About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner, Ph.D. has been Professor of Art History and Archeology at Boston University for four decades. He taught previously at University of Virginia and served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Acclaimed for inspiring lectures, Dr. Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities and the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. My art history professor recommended we purchase an older edition essentially it has the same information as the newer edition except for some minor things and coloring of images. The textbook was easy to read and understand, I had already purchased volume I for my previous art history course and now it was required that I purchased volume II. The condition of the book was obviously used, but in a good to average condition. I found some notes on a paper inside the book with I found to be helpful and nice to be surprised with some useful notes by someone else. It provides a well understanding of the different style period and historical background, I can see myself later on referring back to the book for review. It is a good book and pretty cheap considering the newer versions out there.
This is what they consider "good" condition. Received the book today, and I just want it noted that the condition is less than good. It's such a big textbook, required for class, that I'm afraid the cover isn't going to stay in tact through December.
College students be advised -- this is a facsimile exact copy of the hardcopy text (15e) -- more like a PDF of the textbook, which is key because the page numbers and layout are identical to the hard copy version. Only drawback is that some images are not reproduced due to copyright limitations, and I wish there was a more intelligent system of hyperlinks included for vocab, artist and place names, etc.
Been using this book for 5 years now with my AP students. It is thorough and easy to read. I can't say that it's always a "fun" journey, but compared to other texts I've read, it packs a ton of useful contextual information in very digestable parts. Several of my students have told me that they've learned more about world history from this book and class than any of their other history classes combined! The images are of exceptional quality with excellent supplemental information in each chapter. The timeline fold out is great, but I've never really checked out the accompanied CD. If I had my drothers, I would drop a few 20th century artists and add a few others, i.e., Pierre Bonnard, Ad Reinhardt, Richard Diebenkorn Richard Estes, Beth Murray and Sean Scully to name a few. Considering that this is not the latest edition, it is a bit pricey new, but good used versions seem to show up on here at pretty affordable rates.
This textbook was a requirement for an intro class to Art History I took a few years back. The book was dense with information so if you purchase be aware that notes will be your saving grace and best friend. More than anything it was a comprehensive, detailed and somewhat accurate but tinged with an air of drama that detailed the wars fought and won to secure the certain country or tribes ascent or descent into power. With a special focus on work and purity this book delves into the gray area of war with an unanticipated detail that sets it apart from other editions.
I bought this as a textbook for an Art History class. Clear, concise, informative and READABLE text. Every other art history text I've used was dry reading, not so with this one. The photos are sharp, colorful, and well-explained in the captions. Highly recommend!
Though I purchased the paperback and not the hardbound edition for my art history class, I am not disappointed. The pictures and the binding are great, and the text is straightforward. Family members not taking the art history class have enjoyed reading it, as well. This was the required text for my class, but if you were just interested in the subject, this is an awesome book.
After 4 years of nursing school and now attending art school I have seen a good amount of books. This book Gardner's Art through the ages is probably the only college text book other than my anatomy book I will keep.The hard cover is manufactured like many older books I have. The pages are heavy stock with beautiful colored images on it. It comes with 2 silk binding bookmarks, which is fantastic for quick reference. I actually leave this book out on my coffee table for guests to look at, its that good.If you need this book for class, you might just want to keep it when you are done with the class. The images are small on some pages. Like I said before the text is more inline with quick reference, like a coffee table book. One of my classes required that I make an outline of a chapter of any of our books. I chose this one and the outline I made, made logical sense.I have spent many hours with this book and while not perfect it is a very well made book. No book today can compete with the internet as a source. Instead they must condense the points the class is trying to achieve; to that end this book does a fine job.Yes the photos could be larger, yes you can find more information about a piece out on the web, that will always be the case as books go away and we go completely electronic. Until that time books are required for school and if you are required to get this text I cannot think of a better book to buy and keep.Thank you for reading my review.

