This story caused a complete mixture of emotions in me. It started out by capturing my attention. Then the story annoyed me. A while later it reignited my interest. Then I was perplexed and finally, the ending redeemed the story.On the one hand, it is the tale of naïve Anna who falls in love with her gambling-addicted boyfriend Scott, while at University. He drags Anna into his financial woes and her falling pregnant doesn’t help matters until Scott comes up with a plan that she agrees to and once done, regrets. Her decision-making skills leave much to be desired from the beginning of the story and it was this that irritated me. As a young student I found her gullibility annoying but 14 years later as a happily married woman with two children who is the sole breadwinner as the head of a primary school, I shook my head repeatedly at her downright idiotic actions. But if truth be told, people don’t change. Her penchant for poker, the thrill of winning and bluffing has been with her from the get-go.The person causing all the current upsets in her life by threatening to expose her for the fraud that she is, was, in my opinion, obvious early on. I failed to sympathise with her and was perplexed as to why she’d return to Manchester where much of what she was covering up took place and having a FaceBook account was ridiculous.The lesson of this book is that you cannot outrun your past. When you tell a lie or keep a secret, it will become necessary to tell another lie and cover up more and more until you lose control.If someone asks you for honesty and you agree, but fail to deliver, do not be surprised to be called out and have your life crash down around you.A smaller part of the book tells the story of Tom Douglas but this did not interest me nor add to the main story.Four stars.
I am a huge fan of Rachel Abbott’s books and this book certainly didn’t disappoint. Meet Anna, she is a normal, slightly boring wife mother and head teacher. Her marriage is solid and built on a foundation of trust and honesty, or is it?. Like most of us Anna made some unwise decisions in college. Most of us are fortunate enough to move on and forget them but Anna is being haunted by hers 15 years later. I love books that explore how ordinary people react in extraordinary situations and Anna is so relatable it made The Shape of Lies even more thrilling and intriguing. I literally couldn’t put this book down, each chapter unveiled a new layer in the mystery and I simply had to know all of the answers.
I normally love this author's work, but the storyline was just over-the-top unbelievable. The main character has to be the most dim-witted woman on the planet to get caught up in the lies and extortion she did in her youth. One trip to the police would have ended the whole thing, but instead, we are lead to believe she has to flee to another country to sell her baby (for an amount that was no where even close to what a baby would go for on the black market) to pay off the debt her boyfriend built up gambling? Moreover, the whole loan shark story, of a $300 per month interest rate that in only 12 years (including interest on the interest) leaves her BILLIONS in debt was beyond ludicrous. The author apparently lacks basic math skills. I've never wished harm on the main character, but all this woman did was whine about her secrets while people around her are getting hurt when a tip to law enforcement could have brought the whole thing to an end as dozens of other victims were out there.
I am an avid reader and this book was so exciting and so thrilling that I don't think I'll be able to find another book to match it or even come close . Rachel Abbott is an excellent writer . This book had me on the edge of my seat and I had to take deep breaths in order to continue to read it it was just that fantastic ! I give it 10 stars and hope everyone buys it because it is the best book she's ever written not to mention the best book again that I have read
This book was outstanding! My favorite of Rachel Abbott's books. I started it today and finished it at 4am. It was that good. The characters were believable and the suspense kept me going until I finished. Lots of twists and turns and a kick a-- ending. Best read of 2019 so far!
I normally love Rachel Abbott's books, but this story was all over the place, there were too many side stories going on and it wasn't believable in my opinion.I was disappointed.
As closely as I follow the Tom Douglas series I could not connect with this story. The plot was discombobulated and simply beyond belief. And where did Nebraska come from? A female reader might find this book more identifiable than her male counterpart. I'll be waiting patiently for Tom Douglas' next case.
I pre-order everything from Rachel Abbott because she never lets me down. This is the latest in her DI Tom Douglas series, and it's a ton of fun. An original, twisty mystery with some very interesting quirks. Love this writer, I've read all her books and am impatient for the next one. Thank you Rachel!

