Review

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1999""Americans feel ashamed about so-called consumption debt, writes Mr. Calder in prose that's as clear as a bell, because they're psychologically frozen in a 100-year-old mindset. . . . Mr. Calder's argument is so deliciously seditious that you have to wonder: What's wrong with this picture? . . . Mr. Calder's sections on pawnbrokers, door-to-door peddlers and small lenders are worth the price of admission alone."---Cynthia Crossen, The Wall Street Journal"Contrary to those who piously and ahistorically rail against consumer debt as a modern fall from grace, Calder takes a much more nuanced and interesting view. [He] is to be commended for showing us the other side." (Reason)"In a surprisingly lively book about a potentially dreary subject, Calder argues that debt is as American as apple pie and that consumer borrowing has been an important engine of economic growth."---Charles Stein, The Boston Globe"A broadly researched book on the history of US consumer credit that breaks new ground and revises prevailing views. . . . This finely written volume is a major contribution." (Choice)"Those who complain that the debt represents an abandonment of thrift and a growing lack of willingness to defer gratification are wrong, claims Calder. . . . [He] makes the case that today's 'culture of consumption' arose as much from the availability of credit as from the efforts of advertisers and marketers." (Booklist)"Calder is at his best . . . drawing extensively on anecdotal and literary evidence to create a lively narrative." (Publishers Weekly (starred review))"There was never a golden age when everybody paid cash. . . . Moreover, Calder's research convinced him that, far from creating a nation of hedonistic wastrels, consumer credit's rigorous system of monthly payments imposes a puritanical discipline of hard work and thrift." (The New Yorker)"A colorful narrative style and clear, strong arguments will help readers understand this aspect of American social and economic life." (Library Journal)"Calder's work greatly increases our understanding of the rise of consumer culture in America."---Jonathan Silva, The Historian

"At last--an accessible and scholarly history of the American consumer's best friend and worst enemy."--James Grant, author of Money of the Mind and editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer"Lendol Calder is the first scholar in the field of modern U.S. social history to describe and analyze the century-long (1820s through 1920s) evolution of the incidence of debt, the availability of credit, and the prevailing attitudes toward both, as keystones to understanding twentieth-century changes in U.S. consumer cultureÖ. The quality of writing in the book is exceptional."--Otis A. Pease, University of Washington"Calder has produced a book that will not only add to what we know about 'consumer culture,' but will also force business historians to rethink the relative importance to the rise of consumerism of management innovations and advertising. Calder shows clearly that there is a third source of consumerism: installment credit."--William R. Childs, Ohio State University

wonderfully written and researched history of personal finance/consumer credit in the U.S. Author does not appear to have any particular political axe to grind. It is amazing to see the history recorded in this book being repeated today. Would highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to make sense of the progressive movement's regulationof consumer financial products.

Good!

Positive experience.

Calder brings up a lot interesting developments surrounding the growth of consumer credit, which can easily draw parallels to cirticisms of modern day institutions such as social networks (we're loosing "real" social contact! Not really, we're just changing how we make it). The price was hefty, however, and it's pretty borning to slug through.