I have read many books about Chernobyl, from dry scientific texts to often silly fictional accounts of its aftermath, yet this young author has done the best job of all of them, offering a simple-yet-accurate description of how Chernobyl's RBMK reactors worked and, ultimately, how one of them critically failed. But there is much more here than a factual account of what happened 30 years ago at the V. I. Lenin power plant. Mr. Leatherbarrow shares his deepest feelings about what he encounters on his all-too-short journey to Pripyat and the plant itself. His descriptions are excellent and without pretense, and, above all, his narrative never gets bogged down. His unpretentious and even-handed treatment of the main players in this oft told story is very refreshing. And I was deeply moved by his emotional responses to what he saw and experienced; I think that I too would have wept as I left this compelling place behind. In the final analysis, Andrew put together a superbly told story that turned out to be of sufficient length to ensure that the reader "got it" without going on and on with repetitious and unnecessary details. Simply put, it was an excellent read, and I found it hard to believe that this was his first book. I certainly hope it won't be his last.
I'd like to give this 3.5 stars, not quite 4 and not quite 3. First the good: The material is incredibly well researched. The documentation of his sources is terrific, though hard to follow in the Kindle edition (not the author's fault). I was fascinated by the recounting of events leading up to the disaster, the heart-breaking stories of those who sacrificed their health if not their lives, and his impressions of Chernobyl today. Now the bad: Leatherbarrow admits he is not a writer and this proves to be true. I found myself wanting to take a red pencil to many of his sentences. He credits the staff of Reddit for helping edit the book. In my opinion, the manuscript could have used even more rigorous editing. There were whole paragraphs repeated almost word for word in different chapters of the book. His account of exploring an abandoned British installation, though interesting, was unrelated to the overall story. The nighttime stroll through Kiev (part of his trip to Chernobyl) really wasn't relevant to the subject matter either. I would still recommend this book for those interested in the Chernobyl crisis, though be prepared to get jarred occasionally by the writing and organization of the material.
I've been interested in Chernobyl for many years and finally decided to purchase a book to read about it. This is a truthfully written, well researched book written by someone not from the area where the disaster occurred but someone who had been moved enough by the topic to write something honest after visiting and researching and reading about the event for many years. What makes this more believable than many accounts of the disaster is that the author stated most early accounts shortly after the disaster and for many years thereafter were untrue and inaccurate. Most of disturbing was the Soviet attitude regarding what should have been the safety of it's citizens. Citizen safety was not a priority to the Soviet government even prior to Chernobyl. There were other little known emergency events in other nuclear plant locations in the then USSR. What was stated to the public shortly after the disaster and even years later in documents after the trial of those in charge at Chernobyl during the event were classified to the residents of the Ukraine and surrounding area. The citizens were fed whatever the government chose to tell them, and it was not the truth about what really happened. This is a great book for someone interested in reading about Chernobyl. It is technical in a few places but still easily understood. Very well written and I suspect, more trustworthy than other earlier publications on the same subject.
A self-published amateur effort that does a better, more readable, job on the disaster than many professional accounts I have read. Yes, for technical information, do make use of other sources, but understand that those sources will have little of the human drama a non-technical reader might be looking for. I was doubtful of the usefulness of such a book, given that Mr. Leatherbarrow is not a scientist or engineer and does not speak Russian. I decided to give his book a read based on the recommendation of another self-published person, a retired engineer (caveat: in addition to being professionally published, I, too, am a self-published author). Making use of nearly all the translated Russian accounts, both personal and technical, he has succeeded. He makes the functioning of the reactor and its disaster very clear, and parallels the Chernobyl experience with Fukushima and Three Mile Island. His brief history of the development of the reactor gives a very good account of the decisions that set the wheels in motion that moved into tragedy. The story of the aftermath, which is still being written, is made more real by his own visit to Chernobyl and the surrounding area. If you can only get one book on the disaster, then make it this one.
I have read many nonfictional accounts of this monster disaster as it both terrifies and mystifies me yet today. Yet, this account is simply one of the easiest and quickest reads on the disaster that I have encountered. I guess at 54 years old; I am living vicariously through the author's account. I find him, for a non-expert, to be very attuned and very informed having done his research well. I like that he has instilled a freshness into the subject in an easy to understand manner. I also like that he has flips back-and-forth between his longing for his quest while sharing his trek across the haunting landscapes of Slavutych, Kiev, Chernobyl, and the ghostly wonders of Pripyat. His inclusion of his photographs and technical diagrams makes the book that much more enthralling. This is a wonderful effort from a guy who appears to have footed the bill for publication of his book on his own dime.

