 4 falls apart. Tried two books and both had to be tossed.
I used to read garfield all the time when I was little, I had an old copy from my elementary days in my classroom. One day a kid picked it up and could NOT stop laughing. I had to buy more to keep my class under control. They are great for getting some stubborn boys to read :)
My 8 and 11 yr old fought over who was going to get their little grubby hands on this book first... What can I say.... GARFIELD NEVER fails... The vocabulary and not to mention the sarcasm my kiddos have learned from years of reading Garfield.... Priceless.
What a great value!!! My son LOVES reading the funny pages in the paper. I found these and some foxtrot ones for him for his birthday and he hardly puts them down! Great value! Perfect for any funny pages fan my son has gotten HOURS out of this book. He has read and re read over and over will buy more volumes of these for christmas!
My son is not the most "into school" kid-- and he was really struggling in reading-- Was even in Reading Recovery in first grade (last year) for awhile-- And then he discovered Garfield comic books at the library and fell in love with them!-- and he just tested in the 78percentile (meaning, he reads better than 78 percent of kids in our district for his grade)! He LOVES these books and I've bought him a few of these 3-pack books on Amazon (way cheaper than anywhere else!) as gifts for him, just to say "Good job, keep going!" Really, for how thick and colorful the book is-- this is really a nice price. While they (all the Garfield 3-pack books-- which there are many!) are generally paperback, it's a nice sturdy binding and, unlike some of the other books that kids his age tend to be attracted to, I know the words are spelled correctly, the grammar isn't funky-- and there is nothing too racy in it! I say if you can find something that gets your kid reading that meet those criteria-- GRAB IT!
This book, and other Garfield books, are a great step for kids who have grown out of phonics books but are too intimidated to try chapter books. There's not too many words on each page and each page has pictures to provide contextual clues to more difficult words. However, these aren't "babyish" so older kids love to read these as well. Garfield books help my son actual enjoy silent reading time. I love the value of these 3-packs as well.
My 7 year old daughter loves these Garfield Fat Cat 3-packs. She has been spending at least an hour each evening soaking in the lasagna loving cat comics. One item to note is that pack #10, 11 and 12 are slightly less tall books and are in black and white. The others have been in color.

His positive approach to life and his power to visualize ensure success. Mullen's photographs in all his books are exceptional. I especially love the pictures of the Sossuvlei dunes in this book. Enjoy an escape to another part of the world.
I really enjoyed the book, which was the story of the author's experience in Damaraland in Namibia. The book captured both the vast landscape and the local color of African and European people that the author came into contact with. I read the book while I was traveling in Namibia and found it a great travel companion.
This is a great read by someone who obviously knows what he's talking about. Living in Namibia, working in Namibia - in not always the easiest circumstances, he has a great attitude about all the things that can and do go wrong. The characters are larger than life, and the details about the country - and the desert - excellent.I totally enjoyed the book, and have already downloaded more from the same author. It made my weekend!

My 10 year old advanced reader loves this series. I was looking for a new series for him but struggled because he just isn't that into the fantasy type series. He prefers stories about real life. I was concerned the subject might be too much for his age but it is told in an age appropriate way. He devoured the whole series.
I rarely post reviews since I am so busy, but this book deserves a thoughtful review. I picked up the book for my 11yo son's summer reading list. He is hooked on anything WWII, but glamorizes war and the military aspects of the war (which is normal!). I wanted him to see another side... the ugly side of war. I read the book before giving it to him and I think this book is perfect for that goal. I get some of the negative reviews, but I am actually grateful for the way the story is told. If it wasn't told high level and a bit detached, it would be way to intense (and long) to be a children's book. The topic alone is about as intense as it gets and Yanek's experience spanned almost a decade. All that being said, there are some scenes that are emotional and scary. I think the balance is good, but as a parent, we know our kids best and when they are ready for this type of thing. I recommend you read it first before giving to your child so you can discuss what happens and give support if he/she is on the younger side of the age range.I downloaded the book to his kindle tonight and he doesn't want to put it down! Can I read one more chapter before going to bed? In one night, he started the book and read to chapter 6... did I mention my son really isn't a reader?!
Amazing story. My child read it for school but I got into the story equally. It is an amazing story about the Holocaust and survival based on true events reported to the author. The author takes you first hand into the life of a child during WWII and what he goes through to survive.

Prisoner B-3087 is a very moving story that tells of the hardships of simply being Jewish during what we call the Holocaust. I recommend this book because it shows how we are so very very very 'lucky' for what we have and that we should see life for not what it is but for what it could be.
The young boy Yanek learned that the only way to stay alive was to survive one more day. Yanek survived 10 concentration camps between the age of 13 and 16. Before the camp she survived the Krakow ghetto as a child. This corageous young man survived the war and immigrated to the USA. The book is a story of hardship and courage.
I can't imagine what I would have done during the Holocaust. For the many souls who died, they are with God. For the survivors, there's a special place in heaven for you with your family. This is a story of fear, starvation, and the horrible atrocities inflicted on people that one insane man claimed were not deserving of life. A Story of a little boy who saw his family members and friends disappear from his life, but against all of the odds kept his determination to live no matter what he endured. When we start to feel sorry for ourselves, we need to remember the Holocaust, and it's victims and survivors.
If you have a classroom library, REGARDLESS of what you teach, you MUST have this book in your library. Every student wanted to read this and after every student read this, recommended it to all their friends. I had to buy a class set from Scholastic to feed the frenzy! Highly recommend!