Something there is that does not like a consumer loan. Indeed, for a long time the idea of such credit created a sensation of discomfort, insecurity and even shame. Americans harbored a natural hostility to such practices since they tend to ensnare the buyer into schemes that are onerous. Being in debt had the stigma of indicating a lack of self-restraint and character. This attitude toward debt long dominated. But, beginning in the early twentieth century, popular resistance to consumer credit gradually diminished. Lendol Calder's Financing the American Dream: A Cultural History of Consumer Credit is a fascinating chronicle of how this hostility was overcome. His analysis covering the late-nineteenth century to the Great Depression provides insight into a consumer culture that has led us to the present plight of an economy built upon and sustained by debt.It is a story that is not only about loans but about money, social attitudes and relationships. With the Industrial Revolution, the concept of money itself evolved. The world moved from a more personal relationship-based economy to today's impersonal money economy. Banking shifted from a conservative commercial institution catering to industry to a more consumer-oriented business dedicated to financing the American Dream. Government's role increased as it became involved in expanding and guaranteeing money supply and offering its own credit schemes. While the scenario was complex, there was one simple catalyst that brought about this transformation. This was the development of the installment method of financing. Calder claims that "The installment plan was to consumer credit what the moving assembly line was to the automobile industry. Without it, today's trillion dollar [now $13 trillion] consumer credit industry would be inconceivable."Starting with sewing machines, farm machinery and automobiles, the practice soon embraced almost every line of purchase including clothing. It created the tension of providing instant gratification while imposing severe discipline upon the worker now saddled with regular monthly payments. In this way, consumer debt became a permanent fixture if not an entitlement in American society. If installment buying was the instrument, credit marketing was the process which changed the mentality of thrifty Americans and secured the acceptance of consumer credit. Much more important than engineering a financial infrastructure, it became necessary to "sanitize" the concept of debt itself as a positive value for progress and society.Amply documented in Calder's narrative, credit marketers soon found ways of reassuring the public that consumer debt was positive. The small-loan lenders were no longer "loan sharks" but found new identities as "financial advisors," "financial doctors," or "consumer counselors." Even the installment plan itself underwent a facelift as they came to be called "budget plans," "club plans," `thrift accounts," or "preferred buyer plans." These and other subterfuges gradually turned the tide that paved the way for the credit wave of the future that continues to the present.Lendol Calder's clear and compelling arguments do much to explain how consumer credit became part of American culture. By extrapolating upon his findings, readers can also gain insight as to the present crisis and the future. The present explosive expansion of credit merely intensifies the earlier processes of gratification and obligation. Calder says it can be best "summed up in a single word: more."Today's credit-card economy runs on "more." There are more consumer goods, more credit devices, more profits, easier and longer terms--and more undisciplined consumers. On the surface, the quest for more happiness in consumer paradise seems to be intact although maxed out and overextended. But under the surface, this is anxiety. From the frenetic intemperance by which consumer credit has expanded, there comes a different kind of "more." There is more instability, more stress, more future debt burden--and perhaps more unhappiness. Such sobering perspectives invite reflection on the future of the American dream bought on an installment plan.John Horvat IIAuthor of Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to an Organic Christian Society--Where We’ve Been, How We Got Here, and Where We Need to Go

Calder book is an appealing read. I must agree with other reviews that this is usually not a very interesting subject, finance and credit, but Calder presents it in an interesting matter that can be quite witty at times. The reader will see how Victorian money management ideas of the past were largely accepted passively by most but only actually followed by few. Credit has existed since before this countries foundation argues Calder and he details the progression of credit systems to present times.

I used Calder's book in one of my History courses and found it to be thorough, even-handed and timely. Calder's prose style is remarkably engaging; students had no trouble navigating the text and discerning the major points. It's a gripping read, but also tremendously informative as well. If you have time to read only one book on the development of consumerism and consumer values, this is it. In fact, I have read few books that I consider a better "window" on the shaping of modern American culture.

Calder covers what can be a dry subject in an interesting manner. He follows the history of consumer credit from the early 19th century up to the period of the New Deal. The book discusses the evolving attitudes toward credit and debt and the products that eventually revolutionized the system of consumer credit. It is well documented and illustrated. A surprisingly good read for what can be a boring subject.