A story of Africa and a story of the bond between sisters...what's not to love. This book gives you the ending first, then explains the how's and the why's. The sisters are flawed sometimes and heroic at other times but you will enjoy their company - it's never boring. To my knowledge it is historically accurate and therefore informative. In the end you will cry but that's good for you unless you have to be somewhere before your eyes recover. ...and then you must call your sister.
It took me a long time to read a story of life in Zimbabwe, just couldn't bring myself to go down that road for a long time. Wendy Kaan captured what life was like there perfectly in all its great beauty and difficulties and then all the feelings of moving to America she had were exactly the way my family felt when we moved here and still feel sometimes. The book was very moving and some pages I just could not bring myself to read. It made me feel that I am not crazy feeling the way I did when I moved to the States, and almost every Zimbabwean or South African I have met share similar feelings - Wendy just put it across so eloquently. I wanted to know though, what happened to her sisters little boy - it left me hanging there.
I tucked into 'Casting with a Fragile Thread', convinced that nobody could write as moving a book on life in my childhood country than Peter Godwin. But within 20 pages, I was proved wrong. I was entranced by the book; utterly absorbed and enthralled by its emotional depth and verbal accuracy on our privileged but oftentimes tragic childhoods in what was then Rhodesia. I happened to know Wendy's family - and I visited Bien Donne on play dates with Wendy and her sister, Sharon. My mom was their piano teacher. I watched the tragedy of these sensitive girls' lives unfold - and every time when I thought it couldn't get worse - it did. Learning of Lauren's death in this book, and reading how the girls' love for each other has gotten them through the toughest parts of life, I was utterly moved. This book is a testiment to the things that are precious in life. The language is beautiful; the descriptions vivid, and Wendy's sensitivity and growth are an inspiration to anyone who has encountered tragedy and pain. In her case, she's emerged a beautiful human being - inside and out. Even if I weren't from Zimbabwe - seeking a nostalgia trip - I'd still have loved the book. I highly recommend it.
I grew up in Rhodesia and therefore this was like reading about my own life. How similar and tragic. I wept a lot as I was reminded how fragile life is. How we love Africa, , all the sounds and scents settled deep in our bones.
One of the most engaging memoirs of Africa I have read. I will recommend it to my friends. Although learning about peoples around the world enlightens us, unfortunately humanity doesn't learn to tolerate these differences. It seems man's quest for power and innate desire to kill in order to accomplish their goals go beyond rational thought or action.June Kennedy

This book is a good introduction to the roles of the players and the skills they have to learn. It would be suitable for someone new to playing rugby and wanting an overview, or a spectator wanting to learn more about what they are watching. There probably isn't enough detail in the descriptions for players wanting to improve their technique.The book is loaded full of colour photographs of rugby players in action, mostly from New Zealand domestic matches and international matches. One thing I would have liked is more diagrams supporting the text (even in exchange for some of the photos). There are hardly diagrams at all.The text is well-written and easy to understand.

This is a great book for any rugby player to have in his library. It covers many details of the game that will be enlightening to many players, specially the developing rugby player. The illustrating photographs are unmatched by any other books!
