I could not wait to read this story. The anticipation building everyday from ordering to arrival. I was disappointed. Having heard so much about the first appearance of Spider-Gwen, the return of Peter Porker: The Spectacular Spider-Ham, but the story just did not capture me. Too much of the main story happened in the tie-in books so that is what I would suggest getting, the more expensive Spider-Verse omnibus. Wish I had now.
Let me start off by saying I never read comics, let alone buy them. My cup of tea is manga, so I figured it wouldn't be too different. I made an exception to buy this volume because I was interested in reading how Spiderman met SpiderGwen and getting to see more of her origins, so-to-speak. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say I was a bit disappointed in that regard. My only other complaint is that the story felt way too short/rushed, but that might just be how things are done in the comic industry. Other than that, the story was pleasantly entertaining and it was nice seeing Peter meet up with other versions of himself. It was also nice how the author included footnotes linking to other titles that would fill us in on more in-depth back story if we desired to dig deeper. The last positive comment I have was that I felt I really got my moneys worth for the price I paid (Kindle version) and with the content I received.
Dan Slott finally sold me on his version of Spider-Man. I don't like some of the outcomes [particularly how he weakened some of SM's abilities], but he made a believer out of this old Spidey fan. Let's see if he somehow screws that up...
If you want to read a spiderman story than pick this one it's start of the spider verse it extacly what you think and much more leaving you want to buy more trust me when reading this one I was just glued to this and the ending of it left me like WTF man I WANT more and just left me in my head With Great Powers Comes Great Responsibility and also you see some of the other Spider-Mans that you love from the other Demisons like 2099,noir and other AMAZING SPIDER MANS
While this arc is a bit chaotic, the atmosphere is dark and amazing. For fans of Spider-Man, this book gives a good look at how he compares against all of the other spiders, and Peter earns his place at the top with wit and courage. I'm excited to see where Silk and Spidey's relationship heads as well.
Perfect gift for Christmas. My son loves it!
They really need to release all the other Spider-Verse related titles in paperback, but this collection of the main story is solid.
Fun stuff with this spider-verse weaving. Fun story, fun adventures, and fun character interactions with this one. Not the worst thing in the world if you miss it though

This book has received some very good press, including Janet Maslin's review in the NY Times, but it's not as advertised and not what it's cracked up to be. First, the advertising (including on the covers and the flyleaves) makes it sound as though the book is about one man taking on the Chinese government to save an industry. There is some of that, but you don't get to it until the last third of the book, and even then it's really more about the man than the battle with China. And the part about the man is really little more than hero worship, even if the hero is sometimes difficult and cantankerous and off-putting - kind of a lovable John McCain. And because she admires the man so much ("with all his faults she loves him still"), she injects herself into the story way too much, so in some ways it's really all about her.The first two-thirds of the book is a family saga, the family in question being the Bassetts of furniture fame, and there is lots of family gossip that has little or nothing to do with the stated subject of the book. It's interesting reading, and because it's not all about Ms. Macy and her reverence for Mr. Bassett III, it's better in some ways than the part of the book dealing with the stated subject. She also ends the book with a sort of wrap-up of the family saga and the fact that III rose above it. I suppose he may be worth of the praise, but I prefer a bit of distance between the author and her subject, and it just doesn't happen here.
I read about this book in the "New York Times" a week or so ago and downloaded it this morning. It sounded like it shared some characteristics with other books I have enjoyed that explain some of the economic characteristics of different products and put them in a global context - books like "Extra Virgin" (about olive oil) and "Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy". I told myself I'd read the first chapter this morning, then put it down until tonight.I emerged six hours later.My god, this book is AMAZING. Everyone who cares about communities, or about the economy, must read it. It makes me want to question every decision we make about trade agreements, retail purchases, federal subsidies, labor laws, and tax policy. Thank heavens for Bassett, who didn't drink the Koolaid - and for Beth Macy, who has managed to humanize modern global economics and make it understandable for everyone.