Review

"This is an important book because it examines an important but complex topic and because it examines that topic in a manner accessible to any reader wishing to have a better understanding of what it is to be a human being. Steven Jensen is unafraid to tackle difficult topics, and his guidance through them is superb. As he recognizes, if we don't know the kind of being we are, we will almost certainly go desperately wrong in numerous ways. The Human Person provides a firm foundation and a protection against many of these errors."―Gary Atkinson, author of Our Search with Socrates for Moral Truth"Steven Jensen has given us philosophy just as it ought to be: reflection grounded in a rich soil of everyday experience, which is expressed in ordinary language used with nuance and precision and which ascends by accurate reasoning to the noblest truths. The Human Person is a trustworthy trail guide for the path to self-knowledge."―Christopher Blum, The Augustine Institute"Jensen's introduction to Thomistic psychology comes at a time when we must be reminded not only of who we are but of what we are. The Human Person does that with admirable clarity and erudition, not only by drawing on St. Thomas's profound teaching on human nature, but also by bringing it into fruitful dialogue with contemporary thought. It is a book that should find its way into the classroom and the library of everyone who cares to recover the truth about the human person in an age that has lost its moral bearings."―Giuseppe Butera, Providence College"Presents Aquinas's account of the human person in an approachable, comprehensive, sound mannerthe scholarship is excellent, well grounded in Aquinas and well informed about the central contemporary disputes and how Aquinas's account would bear on these disputes helpfully."―Tom Cavanaugh, author of Hippocrates' Oath and Asclepius' Snake

There was a meeting in 1963 between Robert F. Kennedy and James Baldwin and a few of Baldwin’s friends. When you think of an example of speaking truth to power, that meeting as described by Dyson here, will indeed standout as definitive.Dyson writes “I heard over the years how explosive it was, how it brought together other folk I had admired, including Harry Belafonte. The gathering pitted an earnest if defensive white liberal against a raging phalanx of thinkers, activists, and entertainers who were out for blood. I’ve always wanted to read a book about that historic moment, and more important, about its meaning for us today as we struggle with many of the same issues America confronted 50 years ago.”Dyson has not written that book, but this one has enough details about that meeting to give a clear picture about what took place. He manages to put the reader in that room while brilliantly filling out the book with looks at the various communities represented. There are chapters on the Artists, Activists, Intellectuals and the Politicians. And Dyson doesn’t just lock into 1963, he brings the discussion current because....”racial and political truths that we still confront today.”So while that very important and volatile meeting sets the foundation for the book, the actions or inactions of our current community leaders-not in the geographical sense, but community in the sense of interest groups, i.e. Artists, Politicians, etc.-are the brick and mortar that makes this a must read. The melding of the historical with current day concerns and challenges qualifies this work as one of Dyson’s best.Dyson’s prose and criticism is as always, electric and sharp, “the enshrinement of ignorance as the basis of power and authority, is the personification of white supremacy and white arrogance.” The indictment of white supremacy while encouraging Whites to wake up and recognize is a continued effort from his most previous work, Tears We Cannot Stop. As evidenced by the subtitle here, Dyson is of the belief that the historic meeting in 1963 was an important conversation about race that no doubt needs be to continued and expanded because it remains unfinished. However in this book he has turned up the volume so it’s clear what truth sounds like! Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced DRC. The publishing date is June 5, 2018. Mark your calendar.

I read Michael Eric Dyson to be challenged and to get a different view of life in America, and this book does that. At times it is a challenge toread his brutally honest opinions of life in the USA this long after the end of the Civil War, reconstruction, and the Civil Rights movement, butif we ever hope to heal the deep wounds of slavery we have to face the hard truths, and Mr. Dyson certainly is not afraid of hard truth.

I cannot honestly claim that I have found all the works of Dr, Dyson exceptional. I have sometimes found myself disagreeing with something written or questioning something written or squinting one eye tightly and saying to myself, " I don't really think so". However, in "What Sounds Like Truth" (see book underlining), I find Dr. Dyson to be the voice of a rhythmic brilliance composed of preacher, intellectual, and brother across the kitchen table who valiantly attempts to slay those dark, white phantoms of hatred, of fear, of ignorance while giving voice those of us with suffering from the ambiguity of lexical failure. When Dyson, rather early in the book writes, ". . .all that made sense no longer held in place, and it appeared that the cosmos had gotten drunk. . .teetered off course and hurdled madly into oblivion", it echoes precisely how I felt hearing the news of Dr. King's assassination. That feeling was mine, and once again my eyes became misty. What Dr. Dyson says, once again, is hear me, see me. And one man, Robert Kennedy, among many, finally did which enabled him to speak truth, and thus, prevented one city engaging in the fury that erupted across the country upon hearing of King's assassination. What Kennedy did was, "Listen and listen and listen".