A little background on me: I started becoming interested in rugby when a friend from Australia talked about it. I had seen a few matches on Fox Sports World, and was interested in actually learning something about the sport.So I acquired this book. I have stumbled (I might say accidentally, as it was the only rugby book my local library branch had on the shelf) on a fantastic book about learning the game of rugby.I started out by picking and choosing through the book like I would with most books, but quickly became lost in a dense forest of strange terminology. Rucks, mauls, line-outs, scrums, knock-ons, etc. So I started over from the beginning, and found the book delightfully easy to read, and quite explanatory. I would recommend that anybody new to rugby do the same thing. It has a huge number of great pictures, (many of them of Jonah Lomu, All-Black and now Wellington Hurricane). The pictures explain what's going on quite well. In less than a month, I knew at least as much about the game of rugby than my Australian friend who has been watching it for years (as he himself admits). It allows you to quickly scale the wall of terminology and get on to the meat of the game.Speaking of the meat of the game, it also has a good dose of strategy. NOTE: Somebody expressed their disappointment at my review misleading him. I apologize for that, but let me be clear: I was a complete rugby novice when I read this book, not knowing the difference between a scrum and a line-out. They provide strategy useful for the kind of complete tyro that I was; what was useful for me at the time would not be for a rugby player. Some examples: in describing knock-ons it suggests when you shouldn't even try to catch the ball, and what to do instead. It also, in describing the different types of passes, talks about which would be most useful and when, and describes the role of the scrum-half. And I finally, thanks to this book's clear descriptions, understand why they always kick penalty kicks from inside their own 22 directly into touch.I only have a few minor gripes with the book. First, it is not at all clear on penalties. It has the standard list of laws in the back, which is good, but it does not explain the laws other than that. In almost every other area of the game, its clear and descriptive text really makes the rules themselves jump out at you. There is also not even a one-page pictures of official's hand signals, which would be useful to those of us who watch games and wonder "so what's he calling now?"Second, although it has a plethora of pictures, it does not have a single picture of a ruck. Since the difference between rucks and mauls and the associated strategies is rather important, it would have been useful to see at least one picture of what one actually looks like. And given the otherwise clear and helpful use of pictures I am surprised to find this shortcoming. (My Australian friend is also somewhat confused about rucks and mauls so I have to think confusing the distinction is not unusual. I would like to know the difference, however.) Hopefully in future editions this will be cleared up.Finally, it would be useful to give an overview of the different types and leagues of rugby played. For example, the book is completely about Rugby Union (although it does not use the term), but it would be useful to at least admit that Rugby League exists and basically distinguish it from Union. To anybody who really knows rugby, of course, there is no confusion (my Australian friend was somewhat baffled at my confusion - "Why, they're completely different games!") but I think to newcomers the distinction needs to be made clear. It also doesn't give a lot of description of different teams and groups ("what's a Wallaby?"). To somebody who wants an overall introduction to the game and has not been around rugby all his life, descriptions along these lines would be very useful.Other than these small nits, this is a great book and I highly recommend it to anybody wanting to learn about the game.
The book is very handy and actually has nice photographs, but it is targeted to a novice or a "fresh start" rugby enthusiast. Keeping this point in mind, it is a remarkable work, both in style and guise, because skills, tactics and rules are clearly explained.The text is simple but quite serious, hence being rugby an "informal" sport, a better explanation should be devised for some particular events during the match. The lineout is a typical example: in fact the rule, which permit an aided 6-foot plus gentleman to hover in the air waiting for the oval, must have been thought up by a three-quarter who flew Harriers (the famous vertical landing fighter airplane!). This strange engagement is characterized by a devastatingly human exertion, that is the pathological damage this may cause the unsuspecting jumper's groin when his shorts is pulled sharply upwards by two herculean "thrusters"! So far for the tactics!!Another amusing rule too seriously explained is when the front rows collapse during a set scrum. The refree (the usual scapegoat for italian fans!!!) gives a penalty against the prop that goes down first. He may be the less potent of the two, the more tired or simply could quite easily have slipped, but no!, the sanction is quick,steadfast and irrevocable: he did on purpose, shame on him! Since the international refrees are not robust specimen of human race, with large diameter trunks and necks, they wrongfully suppose that above huge necks there is little capacity for gray matter. So the modern prop will use this misconception to his advantage when there is a scrum nearby the Opposition try line. Thus, by all means, usually illegal, he will check the opposite prop's thrust while collapsing, therefore automatically gaining a penalty kick from the best position ever. That's what we call a teamwork!!That said, I will recommend this volume to anyone interested in this wonderful game, but getting in touch with its rules for the first time.