When I first read about and heard about this book, I was sure I wanted to read it. I live in Southside Virginia. Before I moved here, DuPont and Tultex had closed. Since I’ve lived here, I’ve seen the closings of all the major companies that made this area the manufacturing powerhouse it was. Now that’ve read the book, I would highly recommend it as an explanation for how American jobs were handed over to foreign interests. We rolled over and played dead.The really good parts: Beth Macy did an excellent job of going step-by-step through what happened to the furniture industry that built this area, both in its heyday and in its capitulation to Asian manufacturing. Finally, someone talked about the out-sourcing of American jobs remembering the people who were hurt by them. These are people who will never have a job that good again before they retire. They were trained for factory work that doesn’t exist anymore. If they want a job that pays almost as well as the one they lost, they have to leave the area. Thousands already have. If other Americans think it isn’t coming to their towns, they’re wrong.Ms. Macy rightfully takes to task the economists in their ivory towers. They talk about the consumer getting a better deal by having cheaper products available to them. This kind of short-sighted thinking does not consider a major factor in this equation—consumers have to have jobs in order to consume. No job, no buying the cheap products that put them out of work. No buying, slow economy that takes a long time to recover. This ought to sound familiar to anyone listening to economic news these days.Even more telling was the comment made by the Asian who marveled that American capitalists would do anything for a buck, including give away their manufacturing knowledge and jobs. He said once they had these things, they wouldn’t be stupid enough to give them up.I appreciated her declaring at the beginning of the book her own biases—she was the daughter of factory workers in Ohio and had seen her own parents put out of work when the jobs were taken somewhere else. She acknowledged that she liked some of the main characters in the book more than others, including her admiration for John D. Bassett, III, the book’s main character. She pointedly remembered the folks others wouldn’t have remembered—the factory workers, especially the black ones, and the domestic workers of the factory owners.My one and only complaint was at the beginning of the book, when she talks about the history of the extended Bassett family, she put in every piece of gossip she was told. Macy wrote that the curator of the Bassett Heritage Center told her to. However, I thought she should have exercised a little more judgment. Some pieces of extended family history were just hurtful to no particular end. Some details were tawdry and unnecessary.That said, I would highly recommend the rest of the book.

Who knows what may be, or may not be, the true answer to this mystery.This book provides much more detail than one can obtain from the TV series, soon yes, I do recommend it as supplementary to what the TV series has to offer.I realize it was written with a younger audience in mind, but is still excellent in providing information to audiences of any age.Well done!

It's not perfect but has tons of content. One of the reviews said it has misinformation because it classifies humans as "carnivores", but some recent studie shave classified humans as such "based on the percentage of meat in the typical human diet". Well, I think is a very good answer for the audience the book is intended for. Why are some animals big and others small? Because there are all kinds of animals in the world, some big and some small. I think it's a perfectly valid answer. If your kid needs more information you can teach him about evolution for an hour if you want. You have to understand the purpose of this book is having a lot of questions and a lot of content. If they start going deeper into answers then that means less content. I rather have more questions with simple answers than a few questions with 3 pages of an answer.Finally, another reviewer seems to be confusing this book for something else and tries to show the "inaccuracies" but only comes off as a trying to display his knowledge of things. We get it, you know how to use wikipedia, guess what? This is a book for "KIDS", if you want to show off how much you know why don't you review a PHD book on physics?This is a great book with tons of content and my kid loves it. It's not perfect, but that's why you're there as a parent.
I love this book. I got it for my son's 4th birthday and we really enjoy going through it. I love the pictures and that it includes little experiments to show and teach the whys. So farm, we really enjoyed pages discussing melanin and skin. Firstly, it was a really good way to discuss why some people have different shades of skin. Children are wont to just spout off what they see, without care to feelings or other social implications. My son's best little friend in the neighborhood is African-American and when we discussed this section, he immediately mentioned her and said "Jane has more melanin than I do!". I am glad that he seems to understand that everyone is different from one another in this scientific/reason manner, but without judgement. . I love that this book helps me explain things in a way of scientific causes of his observations. I love it and I will be buying others in the series.
I bought this book for my 7 year old son in an effort to encourage reading and present new and exciting facts for him. There are lots of pictures and interesting facts, but I think this may have been better for him when he was a little bit younger. Kids are always asking "why" and many times we adults just don't have the answer, so this would be perfect for quenching those inquisitions. I would suggest this for kids between 3-5.
This was a great book to give my curious 4 year old. We read a few stories out of it every night. Our favorite so far is "why do your toes wrinkle in the bathtub." Lots of great information but at a level where my daughter can understand it. I will definitely look into buying the other books in this series.
From the very first time I opened the book, each time I turned a page it resulted in that page simply falling out of the book. Please see the pictures. Perhaps I got a defective book, but watch out.