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Another great installment in the Pine Grove series. I loved Dawson and Celine. These two are complete opposites, she's a good girl in every sense of the word and Dawson is, sexy, mysterious, and dangerous in more ways than one. When Dawson sees Celine working at Hammy's, he smitten and wants her which is a foreign feeling for him, it's been a while since he's had that wanton feeling. Striking up conversation with Celine turns into so much more. Dawson doesn't share much of his personal life and there's a reason for it. He's not a good man, but deep down he's got a heart of gold. Only he's running from his past and it's about to catch up to him and they will both be in danger. Loved this book, the series is awesome, highly recommend this book and I can't wait to see what's next.

He tries to blend in, but his past soon catches up with him, when he least expects it.Celine works at the only bar in town called Hammy's she moved from the Midwest to start over and when she sees Dawson for the first time, she instantly attracted to him. She ends up losing her virginity, but gets caught up in something that she never would have expected. Dawson is dangerous, but gentle as well. The sex scenes were intense. He's a gentle Alpha and he's anti- hero. He follows his own rules and wants Celine to be in his future. Can she adapt to his life?I received an ARC for a honest review.

Or several.22 year old Celine has been in town for a week and lands a job trending bar at Hammy's the only bar in town.Enter mysterious 35 year old Dawson who came to town a few months earlier and bought a house with cash.When Celine agrees to go home with Dawson, she is expecting to lose her virginity to the older man. She gets a lot more than she bargained for.Filthy, steamy, really dark romance. I can't stress that enough. If you aren't into dark storylines, try one of BB Hamel's other books.HEA, standalone, no cheating.I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy.
I have read a lot of this author's work but this one did not do the work justice. Was not as good. The plot was like something I've read before. I just wasn't happy with this one. The epilogue was not really an ending either. Just didn't work for me.
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.In this book we meet Celine Booth and Dawson Spark. Celine has just moved to town and the last person she every expected to meet is a man named Dawson. One look and she is hooked one touch and she can feel the sparks. Dawson knows he shouldn't have walked into that bar that night. Once he did he should have walked away from her. There is just something about her though that draws him to her. They both have secrets and if they come to light it will be possibly deadly for them both. They wonder will being together make them more or destroy them both?This is another amazing hit by this author. It does have its ups and downs that I really want to tell you about. However I don't want to ruin the surprises for any other readers. I will say this book will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Celine is a 22 year old virgin working as a bartender. Dawson is much older at 35, he moved to Pine Grove six months ago from New York. When Dawson walks into the bar were Celine works she knows he's different from any of the locals in town and when Dawson sees her he knows he must have her. This was a fabulous read. Well written with interesting characters and an engaging storyline. The story had secrets, passion/lust and plenty of steam. If you like dark romance, this is a must read.I received an advanced readers copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
Pine Grove continues to be a haven for darkness. I love that our hero Dawson has a dangerous past. Too bad he couldn't outrun it. Celine was a strong character that only got better as the story evolved and I liked that. The ending had me scratching my head- Really? But it was so perfect! I liked that the author chose not to include children/babies in this story. It's not a story for kids. Good call. I'm liking seeing the darkness this author is bringing to storylines as of late. Keep it up. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and am giving an honest review.

Reminders include what should be brought to the wedding, things you might not think of, such as aspirin, band aids, and tape.You can discover what type of bridesmaid you are type A with a spread sheet, the romantic, and the reluctant among others. Body types are included and advice on what to wear.This would help anyone that is a bridesmaid - 1st time or 20th, including the bride. The book is pretty good. It was the third publication and the newest volume but did find a discrepancy about beautiful Crane Beach. She states that "Crane Beach is overused by the timeshare above", and also stated the only way down to the beach is to pay. This is not the case. There is a road that runs down right to the beach and you climb over hugh bolders that have stepping pavers on top. Others obviously knew about the road since there were using it. This may be picky but I don't want other to miss this beach. All in all it's a good book.
Book was good enough for what I needed it for. If I was there for a longer time it would not have sufficed.