"Rugby Skills, Tactics, and Rules" is a nice introduction to the great sport of rugby. It is concise, well-illustrated and laid out, and manages to convey the excitement of playing and watching the sport.As noted on here by other reviewers, this is not really the book to get if you're already familiar with the sport and are looking for detailed guidance on things like coaching strategies, training, or taking your game to the next level. It's the kind of book you'd buy for someone who was interested in starting to play, but who didn't really know anything about the sport. However, while this book is nice, I must say that by far the best book to get for someone who wants to learn how to play is Tony Biscombe's "Rugby: Steps to Success".Good luck on your rugby adventure.

The book is written by Kirsten Hunter who is an API evangelist who helps developers and business stakeholders understand, design, and deliver APIs. The book is intended to all members of an API design team, regardless of technical level.Irresistible APIs is not bad book per Se. However when sometime ago my friend experienced Java developer was surprised why book related to webAPI has so may pages, at that time I was thinking that he only concentrate at technical part and there the topic is not so narrow. After reading the book I see that he was right to some extent. First the author describes basics of REST API in quite nice way. Then book suddenly starts it prolonged advocacy part.The book is not so technical, there are a lot advocacy in it and good arguments why approach API First is so important. And explanation why API added as extra feature is a very bad design decision. And also there are examples from business point of view describing how good and bad decisions had influence on companies like Netflix, Twitter etc. Of course it is very valuable from business point of view and advocacy. Agreeing with all of that I was reading next pages seeking when "the meat" part eventually will start. And it passed more than half of book with that advocacy style. Of course everything towards understanding how important creating of good API is. For companies for their third party clients and so on. I can agree with everything but it is pretty verbose.Then author describes how to create good APIs and she proofs that using good user cases/stories is good approach, again agree. Then she introduces several designing API schemas tools like Open API (Swagger). In book there are several exercises which are intended to put reader hands on practical subject which is good. In case of using schema designing frameworks it lacks points where user is generating stubs and can use it.Then authors starts to pack in a stuff which seems to be only to increase volume of book. So describing methodology like DDD, waterflow, agile and so on.This is yet another book when I have impression that would be better if it had less pages, be less verbose and to the point. And I would like to have impression. Yes I spent a lot of time with book but I've learned a lot. I have grown.Here from technical point of few there is a lot to add. From advocacy yes I've learned a lot of arguments why good API is crucial.So if such arguments are very important for reader or maybe will be eye opener. Go ahead.
This book has pretty much everything that you need to know about APIs (what are they, how to use them, best practices, do and don't). I definitely enjoy examples that were provided and various strategies that the author suggested on how to make best use of them. No question that the author has tons of knowledge in this area, and this book is def all you need to construct s very solid and secure APIwhy not 5 stars? I felt that the book could have been shorter... the last two sections about DDD and types of def environments, dont belong in this book in my opinion... I mean wont hurt to know them, but if i want to learn about API, i should learn about it from this book and if I want to know more about DDD, i should get a book that covers DDD in detail. So this book should have been 140 pages max, if so.
Very disappointed in this book. I did not expect a highly technical book, per the description. But I expected more help fitting my needs/situation into an API framework. The author spends some time talking about noun/resource based APIs, but moves over to talking about other types of APIs without pointing out what considerations make other choices valid. I would like: clear differentiation between API and RESTful API (API sometimes meant the more specific RESTful API - and sometimes not), clearer legends or more uniformity to drawings (some drawings have boxes, some cylinders, some just lists - which is the API server, which are individual APIs, which are clients), and a better sample API. The sample API implementation at the demo website does not keep "pizza toppings" with a user - so "my pizza" is being created and changed by any number of people. Would have been good to demonstrate here linking to a database of available toppings, storing a pizza with a user with and without logging in (registered/guest users), etc.

Be aware that this book doesn't tackle specific technologies to implement APIs. This book is intended to be accessible to anyone interested on the topic of creating APIs. So if you are an individual developer or technical lead, through product and project managers, and up to executives directing engineering organizations you will find valuable content on this book and start implementing Irresistible APIs!