My 6 year old is so curious about everything. Asking why this why that all the time is great, but sometimes I need a break! Well guess what? This book is awesome! It’s very easy to read, has a great table of contents to easily find the answer to a question, and very colorful. I will be buying more in this series. So many encyclopedia type books are boring, but this one is very pleasing to flip through, read, and understand.

When Amazon had a special on books I was looking for something to get for my daughter to eventually read. She's 3 months old right now so obviously this book is far too advanced but I've had a good time reading it. I was a really curious kid, always wanting to know why. This book answers a lot of questions I had as a kid, and tons more. I'm hoping she turns out to be curious like me. They also make a book of why 2, which I ordered right after receiving this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story. Anna is such a delightful character, she is so very smart and caring. I enjoyed her emensley. Beaumont is such a flert in a good way, it rounded out his character.
When the Earl of Scarcliffe invited his friends and brother to spend the summer, they agreed that it would be a carefree time; they would shut out the world and its troubles and just enjoy themselves. This, of course, means absolutely no women. As this is a romance series, it's painfully obvious how well that works out for them... Robert's story was the first book in the series. Although it wouldn't hurt, it's not necessary to read the first book first. This one partially runs alongside the first, but it doesn't give away all the particulars of it. This book also contains hints about the next books in the series, and I found that intriguing and am eager to read them. The Duke of Beaumont is one of the men who comes to Scarcliffe Hall. After an impromptu kiss with a lady whom he later finds out is the doctor's daughter, Anna Hawkins, he decides that a little more wouldn't hurt. He's told no for one of the first times in his life. Anna's engaged. Her fiance has promised to help the town, which badly needs an influx of cash, and she figures it's a decent enough bargain. But when she realizes that she feels more for a stranger that she doesn't even particularly like, after just one kiss, she begins to question her decision. Not that she could ever abandon the town, or be a Duchess, or would ever consent to be anything less than that to the Duke. I find it hard to admire a man who would ask a woman to be his mistress, but, to give Beaumont full-credit, once Anna turns him down, he never asks again. He might attempt to push more of an acquaintance, but he never attempts to force or push for anything more. He's not bad or cruel, just self-centered. And, like Anna, I could see potential in him. There are some things he's never found cause to think about, but as Anna slowly opens his eyes, he begins to see and does grow into a better person. And to admit your faults and learn and grow as a person IS admirable. This is a clean read, and decently edited. I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so and the opinions stated are my own.

She is already betrothed but that kiss lit something in her but she has no intentions of becoming his mistress. Beaumont then decides he has to have her and so he will make her is Duchess if she will have him. Love this story where Beaumont starts out a spoiled and used to getting his way and then he changes into a man in love who will everything he can to have Anna.Received from the author and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Great book! I've lost 75 pounds in less than a year on this way of eating! I just got rid of the oil when my weight loss slowed down! My type 2 diabetes is under control with 10u of Lantus insulin, BP is now 117/76 from 132/86, my eyesight has improved dramatically and had to get new glasses. My inflammatory arthritis has improved to where I no longer need Hydrocodone for the pain, just 1 aspirin twice a day. My chronic headaches have disappeared and I'm off all medications and vitamins which saves me hundreds of dollars each month!I have followed a Whole foods, plant based, no oil diet and have NEVER been hungry or left the table unsatisfied. I have followed the outlines of Dr. McDougall's way of eating and will never again follow the Standard American Diet that promoted the illnesses in me. Thank you, Dr. McDougall for leading me in the right direction after so many years of yo-yo dieting! I am well on my way to health, by following your simple guidelines!
Really love this book! I wish I would have read it sooner! The starch solution its a great book to learn how to have a healthy diet and debunks the theory that all carbohydrates make you fat.If you are a vegan you should read thisIf you are not a vegan but want to learn or need to learn how to eat healthy this is the book.McDougall also has other books but the starch solution is updated and it will teach you everything you need to learn about nutrition.Forget about counting calories, starving or doing crazy diets.. this is THE book.I recommend this book to anyone who really has an open mind and wants to learn.By the way... its easy to read too!THIS BOOK IS NOT ABOUT SOY... This book is chock full of great information. I have lost 32 lbs in 10 weeks, lowered my blood pressure, reversed my diabetes, stabilized my kidney function and fatty liver.I highly recommend everything from Dr. McDougall.