Extremely disappointed by this book. If you have never read any books on the subject of healing through nutrition, then this book might open your eyes. However that's all it would do. There are no practical solutions provided to a beginner in this book. I have read many books on health and nutrition and this book did NOT tell me anything I already knew. There are no shocking revelations the vets didn't tell us for me. There are much better and more through books out there on the subject of nutrition and dog health.
Just like doctors, most vets tend to continue with the same practices they were taught in the the beginning. When new discoveries are made about common practices, a good vet will reconsider their methods and try alternatives when the situation warrants it. Most of all, like this book states, we need to consider what we do as pet owners that contribute to the diseases our pets are being afflicted with. Only a vet who is truly concerned with the health of your animal and not so much the health their pocketbook would tell you the things she does here. Dr. Sutter has many good things to say, if you love your animals, read this book.
We have had the serious advantage of being guided in caring for our beloved dog by Dr. Odette for a few years, and it's great now that vast audiences will have access through this book. Just as the people medical care system is failing its patients, pets are also being over prescribed medications and procedures that are damaging when there are simpler, more intuitive and natural ways that work better. This is a simple and fast read full of useful information. My dogs are my family and I will do anything to keep their health at its optimal level. By following the advice she gives in the book, you will not only save money on vet bills in the long run but also learn about how the vet industry has changed and the things they will never tell you because it will take from their bottom line. I am fortunate to have found Dr. Suter when my dog hurt her back and was on antibiotics and steroids for quite some time from her regular vet. After seeing Dr. Suter my dog no longer needed medicine, she did acupuncture and chiropractic care and her pain went away. She truly cares about every single animal and it's apparent in this book and in her care.

After bouncing from vet to vet for years we finally found Dr. Suter. Inside of 2 months Charlie's issues we're pretty much resolved. If you care for your pet I highly recommend you read this book. Michael S. Engel is a Research Affiliate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He is also University Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Senior Curator of Entomology at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Dr. Engel is the coauthor of Evolution of the Insects, and author of numerous entomological treatises. He has been to 40 countries, north of the Arctic Circle and down to the equator in tropical rain forests, in search of living insects and ancient fossils. He lives in Lawrence, KS. The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1869, the Museum has pursued its mission—to discover, interpret, and share information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe—through a broad program of scientific research, education, and exhibition. First, I gave this book Five Stars because the book is beautiful and should receive that rating. What is too bad is how it was simply put in a "larger than the book"box with absolutely NO packing material. That means that this heavy, hardback book bounced all over in shipment resulting in corners that were damaged and "dinged." It's really amazing the book isn't damaged more than it is. I guess the thinking is that a heavy book isn't breakable, but it is still easily damaged so just a bit of something to cusion and keep the book stable would have been helpful. ☹
If you love nature and have books filled with beautiful photos, like me, here's something unique: a gorgeous volume illustrated with 300 years of lithographs, etchings and paintings of the most diverse organisms in the history of life, the insects. It's printed on a heavy, very smooth matte paper, and reproduces the original plates in exquisite detail and gorgeous colors. The plates are from rare volumes, depicting idealized versions of an absolute riot of insects. My favorites are from an 1804 volume by Julius Ratzeburg on forest insects; each of his plates shows the sequence of life stages of an insect munching away on its host plant, along with its anatomical details, unlike any photograph could ever portray. Even the plates of lice are beautiful. Chapters are based on major themes like flight, metamorphosis, and sociality, and the writing is very engaging. I particularly like the vignettes of early entomologists. There is of course Maria Sibylla Merian, who spent 1699-1701 in the forests of Suriname painting her observations of insect life histories. And one Charles Butler, minister, early apiculturist, and author of the 1609 The Feminine Monarchie, who wrote a madrigal based on the sounds from his hives. Ulisse Aldrovandi's 1602 book was the earliest insect text, which presented a surprisingly accurate evolutionary tree of insects. Aldrovandi was also the Pope's advisor on dragons and considered himself another Aristotle. This is stuff that could only have been authored by Michael Engel, perhaps the most knowledgeable entomologist in the world and a true polyhistor. The volume is very high quality, remarkably affordable, and totally delightful.
If you are interested in the evolution of insects, this is the best volume out there for the lay reader. Engel is a world-famous scientist in the field. He also knows how to write with insight for the lay reader -- an uncommon trait for those in his field. Terrific illustrations. Excellent gift book for the holidays.