When I think about Albania, which is not often, I usually think about Communist dictator Enver Hoxha and the hundreds of thousands of reinforced concrete pillboxes he scattered around Albania, preparing for the imminent assault of the imperialists. Other than that, if I’m in a historical mood, I think about Skanderbeg, the Sixteenth Century freedom fighter against the conquering Ottomans. If I’m thinking about the modern era, maybe I think about Mother Teresa, or on a less exalted level, Jim Belushi. I don’t, or didn’t, think about Venice, or Lepanto, or Jesuits, or any of the very interesting, and even exciting, places, people, and happenings Noel Malcolm covers. This book, however, has changed my perspective.Malcolm’s book, "Agents of Empire," surveys the complex world of the eastern Adriatic and Mediterranean, mostly during the second half of the Sixteenth Century. His story revolves around a single Albanian family not prominent in history, the Bruni/Bruti family, and several now-obscure towns and cities, divided between Venetian and Ottoman control, on the eastern shore of the Adriatic (Ulcinj, Bar, Kotor, Durrës). Most of this territory is now Albania; a small bit is Montenegro or Croatia. The Bruni/Bruti families were intimately connected with this territory and played important roles in the tumultuous events that affected it during this time.Venice today is an overcrowded, baroque tourist trap. Four hundred years ago it was, if not a global power, a power in the Mediterranean world, and a key player in international trade and interchange. As the maritime power closest to the Ottomans, and with a land border between the territory it dominated and the Ottomans, it had the most to lose, and sometimes the most to gain, from the inevitable conflicts with the expanding Ottomans. Of course, the Venetians had been imposing their will in this same area for hundreds of years—it was their diversion of the Fourth Crusade in 1202 to attack Zara, also on the Adriatic coast, that undermined that Crusade; and then the re-direction of the Crusade under Venetian pressure, to Constantinople, that caused catastrophic results. So, in many ways, the wars of Venice in this book are merely a continuation of the necessary wars of empire—after all, Venice was a relevant power for nearly a thousand years, an impressive record but one that required constant defense.The Bruti/Bruni family is not famous at all. Malcolm found a reference to a “lost†manuscript history of Albania and the surrounding area, supposedly written by one Antonio Bruti, and spent quite a bit of time looking for it. He ultimately found it and, pulling on the string and plowing through archives, fleshed out the story of this family (though as he says, a lot is still buried in archives). Since the family had several individuals with highly varied roles, looking through the prism of their lives gives an excellent flavor of the times.Part of the Bruni/Bruti family originated in Durrës. They were important and powerful there prior to the events of this book, but lost most of what they had when the Ottomans conquered the town in 1501, turning it Muslim and into a corsair lair. What was left of the family fled north to Ulcinj, then still a Venetian town. Until the latter stages of this book, the focus is these towns on the eastern Adriatic shore—small, ancient, towns with proud aristocrats; the usual conflict between them and the other classes, especially rising merchants; international trade; and their foreign policy and defense, caught between the Venetians and the Ottomans. Much of the story here revolves around service provided by members of the Bruni and Bruti families to Venice, and to a lesser extent to the Papacy and the Knights of Malta, accompanied by later involvement with the Ottomans as dragomans in Istanbul and as high-level functionaries in the Ottoman principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (which today, roughly, along with Transylvania stolen from Hungary in 1919, form modern Rumania).One family member, Antonio Bruti, who wrote the manuscript the author found, spent his life as a factotum for Venice, ultimately receiving high rewards and accolades from the city for his work, which served his descendants and relatives in good stead. His brother-in-law, Giovanni Bruni, was an archbishop, attended the Council of Trent (where he had dealings with Charles Borromeo, later Archbishop of Milan and my patron saint), was made a galley slave by the Ottomans