Michael Eric Dyson amplifies the need to address the systemic racism with in the United States. He allows the reader to be in the room where the conversation with some of the leading black activists and RFK took place. He addresses the leftovers of racial bigotry that starve this nation of its notion of being "one nation under God." It is a must read for those who fight for justice, but more importantly, it is a handbook for those who just do not understand the perpetual angst of black fook.

The author is an absolutely wonderful speaker. I bought the book seeking more of his piercing insight into the difference between reality in America and the national narrative. But this book just wanders all over the place. It begins with a discussion of the relationship between James Baldwin and Robert Kennedy, and a famous meeting he held with some black leaders. That was interesting and revealing. From there he just jumps around discussing various pop culture people and some of the things they have said or done in the way of black activism. It's relatively interesting, like a literary, socially-aware Entertainment Tonight. But if I would have known how scattered and disorganized the book is I would not have bought it. I don't mind that I read it but have other things I would have rather read, like re-reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

Loved this book. It is so informative and enlightening. To say MED is prolific is a major understatement. I highly recommend this masterpiece. Buy and read this book.

Professor Dyson offer a powerful and much needed history of how moral leadership id developed through forthright, clear, and direct communication. The book details the critical engagement between key African American figures and Robert Kennedy in which those figures told Kennedy the truth in love about race relations that forced Rober Kennedy to have the coursage to confront his mental models concerning race relations. Kenedy's character was strong enough to face the reality with courage and then to take leadership in advancing civil rights in the years before he was murdered.Professor Dyson continues his significant contribution to our civic discurse and understanding in this book! Iy recommend with enthusiasm What Truth Sounds Like!

Amazon.com Review

Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire, the noted author's most enduring nonfiction work, is an account of Abbey's seasons as a ranger at Arches National Park outside Moab, Utah. Abbey reflects on the nature of the Colorado Plateau desert, on the condition of our remaining wilderness, and on the future of a civilization that cannot reconcile itself to living in the natural world. He also recounts adventures with scorpions and snakes, obstinate tourists and entrenched bureaucrats, and, most powerful of all, with his own mortality. Abbey's account of getting stranded in a rock pool down a side branch of the Grand Canyon is at once hilarious and terrifying.

The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book...set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty.

ah yes. edward abbey don't make like this any more. we're in the age of pc . can't decide if these are cowboy stories or classic lit.elements of both i guess. good slice of life stories. here's someone who lived his life just as he saw fit. he loved the s.w. u.s. passionately.here's some of his best observations of life in these united states circa 1970. we were still free.well worth the time and money to read. you'll learn something.look no caps ( i have decided that this uses fewer electrons and is thus better for the environment ) he he ho ho

OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".

I heard about this book at a party and just the way people talked about it fascinated me! These guys are true wanderers and adventurers, not big readers, and they LOVED this book. I heard that it was hard to get into because it is a memoir by a man who moved to almost completely undeveloped National Park in the desert and fell in love with it and wrote about it. The incredible thing is, he turned out to be a prolific writer who loved his subject and expresses his love in such moving, lyrical yet unsentimental and masculine fashion that you can't help but fall in love too.I am a huge annotator of books, and love to highlight and mark comments next to passages in all my books that I want to return to. The whole book is like that for me. Every sentence shows the rare, sublime mystery of shadows, lights, passing moments of a living and breathing planet that accepts and watches all who travel through, inviting them to delve into the secrets and profound truths that only the wilderness can teach us. Now more than ever, we need to remember why America is so unutterably fragile, beautiful and worth protecting.

Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness by Edward Abbey has a much deserved reputation of being one of the finest book written about the American West. Abbey spent time as a park ranger in Arches National Park in the late 60s, and in the process, traveled all around southern Utah and northern Arizona. This book is the outcome of that stay, yet it is so much more.Abbey uses this book as a platform not only to make observations about the geography, fauna and flora of Utah, but as a place to vent his spleen at the destruction of the natural world, and the dehumanizing nature of our society. The book is also filled with humor, pathos, and great sensitivity. His prose is elastic, conversational at some points, poetic and profound at others.Desert Solitaire is a master piece of non-fiction. Abbey moves from topic to topic with ease. Each piece stands alone, but they are interconnected. In a relatively short amount of space, he writes strongly and convincingly about a host of topics. For this skill, we can forgive him his obvious misanthropy. He hates everyone.

Not much to add that has not already been written by other reviewers. An excellent book. A real classic. The book gives greater meaning to recent arguments regarding "roadless" national parks. It may be this is when/where the argument first started. Abbey's views may be a bit extreme, but his points of contention have likely lead to healthy compromises and positive outcomes. Those who were raised in the city that read this book may be enlightened, others may never get it. In the book, Abbey uses the term, anthropocentric. I had to look it up. I've concluded Abbey's book begs the question, "Are humans, due to their superior intelligence, entitled to forcibly control nature and alter natural processes, or should humans, like all other species, adapt and defer to the power and wonder of nature?"

I liked this book because it was like an adventure from my chair. Through this book I visited places I'll never visit in real life. It's essentially a book of essays, but told in a way that it kind of weaves a whole story. His descriptions are interesting and it's a fun ride. But I never looked forward to it and had to force myself to finish. The author himself kept getting in the way of his own stories. I'm not even talking about his political rants (which I expected and were interesting to consider, even if I didn't always agree). I felt like I was listening to a teenager trying to impress me with how he's so rough and rugged, that he can hike 40 miles in 2 days fueled only by a can of beans and a blade of grass and half a bottle of water. I strained my eyes from rolling them too many times.

This book was a masterpiece and a definite need to have in your African Studies Library. The author travels through exhaustive and thorough lengths to explain each chapter and subject matter, until the reader has no choice except to have a full grasp of the historical facts and data; political, economical and social environment and otherwise, taking place at each moment in space and time. This work is a prestigious scholastic fountain of information which can be enjoyed by everyone from the African Studies student, journeyman and master teacher. The author does not hide or gloss over the facts, however is unbiased in his approach and perspective to enable the reader to obtain the vastness, but richness of the material. At the end of each chapter the author also provides a listing of additional materials and books for research in order to further ones knowledge base on the specific subject.

I bought a whole heap of books for myself in preparation for teaching a unit on Africa. This was one of the three great finds. It is so well written that it's actually fun to read. I LOVE how the authors integrate where our information about the past in Africa comes from, and name contraversies and debates within African Studies. They name the stereotypes about Africa and do a great job of clarifying and complicating them. I have learned so, so much from this book. I even used parts with my students.(The other great finds were Africa's Discovery of Europe for me and Through African Eyes for my students.)

It didn’t really good to me go I wanted to due to my class starting and everything. But I am very glade it made it to me with no damage to the book at all. It’s also was a great price..

A required textbook for one of my college classes. This book is written really well, and I actually learned and retained the information. I think every student should have to read this textbook in order to have a better understanding of Africa's history. It was a very interesting and important book.

very very happy! a worthy addition to my library

This book did a good job depicting the history of Africa and relating it to how Africa as a whole is today.

It is nice in the sense that it gives introductory material to a person who doesn't know any african history. However it is written to the level of a freshman high school student (I bought this book for a junior college level class). This book does not give enough detail on some subjects and it gives too much detail on other subjects (such as the chapter on the development of African Languages). But it would be nice for any person to read if they want a basic introduction of African history and culture.