Gr 1-4-Once again, Burdett has produced a jaunty version of a Shakespeare work that grew from an intensive project with her elementary school students. The central text, composed of labored, uneven couplets, is the least appealing part of the book. Naive drawings, done by the students, are colored with clear, bright markers. Lively written additions from the second and third graders, such as Juliet's diary entries or reports from Verona citizens in response to the feud, show how well immersion in the play can lead to a good understanding by younger children. While readers elsewhere might enjoy a look at their contemporaries' drawings, it seems unlikely that they would derive even a fraction of the understanding of the play and its importance that Burdett's students got from the project. When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.
As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!
I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.
I really love this book. It made understanding a lot easier for my students. ~BUT~ I will say that some parts are a little much. It seems the translator looks for the most vulgar way to word some of Shakespeare's crude jokes (Shakespeare is crude, to be sure--and some of it is quite funny. However, sometimes the translator goes too far the other way). Plus, there were parts that weren't necessarily as sexual in the original as it was presented in the translated version (like scenes that were purposely left ambiguous so that it might have been interpreted in more than one way). This actually took away from the cleverness and thoughtfulness of some of Shakespeare's jokes.Because of this, I had to pre-read all the scenes to choose which scenes we read in this book, and which ones we read from the original text (from the textbook, where students couldn't read the translation). I did find, however, that the classes that used BOTH original and translated readings for the unit had an easier time understanding the original text when challenged to do so (likely because they didn't feel as overwhelmed from days of old text).This is a very useful tool for the classroom. Both versions are important--and, truthfully, some of my students preferred the original text, and some preferred the new text, so switching between the two for certain scenes was a great exercise.
This is such a great reimagining of the Shakespearean play. My students love this version and it keeps their attention with the fast-paced plot, colorful scenes, and flashy costumes. However, this edition is the NEW Music edition of the DVD, so there are added bonuses to this new disc. The music edition features a 45 minute documentary of how they picked the songs that were used in the movie. Twenty years after this film came out, my students are still singing along with some of the songs--they were the perfect choices and were timeless songs (and hey, if my students know Prince's "When the Doves Cry" more than 30 years after the song's initial release, yes, it is timeless).My DVD did not look like the photo (the cover is a bit different, although it does say "Music Edition") but I bought it for the movie and not for the cover. If you are a fan of this version of the movie and you don't have the music edition, you need this one. If you're just a Romeo and Juliet fan and have (gasp!) never seen this 1996 version, go ahead and take a chance. You'll love it.

Where to start such an amazing mix of poems and stories all very wonderfully written. Nicely done Sir. Every story has a different level of fantasy and desire which reaches all audiences. My personal favorite "The Madison Banquet" this story touches on some of my deepest desires and fantasies. I love a book that can take me there. Very erotic. Didn't want to put it down! I loved the entire book from beginning to end as well as the cover! I was so pleasured with this book and the way you write I ordered the trilogy Holiday Heat but that's for a different comment! Normally I read books that are single story/series that have a beginning-middle-happy ever after, so this was a nice change to experience something a little different. I have never been one for poetry, and don't think I have read any since high school 10+ years ago, but Cameron Lincoln's writing is just amazing and I enjoyed every single poem and story.There is a variety of stories in this book and I never got the feeling of déjà vu while reading, expect the unexpected with each story you read! No story I read was predictable and I loved that!The writing is very diverse and Mr Lincoln absolutely nailed it. Whether the story is from a female, male, alternating or third person point of view, you will really enjoy the style as it is all written perfectly, there is a true talent behind this writing. There is great use of descriptive words that had me using my dictionary a couple of times but I really like it when a book does that, helps me learn and broaden my vocabulary.No two characters are alike and it's nice to see a range of female characters whose description can make any reader feel beautiful in their own skin; curvaceous or thin, tall or short, blonde or red head and everything in between; you name it. One description in particular that caught my attention was a female described as having short blonde hair. I have had short hair myself since 2005 and have always battled against the stares and assumptions being made on my appearance. A couple pages later this short haired character is described as being beautiful... I couldn't stop smiling and it really made me feel great about myself. In 135 books, I have never read about a short haired woman, especially not one being described as beautiful. Thank you Mr Lincoln... thank you.I haven't given a 5 star review in a while but this book deserves more than the 5 that I'm allowed to rate it. I will definitely be trying to get a paperback version to add to my signed collection.
AMAZING! Going to start with the sprinkling of poetry. I wasn't too happy about that, however, after the first poem I couldn't wait to read the poems, I'm sold on his poetry. This was a different format then I'm used to, I usually don't read very short stories, especially an anthology of stories. Pure eroticism in every story. Each story made me sizzle. There's nothing to compare it to. I look forward to reading more from Cameron Lincoln.

Beautifully written collection of stories and poetry that are very diverse. There are a wide range of characters that are easy to identify with and you are drawn into each story. The author has a unique way with the written word as he brings us stories frul of romance, sex and lust! Hope to read much more of his work in the future.