I had been a vegetarian for a year but my diet primarily consisted of boca burgers and a bunch of other processed foods that were absolutely not healthy. I had previously tried Atkins before but after learning about the treatment of animals I switched to being a vegetarian and I was lost because I was still in the low carb mindset and struggled to find anything satisfying besides the Boca Burgers I would eat.After this past year I had gotten up to my highest weight ever, nearly 200 pounds. At 5'8" I wasn't horribly huge but I had the beginnings of a gut, was rounder in every part of my body including my face, and I just didn't feel good. Then, like nearly every McDougall story, I stumbled across a video of Dr. McDougall after searching around on YouTube for vegan success stories. High Carb Hannah initially led me in the direction, and after I watched every video I could find of McDougall I was absolutely in.The first several weeks were challenging because I wasn't losing much weight. I had only watched the videos online and didn't realize that I needed a wider knowledge base to lean on in order to lose the weight successfully. That's when I finally decided to buy the Starch Solution and I haven't looked back since.It's been 9 weeks on the Starch Solution and I've lost 18 pounds. I know people drop a lot more weight in that amount of time typically, but I haven't been 100% following the program at every moment in time but every time I stray away with a meal when I'm out or something I make sure to get right back on course the very next meal. I've been lifting weights (a program called "Stronglifts" that is focused on building strength by starting low to gain good form then to build up progressively each workout - Google it if you're interested I would highly, highly recommend it) in addition to working a job that requires me to be outdoors and moving.I couldn't be happier on the Starch Solution diet. My main staples for my morning is overnight oats with a banana, almond milk, and cinnamon. Occasionally I'll add in dates when I feel I need the extra boost. For a while I was eating quinoa, black beans, and sweet potatoes for lunch and dinner with cucumbers and hummus as snacks throughout the day, but I've been switching things up recently.Regardless of what I've been eating, it's comforting to know that I can eat until I'm full, and that the foods I'm eating are satisfying. What's all really important to note is that I could be doing even better with this diet if I: A - Ramped up the diet to maximum weight loss with 45% caloric intake as starches and 45% as vegetables (I believe that is the ratio stated in the book) or B - Cut out the minimal added oils in my diet found in the hummus I eat (Classic Sabra hummus) or the little bit of olive oil I used when meal prepping a big thing of diced potatoes.I have a goal weight of 160 pounds that I hope to hit by 1/11/18, which will have been 8 months since I started my most recent weight loss journey. I'm confident that I will continue to see results, and am pleased that I know I can take it up another notch if I hit a plateau. The point of my review isn't to bore anybody with my life story and where I'm at right now: I decided to dedicate so much time to it because I read through countless reviews and stories and testimonials searching for an answer and over time they built up the confidence necessary to take the plunge and regain my health.If you're at all curious about this program, buy the book. Do what works for you in it. Go on a walk or join a gym, dedicate yourself to meal prepping and making your meals for the week (this is anecdotal but I've observed the food you eat is 80-90% of your weight loss - the exercise is minuscule compared to it - if you don't have the time to exercise, or only time to meal prep or exercise, do the meal prep. Your body will respond better and eventually circumstances could change and you could work exercise in. I highly, highly suggest that). Read the book once all the way through, then reread the 3rd section of how to do it. Stick with the staples of rice, oats, potatoes, quinoa, etc. Try to stay away from processed foods, and keep your meal prep recipes simple. They provide a lot of great recipes, but unless you loooove cooking, id recommend making basic foods (for dinner tonight I had corn tortillas, corn, black beans, and rice with a little bit of hot sauce drizzled on them - took my maybe 10 minutes to make (used microwaveable frozen rice) and it was a satisfying meal).I wish you the best on your journey, and hope that you can become a fellow Starchivore Warrior as we all work to regain our health and help save the animals and the planet while we do it!
Over 1 year ago, I started a regular exercise routine because I was tired of being overweight. After months and months, I lost weight, but still couldn't lose the weight I wanted and STILL felt drained and lethargic throughout the day. I tried modifying my diet and that didn't work. I've tried the Atkins Diet and that was an absolute mess. I felt horrible every day and could barely sleep. One day, my brother linked me to a Ted Talk with Dr McDougall and I heard about the McDougall diet and since I had tried everything, I figured I might as well buy this book and give it a try. After 1-2 weeks, my health drastically improve and I started losing weight like I've never lost before. I now look and feel better than I've ever felt in my life. This diet is hard to adjust to at first, but once you begin, you will have a VERY hard time going back. Whoever knew that rice, potatoes, and beans, the absolute most affordable grocery items were the key to good health? I shake my head at the big corporations trying to lie their way into more profits at the expense of our health.