and killed at the Battle of Lepanto (along with his nephew). Giovanni’s brother, Gasparo, became a Knight of Malta. Malcolm provides a fascinating description not just of the military activities of the Knights, but their economic activities, the process of admission and the internal politics of the Knights. Gasparo Bruni became captain of the papal flagship at the Battle of Lepanto and later fought for the papacy in Avignon during the Huguenot Wars, ultimately dying in his bed at an advanced age. His son, Antonio, became a Jesuit (then a new and vigorous order), studying in Rome.During this period, the late Sixteenth Century, the Ottomans continued to expand, fighting (yet another) war with Venice, resulting in the capture of Ulcinj and its conversion to a Muslim town (as it is today), after killing much of the population despite a guarantee of safe conduct given in exchange for the city’s surrender. More Brutis and Brunis died here. Those that remained moved to Istria, to Koper (Capodistria), still under Venetian control. From here the only Bruti reasonably well known to history, Bartolomeo, son of Antonio, began his career as a diplomat and functionary for the Spanish and Venetians, especially in negotiations and dealings with the Ottomans (his role in Istanbul was mostly indistinguishable from that of a spy). This role was greatly assisted by the on-again off-again Grand Vizier of this period, Sinan Pasha, not only being Albanian but related in an obscure, but relevant, way to Bartolomeo (probably as a cousin by marriage of some sort). The English also begin to appear at this point, where Elizabeth I was negotiating with the Sultan in order to gain traction against their common enemy, the Spanish Habsburgs, and Bartolomeo had dealings with them as well.Bartolomeo moved to Moldavia and became the chief lieutenant of the voivode (appointed by the Sultan—Moldavia was self-governing but in effect a satrapy of the Ottomans and a pawn in conflicts with the Poles and the Cossacks, the Ottomans having conquered most of Hungary and turned Transylvania into a separate state until it was later reunited with Hungary). But Bartolomeo came out on the wrong side of a power struggle and didn’t leave town with the exiled voivode fast enough, so despite (or because of) his meteoric rise and accomplishment, he was strangled and thrown in the river by the new voivode at age 34 (apparently in part to avoid repaying a debt to him). His second cousin, Gasparo Bruni’s son Antonio, the Jesuit, served the exiled voivode in the Tyrol and died of disease at a relatively young age. Bartolomeo’s brother, Cristofero, became a dragoman, or interpreter, in Istanbul. This was an important office that frequently meant serving as a diplomat, not just as a mere interpreter. His relations and descendants served in this and similar offices for at least the next century; thus, the family ended intertwined with the Ottomans, rather than their opponents.If all this sounds complicated, it is. I’m simplifying it considerably. But then, real life is complicated, after all, and Malcolm does an excellent job of keeping the story moving along. One thing that comes through very clearly is the porous nature of borders and relations among peoples, and the key element of trade. War comes and goes, but under the surface, trade (especially in grain, critical to both the Ottomans and the Venetians) continues. Men seek glory, honor, and sinecures from the state for their services. Fortune’s Wheel turns, round and round.Along the way, few new lessons are learned. There is little or nothing in this book, thankfully, that can be tied to modern politics. If there is a lesson, it is a reinforcement of what we already know—in the world before our times, people died unexpectedly and young much more often than they do now. Most of the protagonists of this book seem to be on an arc of ever-greater success—and then they die. Some die in battle; some of disease; some of running afoul of the Sultan or some other powerful man. Maybe, probably, the knowledge of this spurred them on to greater efforts; it certainly did not seem to make them take easy and obvious steps to reduce the risk, like simply staying at home. No doubt they viewed life and the world differently than us, even though they for the most part they seem so similar to us. Reading about them, still, brings them close to us, and reminds us that although times change, people remain basically the same, in all their rich variation.