50 Things To See With A Telescope - Kids: A Constellation Focused Approach

Review

"50 Things to See with a Telescope - Kids is an excellent first book or addition to any kid amateur astronomer's bookshelf - even for those of us who are still just kids at heart." -Kevin Mogk, Science Communicator, Manitoba Museum Planetarium."This book is a must have BEFORE buying that first telescope for a young new astronomer (or even an older beginner)! Or, at the least, given to a beginner with a new telescope. As an advanced amateur astronomer, I have been on the lookout for a book I could wholeheartedly recommend to beginners, and I haven't seen a book better than The Stars, A New Way to See Them by H. A. Ray, until now." - Eric Newell, Carolina Skygazers.

#2,895 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I really like this book; I would actually suggest getting this one instead of the "small telescope" volume by the same author, even if you don't have kids. It takes a great approach of showing a naked-eye constellation or asterism which will promote familiarity with the night sky, but then also shows where to find a cool telescope object within that same area of sky. I like the obvious division into seasons (missing from "small telescope"). There's some overlap with the "small telescope" but not too much and I think the choices made in this book are much better, plus it's really got many more than 50 objects (for example â„– 26, "The Teapot" also includes M17 and M7).To make it appeal to kids, this book has been printed in full color, which is much more appealing than his previous books but much less friendly for low-light or red-light use. I use this book inside, and then mark the relevant pages in "Turn Left at Orion" to take out to the backyard. This small book doesn't have enough detail to be able to find distant clusters or galaxies anyway; I'll still need an atlas or other guide. Also, as the author pointed out in previous books, full-color astrophotography doesn't really represent what you (or your child) will see through the eyepiece. Fortunately, Mr. Read largely included photographs which are more representative; I especially compliment him for including the photographs showing what nearby planets (Saturn, Jupiter) will look like through a small telescope. They're good pictures, obviously taken in dark skies, but illustrate well the small angular size you can expect to see.In short I think this is a much-improved replacement for "50 Things to See with a Small Telescope" and should be considered by any new stargazer, child or not.

Got this book to go with a telescope we got for our daughter for her 4th birthday. She's absolutely nuts for space, and she was so excited when she got this book. It's helpful for us parents, too, to see what's visible at different points in the year, and it'll be a book that my daughter will love to read for years, I'm sure.

Great book for anyone new to astronomy and using a telescope. Definitely recommend for a parent and child learning together. Excellent illustrations, pictures make it easy to find objects in the sky. Easy to read book packed with lots of interesting and useful information. We bought this along with the Celestron First Telescope and this book by far exceeded (my husband’s) expectations. He thought it would be a waste of money but was so glad we bought it. My 4 year old son loves flipping through it on his own as well.

UPDATE: I requested and quickly received a replacement copy which is perfect! The difference in the print quality is remarkable. I'm very pleased! The printing of this book is not great. Color registration of all the text and images is slightly offset which makes everything hard to read; it’s bad enough that I hope to exchange it for a better copy.Aside from the printing issues, the content is good. This will be a really useful and interesting book for our family. Even though it’s directed at kids, my husband and I will learn a lot, too! Will be great as we use the telescope Santa gave our daughter for Christmas.

Hi! I bought this for my (soon to be) seven year old nephew's birthday! I know he is going to absolutely love this book and the telescope I also bought for him! So many cool things in here! Thank you for your quick service and a great product!

Wow! This is by far the best constellation/telescope book for kids (and their parents too). The illustrations are beautiful, the text is informative and easy to follow. We also like the getting starting guide to buying and using telescopes. Highly recommend.

The telescope came well packaged and complete. I have not put it together completely because it is a birthday present for my 10 yr old grandson. The action on the focus knob is smooth and well put together. He’s not going to discover any new planets with this telescope, but I think he will learn a lot. It’s a great telescope for the price.

We bought this for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves this book! We like it to. We even had the honor of meeting the author recently!!! Very nice guy! Great book! Highly recommend!!!