While I was surprised at how academic this book was - I was expecting something more popular - it is an absolutely excellent read. The context of the book is the period immediately following the apogee of the Ottoman Empire under Suleiman the Magnificent. The "plot", if you will, is an extended family over 2 generations of nobles from Albania, who make their careers involving virtually all the great powers of the Mediterranean.There were a number of powers operating the the region at that time. By far the most powerful, the Ottoman Empire was master of about 2/3 of the Mediterranean, combining man-power rich infantry and an enormous navy. Though Suleiman was turned back at Vienna and Malta, his Empire was regarded as unstoppable. His sea-based enemies included Venice, Spain, the Vatican territories, and the Habsburgs, who controlled southern Italy; they occasionally allied themselves, however suspicious they were of each other as their interests conflicted. For its part, France was more or less allied to the Ottomans, a tactical advantage to counter its enemies. One of the most interesting forces were the semi-autonomous forces that existed on the fringes of the empires, who paid some fealty to their superiors but were able to take actions under their own initiative and profit; these were the corsairs (kind of like pirates with a code, allied to patron states, e.g. the knights of Malta), nomads on the plain (Tatars, Cossacks, and many others).To put it mildly, this concatenation of forces made the Mediterranean a cauldron of intrigue and opportunity. Into this stepped the Bruti family, nobles who were not of the highest aristocracy. They were educated, energetic, and ambitious. Unfortunately for them, just as they were coming of age the Ottomans conquered their native region, which had been under Venetian suzerainty or outright control, depending on circumstances. It was a semi-savage area with many dangerous, autonomous tribes, one of those nexus points at which Slavic, Greek, and Albanian cultures met and mingled. In the beginning, there were 3 brothers: one a merchant spy for Venice, one a Knight of Malta (a military expert), and the other a Catholic bishop. The brothers dominate the first half of the book, which is framed around the decisive naval battle, Lepanto, marking the beginning of the decline of the Ottomans.The second half of the book is less focused as it covers the activities of their offspring, culminating is a rather obscure accomplishment of an influential pamphlet on the Ottomans written by one of them, making for a muted climax to say the least. (The pamphlet served as the original reaosn for Malcolm to discover the family.) Nonetheless, their careers offer truly unique insights into the kind of lives people led at that time. One of them started as an apprentice dragoman in Istambul, insinuating himself into the court with a family connection with Sinan Pasha, an Albanian cousin who was Grand Vizier several times; he reached the pinnacle of power in Wallachia as a kind of deputy viceroy, only to be deposed and murdered by the next voivod. The others are less spectacular, but almost always interesting as notables in their adopted town, Koper.This doesn't offer a general introduction to events or the biggest people, such as Suleiman the Magnificent, Philip II or Francois Premier. It also completely neglects culture. What the reader gets are details about the careers of more normal people, which makes for fascinating reading as they wend themselves into the great events of the day. You find the rise of the Jesuits from the inside; the Counter-Reformation wars in France from the point of view of a commanding participant; the rise and fall of Ragusa as an ally of Spain, to mention a few. So, if you are interested in anything from the grittiness of naval engagements, the political economy of corsaire organizations and institutions, and educational reforms to the intrigues of the Ottoman Court and the vagaries of courtier power in client states, this book is for you. Each chapter contains a story of how this family participated as major players.The book is not for everyone. There are a few dry patches in the book and it starts out rather slow. Beyond specialists, I would recommend it for history buffs who already know the outlines of the history. The writing is clear and often compelling.
It is hard to imagine how author Noel Malcolm managed to convert painstaking research into such a compelling and famously interesting volume. He spreads out for our benefit a rich feast of history, a history most of us have never poked around in or even thought much about. He takes a family prominent in the East side of the Adriatic Sea, actual people, who served the Queen city of Venice. And he writes so well that we avidly devour what in other hands would simply be dry bones.As scholar and wordsmith, Malcolm has the goods.
A well-written and well-researched book which provided a valuable look at the interconnections between the Ottomans and the rest of Europe, at the family and local levels and at the highest levels of governments. I was especially interested in the trade through the Mediterranean and how it showed what people used and consumed. Also fascinating was to see how religious interests and real-politik were balanced in international decisions. Not a book for everyone, but great for those who want details on life and trade and international politics during this rich period.
This book has taught me that there was so much more going on in the 1500s in Europe other than the plague, which is all they ever mentioned in school. Outside of taking a European history course, most people will probably not be familiar with the vast topics covered in this book. The use of personal writings and documentation shows a depth of research into the era that is refreshing and informative at the same time. Far from dry, this book takes you through generations of three interconnected families who found themselves involved in some of the highest levels of intrigue and maneuvering in Eastern Europe during this time. It is a gem! A great introduction for someone curious about the Ottomans, Venetians, etc.
